PCC investigates Melanie Phillips’ Spectator blog
If you cannot call a person who stabs a sleeping family to death in cold blood, and then all the people who are like him who celebrate these murders by a public celebration and the handing out of candy ‘Savages’ then what exactly does the word mean?

A Melanie Phillips blogpost on the Spectator website which referred to the “moral depravity” of Arab “savages” is being investigated by the Press Complaints Commission.
The online comment piece, headlined “Armchair barbarism”, focused on media coverage of the murder of five members of a Jewish family in the West Bank settlement of Itamar by Palestinian militants earlier this month.
“The moral depravity of the Arabs is finding a grotesque echo in the moral bankruptcy and worse of the British and American ‘liberal’ media,” wrote Phillips.
“Overwhelmingly, the media have either ignored or downplayed the atrocity – or worse, effectively blamed the victims for bringing it on themselves, describing them as ‘hard-line settlers’ or extremists.
“To the New York Times, it’s not the Arab massacre of a Jewish family which has jeopardised ‘peace prospects’ – because the Israelis will quite rightly never trust any agreement with such savages – but instead Israeli policy on building more homes, on land to which it is legally and morally entitled, which is responsible instead for making peace elusive. Twisted, and sick.”
The column, which also referred to coverage of the murders by CNN, the BBC and the Guardian – part of the group that publishes MediaGuardian.co.uk – prompted two complaints to the press watchdog, one of them from Engage, a group promoting Muslim engagement in British society.
Inayat Bunglawala, chair of Muslims4UK, said: “Her words went far beyond just denouncing the killings. It was a far more generalised racist outburst against Arabs as a whole.
“If you insert the word ‘Jew’ or ‘Jewish’ where she has referred to Arabs then I am sure she would have no doubt that those words would be antisemitic. Just as she abhors antisemitism it is important that she maintains the same vigorous anti-racist stance against Arabs. It is just unacceptable to use that kind of language.”
Bunglawala said he had also complained to the police about the column.
In November last year the Spectator and Phillips published an online apology to a prominent British Muslim they falsely accused of antisemitism in an online column.
The Spectator had not responded to a request for comment at the time of publication.

Hamas rocket explodes near Tel Aviv.
Note: The original link has a photo which is quite spectacular but I doubt it is actually of this event. Here is a link to the Jerusalem post, the first media to report on this, which should be the most reliable report.
From Your Jewish News:
Rockets were launched towards Rishon Lezion, 10 miles south of Tel Aviv, and Ashdod on Thursday afternoon, and sirens were heard in Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gedera and Gan Yavne. Another rocket landed in the Eshkol Regional Council, the eight rocket attack since Thursday morning.
IDF tanks shot into Gaza on Thursday, injuring one man, according to Palestinian sources, following five rockets launched from Gaza into Israel.
The strike came after the IAF struck four targets in Gaza Strip in the early morning, after Palestinians fired about a dozen rockets and mortars across the border, striking deep into Israel.
The tanks were aimed at a Hamas facility in Gaza City, which reportedly burst into flames.
Earlier Thursday, the IAF bombed terrorists that were attempting to shoot rockets into Israel.
Deputy Prime Minister Moshe Ya’alon said on Thursday that Israel “will not be tolerant of any escalation.”
Speaking in the US, Ya’alon said that Israel will not tolerate “terrorist attacks or shooting rockets at our citizens.”
He said that the war against terror “requires a long battle, but it will not stop us from taking care of whoever shoots at Israel, as they have in the last few days or sends terrorists to the center of cities.” Continue Reading →

Israel braces for flare-up as Gazan rockets hit
Yahoo News:
JERUSALEM (Reuters) – Palestinian rockets struck two cities deep in Israel on Wednesday, wounding a resident and prompting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to threaten lengthy “exchanges of blows” with the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.
Islamic Jihad, a smaller Gaza faction and occasional Hamas ally, claimed responsibility for the attacks on Beersheba and Ashdod.
They followed Israeli air strikes and shelling in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday that killed four Palestinian civilians, including three children playing football, and five militants, medical officials said.
Netanyahu, who voiced regret for Tuesday’s civilian deaths and said Israel sought no escalation, took a tougher tone after some members of his cabinet mooted a wider offensive on Gaza.
Israel’s three-week war in the impoverished coastal enclave in 2009 killed about 1,400 Palestinians, drawing heavy international censure. Hamas had mostly held fire since.
“No country would be prepared to absorb protracted missile fire on its cities and civilians, and of course the State of Israel is not prepared to,” Netanyahu said in parliament.
“It could be that this matter will entail exchanges of blows, and it may take a certain period of time, but we are very determined to strike at the terrorist elements and deny them the means of attacking our citizens,” he said, according to a transcript issued by his office. Continue Reading →
INTERVIEW WITH IDF PARAMEDIC WHO RESPONDED TO THE ITAMAR MASSACRE
Folks, this interview reveals a truly sad, heartbreaking story of unspeakable inhumanity, but it also has another side, one of humanity, and of kindness and professionalism of an Israeli IDF paramedic who places his core value system at the very heart of what he does for a living. Sargent Edi Itelman also represents the professionalism and humanitarianism that is embedded within the DNA of the Israeli Defense Forces itself, something that the sergeant takes great pride in being a part of.
It was very difficult to listen to the sergeant’s step by step accounting of what he saw and experienced that night in the Itamar settlement, inside the Fogel household. The sight of the butchery is still fresh in many people’s minds, and of course, especially for those people who had to attend the scene personally.
The Tundra Tabloids is greatly appreciative to Sergeant Itelman for his service and taking the time to tell his story. KGS
A Tundra Tabloids Transcript of the phone interview with Sergeant Edi (Edward) Itelman 22.03.11
Paramedic Sergeant, Edi Itelman, first responder to the house of the Fogel family in the Itamar settlement located in Judea, in the disputed territories. This is his personal account of what he saw and experienced that late Friday-early Saturday morning in the Itamar settlement.
I am a paramedic for the army, I serve in a special unit called the Military Mobile Intensive Care Unit. My ambulance is located approximately ten minutes from Itamar. From Friday night to Saturday approximately 1am (01:00) Israeli time I get a call that said that there’s been a terrorist penetration in Itamar and that I should go there because there is some wounded in Itamar, that there was a terrorist attack happening at the moment.
So I and another medic, the driver, go with the ambulance to Itamar. When we reach the house, of course we weren’t sure if the terrorists were still in the house or not when we got to the scene. There may be a situation where the terrorist is still in the house waiting for us to come in, so he could hurt us as well.
Turkey’s Deputy Prime Minister calls for bombing of Israel
From American Thinker with thanks to Sheik Yermami
Turkey’s Deputy Prime Minister has called for the bombing Of Israel.
Michael Rubin reports at Commentary Contentions
After assuring both Libyans and Turks that Turkey was not involved in airstrikes on Libya, Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Ar?nç, of Turkey, said, “We wish that the United Nations had made such resolutions and countries had taken action in the face of incidents in Gaza, Palestine and the other regions
This is exactly the problem I thought might arise from President Obama’s endorsement of the trendy principle of “Responsibility to Protect”. In yesterday’s blog, “The Rise of Samantha Power and the risks for the American-Israel relationship,” I speculated that the rationale Obama adopted to bomb Libya bore the risks of others adopting the same “principle” to justify punishing, if not bombing, Israel.
I wrote:
It is not hard to envision that this R2P concept, swirling through the United Nations and in international foreign policy circles, can one day be applied against Israel when that nation is forced to respond from attacks coming from the West Bank, Gaza, and Lebanon. Terrorists hide behind civilians; Israeli actions to defend themselves often happen in densely populated areas where civilian deaths are almost inevitable – despite all the precautions Israel takes to prevent them.
And noted Omri Ceren’s excellent analysis of the history of this amorphous concept of the Responsibility to Protect and how it has already been used to criticize Israel. It seems that adversaries of Israel are eager to apply this concept to attack Israel, metaphorically and diplomatically, if not militarily (yet).
