Suspect in package bomb investigation arrested in Florida, DOJ confirms

CNN broke the news, followed soon after by an NBC News report that a man “has been taken into custody for questioning.” Both reports cited unnamed law-enforcement sources.

 

Sarah Isgur Flores, director of public affairs at the Department of Justice, confirmed the news on Twitter: “We can confirm one person is in custody,” Flores tweeted.

She said there will be a press conference at 2:30 p.m.

The suspect’s identity and his role in the plot remain unclear.

It was also not immediately clear where in the state the person was arrested. Earlier reports had indicated the investigation was focusing on South Florida, including a USPS facility in Opa-locka.

The packages — described as similar in appearance and design to pipe bombs — were addressed to former President Barack Obama, former Vice President Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton.

Cologne: ‘Islamic State Sympathiser’ Takes Hostage, Sets Fires

Heavily armed police units deployed to the German city of Cologne Monday after shots were reported to have been fired and a hostage taken at the city’s central rail station.

Travellers were ordered to evacuate the large central station, which sits on Cologne’s Dom Platz beneath the city’s historic cathedral early Monday afternoon.

Update 1700BST: Attacker spoke in Arabic about Islamic State

The Cologne hostage situation is now over, German police have stormed the pharmacy where the alleged attacker is reported to have holed up with a captured woman, having previously attacked a 14-year-old girl with fire at a McDonald’s restaurant.

 

Cologne’s Express newspaper reports both the hostage and the attacker have been injured. The suspect is reported to have spoken in Arabic about the Islamic State.

On Monday, the police moved out to sound a large alarm at Cologne Central Station. The information about the situation on site was initially contradictory, but in the meantime the authorities have confirmed that a hostage-taking was in progress. According to the news program “WDR Aktuell” on Twitter, at least one person is held hostage in the pharmacy at the back exit of the station.There have been reports of gunfire and smoke, both of which have not yet been confirmed. Even a girl allegedly set on fire by a stranger was mentioned in social networks. The police called on people via Twitter to refrain from spreading rumours and speculations. The police initially spoke of a “threat situation” in a pharmacy, which was reported to the officers at 12.45 pm.

Several plane passengers who landed at Philadelphia International Airport on Thursday from international flights were reported to have flu-like symptoms, an airport spokesperson confirmed to Newsweek. Twelve passengers, on American Airlines flights from Paris and Munich, Germany, were experiencing symptoms. 

 

“As a precaution, all passengers on the two flights—totaling about 250 plus crew—were held for a medical review and the CDC was notified,” the spokesperson told Newsweek. “CDC, the Philadelphia Health Department and Philadelphia Fire Department personnel performed medical evaluations and assessments. The passengers—except for the 12 affected—are in the process of being released.”

 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told Newsweek it would provide further information as it becomes available. It was not immediately clear whether the passengers were suffering from the flu.
