AINA site down. Here is a part of an article that will be up when the site is.

AINA did a very important article on the facts on the ground as far as Egypt’s Christian community is concerned but it seems as if the website cannot load. So I will post some of the article here with the videos referred to, and a link to the whole article which will work once the site is back up.

Secret Video Shows Egyptian Police, Security Staging Attack on Copts

(AINA) — Millions of people world-wide have seen videos of Egyptian Army trucks chasing and crushing Christian protesters under their wheels during the events of the Maspero Massacre on October 9, which claimed the lives of 27 and injured 329 Christians (AINA 10-10-2011).

The ruling military council has denied that military forces used live ammunition against the Maspero protesters, or that personnel intentionally used armored vehicles to run over civilians. After blaming the Copts for using firearms, they later changed their story and put the blame on “unidentified” civilians who infiltrated the demonstrations, targeting both the peaceful protesters and the military police to cause a rift between the military council and the people. In all of its statements the military has cleared the army of any wrong-doings.

Evidence during the Maspero Massacre have now emerged which exposes the military police and state central security of committing other grave abuses against the Copts. “These are war crimes,” says Dr. Emad Gad, a scholar at Al-Ahram Centre for Strategic Studies, “and Field Marshal Tantawi is responsible for it. He who issued this order should be prosecuted.”

Video evidence [above] has emerged proving that the so-called “unidentified” civilian element, or “thugs” as they are sometimes called and who are increasingly implicated in crimes by the authorities to shift the blame away from themselves, worked together with the military police and central security during the Maspero massacre. Although the assailants in the footage were careful not to be caught on camera, Muslim activist Galal Mohannad was on his way to Maspero when he stumbled on the evidence and secretly taped it on his phone, risking his life in the process. He passed through this road with its inspection points because he is a Muslim. On YouTube he titled it “Bloody Sunday, thugs, police and army…one hand.”

Coptic activist Mark Ebeid said that “thugs are either security personnel in civilian clothes, or ex-prisoners on the security and police’s list of dangerous criminals and they hire them to kill or do any dirty work for them, or radical Muslims, who are only to eager to oblige the police and satisfy their desire to kill Christians.”

Renowned TV commentator Bilal Fadl of the independent Tahrir TV aired this footage of how the thugs were intercepting Copts in the streets and how on orders of the security they even went into the Hilton hotel and dragged Copts out. He also commented on how they were waiting for the Coptic demonstrators to arrive to attack them (video).[below]

Peter Hitchens: An analysis of Egypt today.

Yes, yet another analysis of Egypt and the direction it is taking. I think I have posted several already today in one form or another. This one though, is by Peter Hitchens and while the start is a bit of flowery prose, once it gets going, is really well worth the read.

It is over at The Daily Mail. It may not have much you don’t already know, but it is well assembled and thought out and is a good addition to the body of prediction already out there about Egypt, and the ‘Arab spring’

Here is one thing I did not know however, that Peter informs us:

What does the Egyptian elite think? Well, the man who scaled the building [The Israeli embassy] and ripped down the Israeli flag, Ahmad al-Shahat, is a national hero and has been given a flat, a job at  a quarry and a commemorative plaque by his local provincial governor, in recognition of his illegal act.

Israelis strip in support of Egypt blogger

This is a cool story. Maybe someday, maybe we can see Egyptians or frankly anyone in the Islamic world rallying to support an Israeli for greater freedom and expression. I won’t hold my breath though.

Dozens of Israeli women stripped off their clothes Saturday in a show of solidarity with the 20-year-old Egyptian blogger who caused a stir in the Arab world last week when she posted a naked photo of herself in protest against the limits on free expression in her country.

Touched by the spirited protest measure, some 40 Israelis posed for a nude group shot in support of the Egyptian activist, Egypt activist posts herself nude, sparks outrage

“Of course there’s the nationalistic aspect, and I won’t deny being a leftist and a seeker of peace,” she added. “I feel like the governments don’t represent the enlightened, simple people who want peace.”

Aljazeera footage and commentary on today’s protests at Tahir Sq.

Not that interesting really except for the nearly en-passant reference the reporter makes to the cries of Allahu Ackbar of the protesters, leading one to suspect that more and more, these events are projections of Ikhwan, the Islamic brotherhood as opposed to the initial call for greater liberalization and democratization.

There will be some new posts and information on Egypt and Christian safety there soon. Meanwhile…

Working on a few things now. Posting has been a bit light because some of the things I am working on is very time intensive. But meanwhile, have a look at these videos taken over the last couple of days in Egypt as well as Syria.

3rd video may not appear. link here

Keep an eye on http://www.aina.org/ for some heartbreaking footage and news about the direction Egypt is going. No, it won’t be a surprise to anyone, but its still disappointing.

Female Candidate for Egyptian Parliament: ‘Women are Deficient in Intelligence’ and it is ‘Not Permissible for Them to Be in Authority’

I guess this sort of proves her point. At least as far as she is concerned, as she clearly must be deficient.

a part of the article From

the Blaze:

In what seems a rather counterproductive statement for a woman seeking political office — a position of “authority” — to make, one female Egyptian parliamentary candidate made the damning affirmation that women are “deficient” in both “intelligence and religion” and thus it is “impermissible” for them to hold positions of authority.

One wonders how Muna Salah reconciles her own candidacy for higher office then. Well, according to Translating Jihad, Salah justifies her parliamentary bid by asserting the role would grant her “partial” rather than full authority. If elected, Salah seeks to implement Shariah law.

A female salafi candidate for Egyptian Parliament, Muna Salah, said to al-Sharq al-Awsat that women are deficient in intelligence and religion, and it is not permissible for them to be in authority or to occupy the office of the presidency. She defended her candidacy for the People’s Council, saying that acting as a representative in the Council is only partial authority and not complete authority, such as the presidency of the republic. She added that she seeks to apply the Islamic shari’a, including cutting off the hands of thieves, preventing the mingling of men and women, and specifying black clothes for women and white clothes for men.

Translating Jihad also points out that Salah‘s belief in a woman’s lack of intelligence and religion comes from somewhere — and that she is in fact quoting directly from Muhammad, as recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari:

Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri: Once Allah’s Apostle went out to the Musalla (to offer the prayer) o ‘Id-al-Adha or Al-Fitr prayer. Then he passed by the women and said, “O women! Give alms, as I have seen that the majority of the dwellers of Hell-fire were you (women).” They asked, “Why is it so, O Allah’s Apostle ?” He replied, “You curse frequently and are ungrateful to your husbands. I have not seen anyone more deficient in intelligence and religion than you.

Egyptian woman to get 80 lashes for blogging without clothes

That charge, “insulting Islam’, leaves a lot of room for interpretation. Really it means not being a good slave to your male owner I suspect.

Twenty-year-old Alia el-Mahdy and a male companion are accused of defaming Islam and contributing to indecency in Egypt.

A coalition of graduates of Islamic Law in Egypt have denounced a 20-year-old Egyptian Muslim woman Alia el-Mahdy and her companion, Karim Amer, for publishing nude photographs of themselves on their blog. The coalition contends that the pair have ‘violated morality,’ as well as inciting ‘indecency’ besides insulting Islam, according to the Bikya Masr website.  The complaint was filed by the coalition with the attorney general’s office of the north African country and claims that Mahdy’s goal is to “broadcast her obscene ideology with nude photographs.” Continue Reading →

Egyptian Christian marchers attacked

The Herald Sun:

Nov 18 2011 5:18 AM

ATTACKERS have thrown rocks and broken glass at a march by Coptic Christians in Cairo, injuring 10, in the latest outbreak of sectarian violence less than two weeks before elections.

About 400 Christians marched through the Cairo neighbourhood of Shubra overnight to mark the end of 40 days of mourning after sectarian clashes that killed 27 people, most of them Christians, witnesses said.

During the march, attackers threw stones, bricks and broken glass on the marchers from a six-floor apartment building, said marcher Hossam Victor. Clashes broke out and 10 people were injured, two of them seriously.

Mr Victor and other marchers blamed supporters of Gamal Saber, an ultraconservative Islamist candidate in Egypt’s elections, set to begin on November 28.

“They rained rocks and glass down on us from the building, and the police stood by and watched without doing anything,” he said. Continue Reading →

Cairo Islamists protest prophet cartoon at French embassy

From EXPATICA

Hundreds of hardline Islamists protested outside France’s embassy in Cairo on Friday against a French satirical newspaper that published pictures of the Muslim prophet, the state MENA news agency reported.

The news agency quoted Khaled Said, the spokesman of the Salafi group that organised the protest, as warning of “an escalation in peaceful measures against French interests,” including a boycott of French goods.

The Islamist said his group had submitted a protest to the embassy and organised the demonstration after the French government described the affair as a freedom of speech issue.

MENA did not report any violence in the protest, which was organised after the main weekly Muslim prayers.

The weekly newspaper Charlie Hebdo renamed itself Charia (sharia — Islamic law) Hebdo for a special Arab Spring edition and featured a front-page cartoon of the prophet Mohammed saying: “100 lashes if you don’t die of laughter!”

Its offices in Paris were destroyed in a suspected firebomb attack on November 2.

Jihadist groups urged Muslims in Egypt, Libya and Tunisia “to protest and demand that their current leaders threaten to sever ties with France” if the publishing licence for Charlie Hebdo is not revoked, and that similar acts against Islam be “criminalised,” the SITE Intelligence group reported.

Egypt Randomly Arresting Copts for Maspero Massacre

So. How’s the Arab Spring going?

From AINA

(AINA) — Egypt’s Military Prosecutor decided on November 3 to continue the detention of 34 Coptic Christians for another 15 days, pending investigations on charges of inciting violence, carrying arms and insulting the armed forces during the October 9 Maspero Massacre, which claimed the lives of 27 Christians and injured 329 (AINA 10-10-2011).

The court session was attended by more than twenty defense lawyers. The case was adjourned to November 18.

According to defense lawyers, most of the detainees were arrested after October 9, and some were not even at the Maspero protest and were just collected from the streets for “being a Christian.” Three of them were teens under 16 years old and another had an operation to extract a bullet from his jaw and was chained to his bed in hospital, according to defense lawyer Ibrahim Edward. “After the operation he was sent straight to prison where he cannot eat without feeding tubes, so he lives on juices.”

Prominent activist Alaa Abdel-Fatah, who criticized the army for the Maspero Massacre, was arrested on October 30, charged with inciting violence, seizing military equipment, and vandalizing military property. He refused to answer questions from the military prosecutors “in a case where the military is accused of committing a massacre when their APCs ran over peaceful protesters in front of Maspero on Oct. 9,” said his lawyer Ahmed Seif Al-Islam, former director of the Hisham Mubarak Law Center.
