Egyptian Sheikh issues fatwa prohibiting votes for Christian, secular candidates

Egyptian Salafi Sheikh Mohammad Amer issued a fatwa prohibiting votes for Christian and secular candidates.

CARIO: Mohammad Amer, a Salafi Sheikh in Damanhur, Egypt, issued a fatwa prohibiting votes for any Christian, secular or liberal candidate, as well as any Muslim candidate who does not pray daily or call for the implementation of Shariah law.

The fatwa also prohibited voting for any former member of the dissolved National Democratic Party (NDP), associated with the regime of deposed President Hosni Mubarak, with the exception of a few “honorable” candidates.

Amer claimed that voting for any such candidate would constitute a grave sin.

“I want the voters to vote in favor of the candidates of the Islamic movements and to oppose those who want to separate religion from the state. There is nothing called liberalism in Islam and there is no absolute freedom in our religion,” he said to London’s Asharq al-Awsat newspaper, defending the move. Continue Reading →

Egypt: Salafists veil statue of sirens in Alexandria

Arabic translation: Image: Statue (mermaids) in Alexandria, before the veil .. After the veil imposed by the organizers of the party conference Salafi light..

(ANSAmed) – CAIRO, NOVEMBER 2 – The shapes of the mermaids that embellish the fountain of Zeus in the centre of Alexandria have been deemed “inappropriate” by the Salafist Al Nour (Light) party, which decided to “veil” them completely with a sheet during a meeting yesterday evening.

The incident, which was reported by the website of the Al Masri Al Youm newspaper, has unleashed a wave of comment and disbelief on Twitter, where the paper posted pictures “before and after the niqab” of the fountain of the sirens, upon which an enormous placard carries the words: “Egyptian women devote themselves to their husbands and their nation”.

Political leaders of the party, which is at the head of a coalition of Islamist parties that will stand in the forthcoming Egyptian elections from November 28, had recently announced that they were against the statues, deeming them contrary to Islamic tradition, the newspaper reports. “Covering a statue of sirens will certainly lead us to Paradise. I can’t wait,” was the ironic reaction of one Twitter user.

The electoral campaign for the first legislative elections of the post-Mubarak era officially began today and will end two days before the polls open. (ANSAmed).

Coptic Christian Student Murdered By Classmates for Wearing a Cross

AINA.ORG appears to be under DDOS attack at the moment. But I reproduced their whole article below.

Coptic Christian Student Murdered By Classmates for Wearing a Cross

(AINA) — In mid-October Egyptian media published news of an altercation between Muslim and Christian students over a classroom seat at a school in Mallawi, Minya province. The altercation lead to the murder of a Christian student. The media portrayed the incident as non-sectarian. However, Copts Without Borders, a Coptic news website, refuted this version and was first to report that the Christian student was murdered because he was wearing a crucifix.

“We wanted to believe the official version,” said activist Mark Ebeid, “because the Coptic version was a catastrophe, as it would take persecution of Christians also to schools.” He blamed the church in Mallawi for keeping quiet about the incident.

Today the parents of the 17-year-old Christian student Ayman Nabil Labib, broke their silence, confirming that their son was murdered on October 16, in “cold blood because he refused to take off his crucifix as ordered by his Muslim teacher.” Nabil Labib, the father, said in a taped video interview with Copts United NGO, that his son had a cross tattooed on his wrist as per Coptic tradition, as well as another cross which he wore under his clothes. Egyptian cleric calls for sharia in Egypt

Below, the description as given by the uploader.

Uploaded by on Oct 23, 2011

A translated excerpt from a very moving and impassioned speech by Sheikh Umar ibn Abdul Aziz in Egypt, calling for the shariah and moving Egypt and its people to establish the deen of Allah, and to give the revolution real meaning post Mubarak. He exhorts them to fear no one but Allah in doing so, even if America and Israel declare war on Egypt, for the “war against Israel and America” is “better than the war against Allah” by not implementing his deen as the way of life that it is. Given in October 2011.

This khutbah was given at Masjid Nur, Cairo, Egypt.

In a large press conference held Thursday afternoon, multiple civilian eyewitnesses recounted to reporters what they saw on the night of 9 October, when a peaceful march of thousands of Coptic and Muslims protesters, which was headed towards the TV headquarters at Maspero near Tahrir square to demand equal rights for Egypt’s 8 million Christians, turned into deadly clashes with the military police, leaving behind 24 protesters dead, 329 injured and a divided and confused public.

The headquarters of Tahrir daily newspaper in the Dokki district of Cairo, where the press conference was held, bustled since the morning hours with press members and activists trying to squeeze into the event to hear first-hand testimonies from survivors of “Bloody Sunday”.

In order to resolve the congestion, organizers set up two simultaneous press conferences in adjacent offices at the paper’s headquarters, with different eyewitnesses speaking in each.

The conference was organized byThe Revolution Youth Coalition, the Workers Democratic Party, The Popular Committees to defend the revolution, Revolutionary Socialists, the Popular Socialist Alliance Party, No to Military Trials Campaign, and the National Front for Freedom and Justice.

Activists called the event and prepared for it in less than 24 hours of an international press conference the ruling military council (SCAF) held on Wednesday to present the army’s side of what happened on 9 October in front of the TV building to a divided public opinion. Continue Reading →

Smuggled Libyan weapons flood into Egypt

WAPO

EL ARISH, Egypt — Large caches of weapons from Libya are making their way across the Egyptian border and flooding black markets in Egypt’s already unstable Sinai Peninsula, according to current and former Egyptian military officials and arms traders in the Sinai.

Surface-to-air missiles, most of them shoulder-launched, have been intercepted by Egyptian security officials on the road to Sinai and in the smuggling tunnels that connect Egypt to the Gaza Strip since Libyan autocrat Moammar Gaddafi fell from power in Tripoli in August, a military official in Cairo said. Arms traders said the weapons available on the clandestine market in Sinai also include rockets and antiaircraft guns.

The seizures raise fresh concerns about security along the sensitive area that borders the Gaza Strip and Israel, at a time when unrest is roiling the region. The addition of shoulder-fired antiaircraft missiles to arsenals of Palestinian fighters in Gaza could add significantly to the threat against Israel, whose helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft frequently patrol the zone, which is controlled by the militant Islamist group Hamas.

“We don’t want to see Egypt as a pathway to smuggle weapons,” said Sameh Seif el-Yazal, a retired Egyptian general in military intelligence who said several surface-to-air missiles have been intercepted on the desert road from Libya to the Egyptian city of Alexandria and on their way north toward Gaza. “We believe some Palestinian groups made a deal with Libyans to get special weapons such as shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles.” Continue Reading →
