Hundreds of Egyptians hit the streets on Friday, to demonstrate against President Mohammed Mursi and the Muslim Brotherhood. It was the first and most significant anti-Morsi rally since he was elected.

The biggest demonstration took place in Tahrir Square in the capital Cairo, where Morsi’s opponents, who are mostly from Egypt’s liberal stream, clashed with his supporters.

According to reports in Egypt, the sides began throwing stones and other objects at one another. It was also reported that security forces intervened and arrested some participants.

Demonstrations against Morsi were also held in several other cities in Egypt, but no violent incidents were recorded outside of Cairo. The protesters claimed that Morsi is trying to monopolize and centralize authority in Egypt and shouted, “Do not let one group to take over all of Egypt.”

Barry Rubin: What happened in Egypt

This is a really good concise analysis. The time to take a good hard critical look at Obama and the state of the world right now has come.

What Happened in Egypt

By Barry Rubin

A short history of democracy in Egypt. In February 2011 the Mubarak regime fell. There was going to be a parliament elected in Egypt. The parliament was elected. Its election was invalidated. Today there is no parliament in Egypt.

The Muslim Brotherhood said it would want to run one-third of the candidates for seats. Then they ran one-half. Then they ran all. Then they said they would not run a president. Then they did and elected a president. And they and the Salafists elected 70 percent of the parliament. But now there is no parliament.

The Parliament was going to pick a constituent assembly but to write a Constitution. But now there is no Constitution. There are no restrictions on presidential powers.

And then there was a Supreme Council of the Armed Forces but that was supposed to restrain the Muslim Brotherhood president. And it was supposed to be restrained by the Egypt-Israel peace treaty and by the hope of getting U.S. military aid. But the president got rid of it and fired the two top people and put in his own generals. And there is no restraint.

And we were told that the Egyptian government had promised to adhere to the Egypt-Israel peace treaty. But when it wished the regime simply violated the treaty and sent forces into the eastern Sinai. And it announced an alliance with Hamas which openly declared its desire to go to war with Israel and destroy it. And Cairo did not demur.

The Egyptian regime did more economic damage to Israel by violating its contract on natural gas shipments than any other Arab regime in the history of the country because Israel had to spend billions of dollars replacing that lost fuel. That is why Israeli taxes are going up and social spending must decline. The U.S. government did not lift a finger to help.

IDF stations Iron Dome in Eilat amid Grad threat

This article from the Jerusalem Post is quite indicative of the situation on the ground. The fact that Israel feels its necessary to place to installations of the anti ballistic missile system, Iron Dome, which is an expensive proposition to use, on the South border facing Egypt gives a pretty good indication of the state of the peace agreement between Egypt and Israel at this time. We know the Egyptians have increased the military presence in the area passed from Israel to Egypt as a condition of the peace treaty above and beyond what that treaty allows for, under the pretense of allowing the Egyptians to fight ‘militants’ there. Clearly the Israelis are quite concerned about a threat from the southern border from one group or another in any case.

The IDF stationed an Iron Dome rocket-defense battery west of Eilat on Sunday. The move comes days after two Grad type rockets were fired at the Red Sea resort city, apparently from the Sinai Peninsula.

The IDF spokesman confirmed the deployment of the battery, saying that the move was part of a national plan to test the system in various locations around the country.

Army of Islam, the Salafi terrorist organization suspected of being behind the terror attack in the Sinai last week, threatened on Wednesday that it would carry out mass suicide bombings in the heart of Cairo, in response to the Egyptian military’s operation against Islamic organizations in the Sinai.

“No one will condemn the people of Sinai if they react with a car bomb in the heart of Cairo,” the group, which advocates for running Gaza according to Islamic law, said in a statement posted on a Facebook page affiliated with it.

“The Muslim Brotherhood has begun persecutions, led by the agent (Egyptian President Mohammed) Morsi,” said the statement. “Things are moving rapidly. Washington tells Morsi it will help him defend Sinai … The United States is entering Sinai on the back of the Muslim Brotherhood.”

Nadia Ghaly’s cousin disappeared 40 years ago. She was introduced to a Muslim man as a young woman, subsequently vanished and resurfaced later three months pregnant wearing a hijab. She was the victim of a forced marriage.

She is not alone. Coptic Christian women are routinely victimized and forcibly converted by Muslims in Egypt, Miss Ghaly says.

In its annual Religious Freedom Report, released July 30, the U.S. State Department acknowledged the problem, but at the same time appeared to downplay it. The report described forcible conversions as “disputed,” asserting that while there were “occasional claims” of Muslim men forcing Coptic women (and sometimes girls younger than legal age) to convert to Islam, these accounts “often included inflammatory allegations and categorical denials of kidnapping and rape.”

Egyptian Court Orders Newspaper Critical of Muslim Brotherhood President Mohammed Morsi Confiscated | Owned by Christian Businessman

(The Blaze/AP) — An Egyptian court has ordered the Saturday editions of a newspaper confiscated over allegations that it insulted Islamist president Mohammed Morsi and instigated sectarian discord, Egypt’s official news agency said.

Editions of Al-Dustour, a privately owned daily, were seized after several individuals filed lawsuits accusing it of “fueling sedition” and “harming the president through phrases and wording punishable by law,” MENA reported.

It was not clear whether the paper was barred from publishing completely, but the Egyptian newspaper al-Masry al-Youm said authorities have removed al-Dustour from newsstands.

Owned by a Christian businessman, the paper has been fiercely critical of Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood while showing strong support for the military council, which took power after the ouster of Hosni Mubarak in last year’s uprising.
