Obama refused permission to enter Greek Peninsula containing 25 ancient Orthodox monasteries
My Greek Friend TL translating loosely from this article in Greek News today, tells me that US president Obama requested permission to visit this peninsula in Greece, famous for its ancient Greek, and other Eastern Orthodox monasteries, many of which date back to the eighth century AD. What makes this more interesting is that this peninsula accepts week-long tourists and pilgrims routinely. Yet President Obama was denied access. Perhaps they felt he was more doing pre-operational surveillance rather than actual respectful visitation. I know that’s what I would think.

Greek police report riot at (Muslim) detention camp

Riot police were dispatched on Saturday to put down a riot at Greece’s main migrant detention camp where detainees hurled stones at officers and set fire to their living quarters, authorities said.
Television footage showed fires blazing at the Amygdaleza detention camp outside Athens, where some 1,200 mainly Asian migrants are kept under police guard.
“We have 10 police officers injured by stones and other objects thrown at them,” a police spokesman told AFP.

Police in Corfu have arrested an illegal Afghan immigrant after he robbed a 20-year-old student and callously threw her over an eight-meter coastal wall. Police were surprised to find the Afghan had tattoos of swastikas and other Nazi symbols on his body.

Athens – The Greek Ministry of Education has provided the funds for the construction of a mosque in Athens. Building work is set to commence within the month, once the Council of State rules on objections to the mosque.
The Ministry of Education has struggled to provide essential classroom basics, including books and heating, due to decreased allocations of funds to satisfy demands by international creditors. Even as the department faces a strike by secondary school teachers over increased working hours for less pay, it has managed to allocate the sum of €946,000 to the Ministry of Growth to fund construction of the controversial mosque in Athens.
According to To Vima the Council of State must first rule over objections to the mosque, including objections by the Metropolitan Bishop of Piraeus Seraphim and some local residents. However, if the objections are overruled then funds are now in place to begin construction. Once complete, GR reported the mosque will be transferred for free to the steering committee of the Islamic mosque in Athens.

Interesting. One would imagine that feeding illegals would actually be the crime. They are after all, illegals.
UPDATE: The Greek Government used violence to stop Golden Dawn from feeding people, because they only chose to feed Greeks. Better that everyone starve than discriminate for your own countrymen, even when the people they refused were illegals according to one article.

I would also like to know how the GD handing out food is thuggery while attacking them and forcing them to stop feeding people is somehow anti-thuggery.

Greece pulls statues from Qatar exhibit over nudity dispute

Greece has pulled two ancient statues from an ongoing Olympic Games exhibition in Qatar in a dispute over nudity, a Culture Ministry source said on Tuesday.
“The statues have already returned to Greece,” a Culture Ministry source told AFP, adding: “Organizers in Qatar wanted to cover up the statues’ members with black cloth. So they were never put on display, they went back into storage and returned on April 19.”
EU Wants To Abolish Cross From Greek Flag?
The thing about this is, I guarantee 100% that if they succeed in removing the cross from the Greek flag, some kind of exception will be made for the crescent moon and star perhaps claiming that it isn’t really a religious symbol or some other such nonsense as they do everywhere else. My favorite example of course is this one where Ottawa City Council allowed a mosque to be built with no parking even though the nearby church had to obey city bylaws and provide X number of parking spots per seat. Why? Because in mosques they sit on the floor and so they don’t really use seats and as a consequences, don’t need parking.

On March 25, on the occasion of the Greek Independence Day Parade, the “new” Greek flags which fluttered in the wind in many Greek cities, appeared with only blue and white stripes, without the cross symbol of Christianity.
In the past few months, there have been reports in the Greek media that the European Union has been seriously discussing the possibility of abolishing religious symbols from six out of 27 EU countries that have the cross symbol on their flags: Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Great Britain, Malta and Greece.
Established during the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire, the colors of the Greek flag symbolize the sea that surrounds the country (blue) and the purity of the fighters’ cause (white).

Athens Mayor George Kaminis said the pending opening of the first official mosque in Greece, being built in Athens by the government, will pave the way for more, as many as two or more in each district of the city, spreading the influence of Islam.
During a meeting of the city’s council, Kaminis, a supporter of the mosque that some critics, such as the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party and some Greek Orthodox Church officials are trying to block, defend the construction “for obvious reasons of political equality and defense of the right to free exercise of religion” but also “for practical reasons, in order to put in order the irregular creation of such informal places.”
Bomb detonates near Acropolis

A bomb has exploded near the Acropolis in central Athens causing damage but no injuries.
Apparently targeting the house of one of the country’s shipping magnates, the blast close to Greece’s most famous ancient monument occurred at about 8:30pm local time (6.30pm GMT), following a warning call to a Greek newspaper.
Police said an anonymous caller contacted a Greek daily at 8:10pm (6.10pm GMT), saying the bomb would explode at 8:30pm outside the home of shipowner Nikos Tsakos. Officers immediately evacuated the area.
The bomb had reportedly been left in a black backpack outside the entrance of the property.
Windows were shattered by the explosion and other damage caused, including to neighbouring buildings – but nobody was killed or injured.
Speaking from Athens, Sky News journalist Anthee Carassava said: “Police scrambled to the site, evacuated the area and the residence of a prominent shipowner, who appears to be the target of the attack.
“Bomb experts did not have time to detonate the bomb, which exploded only 20 minutes after the warning call – a very short time in which to react.”
Mr Tsakos was not at home at the time of the attack. One of his guards who was there managed to flee in time.

Athens Mosque Will Cost Greece $1.1M

It will cost the cash-strapped Greek government, which is cutting pay, raising taxes and slashed pensions for workers, pensioners and the poor, some 846,000 euros, about $1.1 million, to build an official mosque in Athens for the city’s Muslim population.
The design, however, is slated to have a modern look and not that of Ottoman mosques with minarets, the newspaper Ta Nea reported, adding that all that’s needed for the project to begin for the Transportation Ministry to begin the bidding procedures for construction.
The government agreed in September of 2012 to go ahead with the plans after an offer from the Turkish government to pay for it was rejected by Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and opposed by the Muslim community which wanted the Greek state to undertake it.
Metropolitan Seraphim of Piraeus said he was vehemently opposed to having Greece build a mosque who said it should be declared unconstitutional and anti-Greek. The idea of a mosque is still touchy in Greece, which suffered under 400 years of Ottoman occupation when churches were prohibited and as the Turkish government has refused to re-open the closed Halki Seminary.

Golden Dawn offices damaged by bomb

A police official, who declined to be named, said the attack was most likely carried out by a far-Left group. “It was a powerful blast that caused a lot of damage,” he said. “It looks like [domestic] terrorism.”
The device packed with dynamite was placed outside the party’s local offices in Aspropyrgos, an industrial suburb west of Athens.
Golden Dawn seems to have posted video to what looks like its own youtube channel of the aftermath of the explosion. Not subtle.
