U.N. Adopts ‘Religious Intolerance’ Resolution Championed by Obama Administration

General Assembly on Monday adopted a resolution condemning the stereotyping, negative profiling and stigmatization of people based on their religion, and urging countries to take effective steps “to address and combat such incidents.”
No member state called for a recorded vote on the text, which was as a result adopted “by consensus.”
The resolution, an initiative of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), is based on one passed by the U.N.’s Human Rights Council in Geneva last spring. The State Department last week hosted a meeting to discuss ways of “implementing” it.
Every year since 1999 the OIC has steered through the U.N.’s human rights apparatus a resolution condemning the “defamation of religion,” which for the bloc of 56 Muslim states covered incidents ranging from satirizing Mohammed in a newspaper cartoon to criticism of shari’a and post-9/11 security check profiling.
Critics regard the measure as an attempt to outlaw valid and critical scrutiny of Islamic teachings, as some OIC states do through controversial blasphemy laws at home.
Strongly opposed by mostly Western democracies, the divisive “defamation” resolution received a dwindling number of votes each year, with the margin of success falling from 57 votes in 2007 to 19 in 2009 and just 12 last year.
This year’s text was a departure, in that it dropped the “defamation” language and included a paragraph that reaffirms “the positive role that the exercise of the right to freedom of opinion and expression and the full respect for the freedom to seek, receive and impart information can play in strengthening democracy and combating religious intolerance.”
The nod to freedom of expression won the resolution the support of the U.S. and other democracies, with the Obama administration and others hailing it as a breakthrough after years of acrimonious debate.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton took the opportunity of the State Department-hosted talks with foreign governments, the OIC and other international bodies last week to stress the importance of freedom of speech in the U.S. She argued that “the best way to treat offensive speech is by people either ignoring it or combating it with good arguments and good speech that overwhelms it.”
Saudi initiative singled out for praise
Nonetheless, the resolution adopted in New York on Monday does contain elements that concern some free speech and religious freedom advocates.
It calls on states “to take effective measures to ensure that public functionaries in the conduct of their public duties do not discriminate against an individual on the basis of religion or belief.”
Governments also are expected to make “a strong effort to counter religious profiling, which is understood to be the invidious use of religion as a criterion in conducting questionings, searches and other law enforcement investigative procedures.”
“Effective measures” to counter cases of religious stereotyping and stigmatization include education, interfaith dialogue and “training of government officials.”
And in the worst cases, those of “incitement to imminent violence” based on religion, the resolution calls on countries to implement “measures to criminalize” such behavior.
Also of note is the fact that the resolution singles out for praise only one interfaith initiative – and that initiative was established by Saudi Arabia, a leading OIC member-state with a long history of enforcing blasphemy laws. Continue Reading →
Saudi woman beheaded for practising ‘sorcery’
Any women’s rights groups want to take this on? (Queue sound of crickets)

NDTV.COM
Riyadh: A Saudi woman was beheaded on Monday after being convicted of practising sorcery, which is banned in the ultra-conservative kingdom, the interior ministry said.
Amina bin Abdulhalim Nassar was executed in the northern province of Jawf for “practising witchcraft and sorcery,” the ministry said in a statement carried by SPA state news agency.
It is not clear how many women have been executed in the desert-kingdom, but another woman was beheaded in October for killing her husband by setting his house on fire.
The beheading took to 73 the number of executions in Saudi Arabia this year.
In September, Amnesty International called on the Muslim kingdom where 140 people were on death row to establish an “immediate moratorium on executions.”
The rights group said Saudi Arabia was one of a minority of states which voted against a UN General Assembly resolution last December calling for a worldwide moratorium on executions.
Rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under Saudi Arabia’s strict interpretation of Islamic sharia law.
Amnesty International says Saudi Arabia executed 27 convicts in 2010, compared to 67 executions announced the year before.

Saudis fear there will be ‘no more virgins’ and people will turn gay if female drive ban is lifted
From The Daily Mail:

Repealing a ban on women drivers in Saudi Arabia would result in ‘no more virgins’, the country’s religious council has warned.
A ‘scientific’ report claims relaxing the ban would also see more Saudis – both men and women – turn to homosexuality and pornography.
The startling conclusions were drawn by Muslim scholars at the Majlis al-Ifta’ al-A’ala, Saudi Arabia’s highest religious council, working in conjunction with Kamal Subhi, a former professor at the King Fahd University.

I have to wonder. Is this a plot by the Kingdom to prevent women from driving? Or to make them drive like Saudi men?

Women with attractive eyes may be forced to cover them up under Saudi Arabia’s latest repressive measure, it was revealed today.
The ultra-conservative Islamic state has said it has the right to stop women revealing ‘tempting’ eyes in public.
A spokesperson for Saudi Arabia’s Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, Sheikh Motlab al Nabet, said a proposal to enshrine the measure in law has been tabled.

TWO Brits have been killed in a bus explosion in Saudi Arabia.
The couple from Birmingham died as the coach made its way from Jeddah Airport to the holy shrine of Mecca, it was reported.
Another 70 passengers – also thought to be from the English city – were injured in the blast.
Mohammed Ajaz, whose brother-in-law witnessed the explosion, said: “He saw it all and said it was a dreadful sight.
“He knows some people on the coach and said everyone on it was from Birmingham.”
The Foreign Office have confirmed the death of two British nationals but it is not yet known if it was a terrorist attack.
A spokesman said: “We are aware of the deaths of two British nationals in Saudi Arabia. We are in touch with local authorities and next of kin and are providing consular assistance at this difficult time.”

An imam from Canada is under arrest in Saudi Arabia after he was attacked by a mob and beaten while attending hajj, according to witnesses.
Witnesses say Usama Al-Atar was beaten and kicked by men summoned by Saudi religious police before his arrest. The attack took place at a cemetery in Medina early Sunday morning and was reportedly sparked when religious police approached an international group of pilgrims that included the imam, Usama Al-Atar of Edmonton.
Witnesses said angry words were spoken, then things calmed down. That’s when a single member of the religious police approached Al-Atar, offered to shake his hand and then called out to a group of men at a taxi stand.
They rushed in and began beating Al-Atar, kicking him and attempting to throttle him, the witnesses said. Continue Reading →
Saudis behead another ‘wizard’.
I would flunk this guy if I was dean of Hogwarts. What kind of a wizard can’t stop his own beheading?
None of that though, is meant to take away from the primitive, superstitious, absurd, vicious barbarism of the Saudis and their religion, Islam. Tomorrow is Halloween. I would hope that all free thinking people who are deciding to dress as a Wizard or witch or any related identity, consider trick or treating past the Saudi Embassy or community center or mosque and shake your wand at them. Just once. We need to let these intolerant bastards know that we find that kind of action, the public beheading of someone they accuse of the impossible in a parking lot, as unacceptable.

Saudi says Islamic laws will remain in force
Saudi Arabia, reacting to growing global criticism of its Shariah-compliant judicial system, said Islamic laws would remain in force in the world’s dominant oil exporter and there would be no alternatives.
But justice minister Mohammed Al Issa indicated that the Gulf Kingdom has agreed in principle to revise some Shariah (Islamic law) penalties against criminals without elaborating on such penalties.
“The rules of Islamic Shariah enforced in Saudi Arabia are genuine and true…there are no alternatives to them,” he told local newspapers.
“Using the term ‘alternative punishment’ does not mean that we agree that Shariah has an alternative….it will remain a legitimate punishment as strong as what is termed as the ‘alternative punishment.”
Al Issa dismissed what he said were reports that Saudi Arabia, one of the most conservative Muslim nations, had bowed to international pressure and agreed to change its Sharia-based penal code.
“These reports are incorrect…we have not and will not consider alternative penalties under any pressure,” he said.

Jump over to Jihad Watch for this one. This is an important story I believe as it well expresses the ‘hijra’ as we can all expect it to happen everywhere. In this context, the Hijra means a move towards ever greater religiosity, Islamically speaking of course. It also means migration to spread Islamic rule and control. But once that is established, ‘hijra’ means to ever increase the adherence to the orthodoxy of Islam.

Saudi boys stand in line as a teacher takes the attendance on their first day back to school in Riyadh 09 September 2006. Five years after the September 11 attacks, US accusations, claiming the Muslim kingdom’s education system is fostering Islamic extremism, continue. Saudi schoolbooks have lately been accused of promoting intolerance of not just non-Muslims, but also of Islamic sects other than the purist Sunni Salafi school from which the Wahhabi doctrine dominant in Saudi Arabia is derived

Textbooks used in Saudi Arabia’s schools contain virulent forms of anti-Christian and anti-Jewish bigotry that continue to fuel intolerance and violence around the globe, says a new report.
The problem is far greater than the five million students in Saudi Arabia who use these texts every day, said Nina Shea, director of the Washington-based Hudson Institute’s Center for Religious Freedom.
“Because of the Saudis’ great oil wealth, it is able to disseminate its textbooks far and wide,” she wrote in the report, Ten Years On.
“[These textbooks] are posted on the Saudi Education Ministry’s website and are shipped and distributed free by a vast Saudi-sponsored Sunni infrastructure to many Muslim schools, mosques and libraries throughout the world.
“This is not just hate mongering, it’s promoting violence,” she said in an interview. It is exporting terrorism through textbooks.
Christians are referred to as “swine” and Jews as “apes,” while being blamed for much of the world’s ills. Continue Reading →
