A total of 11 people were killed in an assault on a police station in the north-western region of Xinjiang, the local government has said. It is the latest in a series of attacks pointing to growing unrest in the area.

Two auxiliary police officers and nine attackers were killed in the incident on Saturday afternoon, the Xinjiang regional government said in a statement posted on its microblog.

China’s Beijing airport hit in blast protest

Xinhua showed several medical workers providing emergency treatment, with police officers also at the scene.

The man was named by Chinese state broadcaster CCTV as Ji Zhongxing, 34, from Shandong province in China’s north-east. The explosive device consisted of gunpowder from fireworks, CCTV reported.

Officials say order has been restored at the airport and there is no disruption to flights.

At least 27 people have been killed after gangs armed with knives attacked a police station and a local government building in a remote region of western China today, according to state media.

The Xinhua agency said mobs in the Xinjiang region – home to a large Muslim Uighur minority – set upon buildings in the township of Lukqun at around 6am local time, stabbing people and setting fire to police cars.

Nine police officers and security guards and eight civilians were killed before police opened fire on the attackers, leaving 10 dead, regional Communist Party officials told the agency.

The reported unrest in the region was the deadliest since July 2009, when nearly 200 people were killed in riots pitting Uighurs against ethnic Chinese in the region’s capital Urumqi.

The reasons for today’s attacks were not immediately clear.

A Chinese man in Pakistani-administered Kashmir has been taken into protective custody after he was accused of desecrating the Koran, officials say.

The man, named only as Mr Lee, works for a Chinese consortium that is building a dam in Kashmir.

A police official told the BBC that Mr Lee was held to prevent him from being lynched by an angry mob.

Allegations of blasphemy are taken very seriously in Pakistan with a number of controversial recent prosecutions.

Kashmir’s chief of police has assembled a committee of officials, politicians, local clerics and journalists to investigate the matter.

The police have not yet registered a case, saying they will wait for the committee’s report.

This is the first time a foreigner has been accused of desecrating holy scriptures under Pakistan law, the BBC’s Zulfiqar Ali reports.

An official in the town of Muzaffarabad, close to where the alleged incident took place, said that the accusation was linked to a dispute which had taken place between Mr Lee and a local doctor hired by the consortium.

China has in the past blamed Uighur groups in Xinjiang, some with ties to groups based in Pakistan, for carrying out violent attacks in Kashgar and Hotan, southern cities which are close to the border with PoK.

At least 21 people have been killed in violence in China’s far western Xinjiang region in Kashgar, a prefecture which borders Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and has been the site of intermittent bomb attacks and ethnic unrest.

Fifteen people, including police officers and community workers, were killed in violence on Tuesday afternoon, State media reported. Six others, described by the authorities as “mobsters” who were planning a terror attack, had been shot dead by police, while eight suspects had been arrested.

The attacks took place in the Bachu county of Kashgar, a county in the far-western “autonomous region” which is predominantly inhabited by Uighurs, a Muslim ethnic Turkic group and one of China’s 55 minorities.

2. Pay for a few hundred leftists and a film crew to go to China and protest the newly dubbed, ‘Apartheid wall’ that China built for exactly the same reason as Israel built hers, but point out the actual and factual stunning lack of diversity inside the Chinese apartheid wall and profound and enriching diversity outside of it and hey presto! at least that is one less thing for Israel to have to constantly defend itself about.

Danone, which makes Aptamil and Cow & Gate – the market leaders in the UK – has asked supermarkets and chemists to limit purchases to just two 900g tins per purchase. Asda, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Morrisons have already agreed to limit purchases to two units per customer and more retailers are expected to follow suit.

A recently appointed official of a county in northwestern China’s Xinjiang region is cracking down on religious activities—from mandatory daily prayers to traditional burial rites—of the mostly Muslim Uyghurs, causing much anxiety among the community.

Vice governor Haki had severely tightened restrictions since taking office two years ago, forcing residents to hold religious practices normally performed at home in mosques, where women and anyone under age 18 are not permitted, according to Uyghurs in Ghulja county in Xinjiang’s Ili autonomous prefecture.

A Uyghur woman said that in a recent incident plainclothes officers took photos of a group of children at a mosque with their parents as part of prayer ceremonies for a recently-deceased relative, prompting a “Cultural Revolution-style self-criticism” led by Haki in the house of worship.

Security firm Mandiant has published an unusually detailed report documenting China-sponsored hacking intrusions that have siphoned terabytes of sensitive data from 141 organizations over the past seven years.

The 74-page study is only the latest report to lay a battery of computer intrusions at the feet at hackers linked to China’s government or military apparatus. But until now, many of those claims lacked crucial details, opening them up to skeptics who complained that the lack of specificity made it difficult or impossible to conclude Chinese actors were behind attacks targeting US governmental agencies, corporations, and human rights organizations. Given the anonymity that shrouds most network intrusions, critics have pointed out, the use of Chinese domain names, IP addresses, and localized language in computer espionage campaigns could almost as easily have been chosen by perpetrators from other countries who want to divert the attention of investigators.
