STRATFOR: Egypt: Israeli Embassy In Cairo Attacked
February 1, 2011
Iranian state-owned news agency IRNA reported the Israeli embassy in Cairo was attacked by armed men in the morning of Feb. 1. According to eyewitnesses cited by IRNA, an Egyptian officer who was guarding the embassy was killed. The attackers reportedly withdrew from the embassy following clashes with the Egyptian forces around the embassy.

Muslim Brotherhood Wants War With Israel
Has even one person in the media stopped to ask a leftist or a Muslim leader why any group or organization would actually desire war with a neighbouring country? How anyone can consider that policy to be healthy or just or acceptable?
Eeyore
From Forexcrunch.com:
Mohamed Ghanem, one of the leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, calls Egypt to stop pumping gas to Israel and prepare the Egyptian army for a war with it’s eastern neighbor.
Speaking with Iranian television station Al-Alam, Mohamed Ghanem blamed Israel for supporting Hosni Mubarak’s regime. Ghanem also said that the Egyptian police and army won’t be able to stop the Muslim Brotherhood movement.
There are doubts about the loyalty of the Egyptian army to president Mubarak. If the brotherhood takes control over Egypt, it will be very messy from the whole region.
In the meantime, EUR/USD , GBP/USD other pairs have enjoyed the relative calm in the Egyptian crisis and regained most of their losses on Friday. An escalation will send them down, and will strengthen the dollar, yen and Swiss franc.

URGENT: Egypt – Israel report STRATFOR
The following is a report from a STRATFOR source in Hamas. Hamas, which formed in Gaza as an outgrowth of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood (MB), has an interest in exaggerating its role and coordination with the MB in this crisis. The following information has not been confirmed. Nonetheless, there is a great deal of concern building in Israel and the United States in particular over the role of the MB in the demonstrations and whether a political opening will be made for the Islamist organization in Egypt.

The Egypt Unrest
The Egyptian police are no longer patrolling the Rafah border crossing into Gaza. Hamas armed men are entering into Egypt and are closely collaborating with the MB. The MB has fully engaged itself in the demonstrations, and they are unsatisfied with the dismissal of the Cabinet. They are insisting on a new Cabinet that does not include members of the ruling National Democratic Party.
Security forces in plainclothes are engaged in destroying public property in order to give the impression that many protesters represent a public menace. The MB is meanwhile forming people’s committees to protect public property and also to coordinate demonstrators’ activities, including supplying them with food, beverages and first aid.

Israeli minister: Hezbollah agents entering Gaza
Washington Post:
By JOSEF FEDERMANThe Associated Press
Thursday, January 27, 2011; 2:25 PM
JERUSALEM — Israel’s minister of strategic affairs said Thursday the Lebanese Hezbollah guerrilla group has infiltrated agents into the Gaza Strip to train Palestinian militants.
Gaza is ruled by the Hamas militant group, which, like Hezbollah, is sworn to Israel’s destruction.
The minister, Moshe Yaalon, Israel’s former military chief of staff, told reporters that “Hezbollah experts can get into the Gaza Strip, like the Iranian rockets are coming to the Gaza Strip.” He said Hezbollah militants can go from Lebanon to Sudan, then to Egypt and on to Gaza.
Israel charges that archenemy Iran sends rockets and other weapons to Gaza militants, smuggling them into the seaside strip through tunnels under the Gaza-Egypt border.
Yaalon said Hezbollah has a special unit, called 1800, to deal with the Palestinian militants. He said the Lebanese guerrillas also operate in the West Bank, paying militants.
Yaalon offered no evidence to support his claims.
Israel has long accused Hezbollah and its Iranian backers of supporting Palestinian militants, but officials have said little about an actual physical presence of Iranian-backed militia in Gaza.
Hamas has often denied that foreign forces are in Gaza. On Thursday, Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum called Yaalon’s claim “fabricated,” and said “all the factions in Gaza are Palestinians.”
Yaalon’s office said Hezbollah has been infiltrating Gaza quietly since Israel withdrew in from the seaside strip in 2005.
Israel and Hezbollah fought a bitter month-long war in 2006, when Hezbollah rained almost 4,000 rockets on Israel as Israeli forces caused widespread destruction in Beirut and south Lebanon. A year later, Israel launched a punishing war in Gaza to try to put a stop to daily rocket attacks by Gaza militants.

US blocks UN condemnation of ‘Jewish settlements’
Israel Today:

The US on Wednesday prevented the UN Security Council from voting on and adopting a resolution that condemned all Jewish communities in Judea, Samaria and on the eastern side of Jerusalem as “illegal.”
The resolution was submitted by Lebanon, but was clearly drafted by the Palestinian Authority. The Palestinians have been threatening for months now to seek UN condemnation of Israeli “settlement activity,” a step they hoped would open the way to UN recognition of a unilateral declaration of independence in Judea and Samaria.
The resolution referred to Judea and Samaria (including eastern Jerusalem) as “Palestinian territory,” and insisted that the presence of Jews there is “illegal and constitutes a major obstacle to the achievement of a just, lasting and comprehensive peace.”
It demanded that Israel forbid all Jewish construction in theses areas in preparation for their surrender to the Palestinian Authority, which would be followed by an ethnic cleansing of all Jews currently living there.
The US representative at the meeting expressed strong opposition to the resolution, and said the Israeli-Palestinian conflict can only be solved via direct negotiations between the two sides. Because of the US opposition, the parties behind the resolution knew it was pointless to call for a vote on the matter.
Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev followed up the US objections by reminding the Associated Press that the Palestinians “have made a series of commitments that all the issues of dispute between us and them should be resolved in direct negotiations.”
By taking this unilateral route, the Palestinians are once again breaking their commitments, said Regev.
It should also be noted that the resolution was an attempt to further solidify the Arab position that Judea and Samaria are “Palestinian territories” that must eventually be returned. The truth is that no sovereign Palestinian entity has ever existed there, but sovereign Jewish entities have.
At best, the areas must be described as “disputed territories,” since both sides have some degree of historical and legal claims. But the Arabs and the UN are constantly trying to rewrite the narrative of the peace process to make it appear that Israel is defiantly holding the lands of a foreign entity.

Jonathan Kay reporting from University of Toronto: Among the Israel-haters
Jonathan Kay January 19, 2011 – 2:50 pm
Last night, I went to the University of Toronto’s George Ignatieff Theatre, plunked down my $5, and, along with about 130 other interested observers, walked into a 2-hour panel discussion called “Exposing Israeli Apartheid and the Violation of Palestinian Rights: A public forum on the second anniversary of the Gaza massacre.”
Speakers included Khaled Mouammar (head of the defunded and marginalized Canadian Arab Federation); gay activist Tim McCaskell; and Jenny Peto, who, by this point, really needs no introduction. The Toronto Star‘s Antonia Zerbisias was originally on the speaker’s list, but withdrew for mysterious reasons, and was replaced by an earnest U of T undergrad named Vivien Douglas from “Students Against Israeli Apartheid” (not to be confused with McCaskell’s group, “Queers Against Israeli Apartheid”; or Peto’s “Coalition Against Israeli Apartheid”).
As someone who’s familiar with both sides of the Israel-Palestine debate, I didn’t expect to hear any new arguments. But it is always interesting to see activists in their native habitat, as it were — preaching to their own.
Mouammar started off the proceedings with a speech about the evils of Canada, not Israel — dwelling at great length about all the ways that his CAF had been mistreated by Stephen Harper’s government.
Then came McCaskell, who focused on the controversy surrounding the 2010 Pride march. A lot of what he said was new to me, because he resisted the opportunity to simply bash Zionists, and spoke more broadly to the dysfunctionality of the Pride organizers, whom he described as “weak, politically immature, incompetent opportunists.” He also spoke at some length — though often cryptically — about tensions between Queers Against Israeli Apartheid and an allied faction known as “The Pride Coalition for Free Speech,” which marched separately in the parade. (McCaskell complained that the “big yellow signs” of the Free Speech contingent somewhat overshadowed QAIA.)
In general, McCaskell comes across as articulate and humane — even if his politics are quite radical. His motivations, I believe, mirror those of a lot of older anti-Israel activists trying to recreate the sense of tilting against evil windmills that lent energy and meaning to their younger years. His experience as an anti-South-African-Apartheid campaigner, in particular, seems to have seeped deeply into his political DNA. (In fact, he lapsed into mini-speeches about South Africa at several points during the eventing). The campaign against Israel allows him to recycle the same slogans and sense of moral righteousness.
Vivien Douglas then took the floor. Like a lot of young campus activists, she speaks in the code phrases with which she’s been programmed — referring casually to the Gaza War as a “slaughter” and “massacre.” She also attacked the University of Toronto for cozying up to Israel and for making life difficult for Israel Apartheid Week activists. She reached her state of highest dudgeon when she recited how U of T president David Naylor had travelled to the hated Zionist state where he’s reached out a hand of friendship to Israeli universities. Several cheeky Israel supporters who’d snuck into the back of the room clapped wildly at this — making it clear that they were applauding Naylor, not Douglas. This earned them a “warning” from the event moderator, who told us that anyone who received three warnings would be asked to leave. Continue Reading →

U.S.: Possible Parcel Bomb In New York STRATFOR
January 19, 2011
Police are investigating a possible parcel bomb at a commercial Israeli bank in New York, according to a New York Police Department spokesman, CNN reported Jan. 19. X-ray imaging revealed the potential device in a large envelope at a New York branch of Bank Hapoalim. According to a law-enforcement source, the letter was addressed to a bank employee. Emergency vehicles have arrived at the building, located in Manhattan, as investigators try to determine the contents of the package.

Europe On Trial: “What is the Judge Going to Find Me Guilty of, Quoting the Koran?”
From Hudson New York.
When Austrian anti-sharia activist Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff stood in court November 28 to defend herself against the charge of “incitement of hatred,” her alleged “crime” was to have given a seminar on the subject of Islam in Europe, during which she quoted the Koran and several prominent Islamic scholars.
The case was suspended until January 18, when she will be back in court facing the possibility of receiving a sentence of up to three years in jail. In the meantime, although the Austrian media has largely refused to report the case, Mrs. Sabaditsch-Wolff has been garnering attention elsewhere for her activism. She recently visited Israel with a small delegation of European politicians. Sarah Palin has called the delegation to offer her support, and author Bat Ye’or has also sent a letter of support.
“It is so important to fight this fight,” Sabaditsch-Wolff said recently, “and not to give up. I feel if ever I have to be in court, this is a very worthy cause.”
Mrs. Sabaditsch-Wolff’s legal problems began when she presented a three-part seminar to the Freedom Education Institute, attached to the Austrian Freedom Party. Veronika Dolna, a young journalist for the Left-wingNews magazine attended the first two parts, recording the second part and about 30 minutes of the first.
Mrs. Sabaditsch-Wolff has since been studying Islam for about ten hours a day in preparation for her court case, although she says that “religion should not be in the courtroom. It does not belong there. How can you explain in court the gates of Ijtihad [questioning,]… that they have been closed.,” she said.
“What is the judge going to do with information… that there cannot be any change in Islam as long as the gates of Ijtihad are closed. What is she going to judge on? Is she judging me or is she judging the Koran? What is she going to find me guilty of? Of quoting the Koran?”
Neither Dolna nor any other journalist with the magazine attended the crucial third part: the then-editor of Newshad reported Mrs. Sabaditsch-Wolff to the authorities, and pressed for a prosecution.. The third lecture was subsequently delivered as planned, and Mrs. Sabaditsch-Wolff says that she “would have learned the most from it because that is the part on human rights, the Cairo Declaration on Human Rights, honor killings, and sharia law and how it affects us in Europe today. She basically missed the most important part.” Surprisingly Mrs. Sabaditsch-Wolff has no hard feelings towards Ms. Dolna, and says that “she’s just a young girl who was just used – and abused, in my opinion. I have no hard feelings towards her. I think she is just a victim of this game that the editor in chief was playing.”
The game, as far as Mrs. Sabaditsch-Wolff is concerned, is “lawfare.” – the malicious use of the courts to try to silence free speech about Islam: “We all know,” she said, “that lawfare is the name of the game.”
The EU recently issued the “Framework decision on combating racism and xenophobia,” which its member states were required to implement by November 28. This requires the punishment of “certain forms and expressions of racism and xenophobia by means of criminal law,” and Mrs. Sabaditsch-Wolff believes that it will be used to silence critics of Islam and sharia.
She recently spoke of this at a conference in Paris, where she derided the EU as totalitarian like “the Nazis and the Fascists and the Communists,” but, she says, they are establishing their dictatorship “quietly and peacefully” through the use of lawfare rather than violence. Nevertheless, citizens of EU member states who fear Islamist terrorism, and violence or intimidation in “Muslim areas” are finding that this is backed up by EU law and political correctness.
“That is what’s so evil about the European Union”, Mrs. Sabaditsch-Wolff said. “Of course there is no violence coming from the European Union itself; it is just paving the way for the violence… Violence within the European Union is happening because the EU is making it possible. The uprisings in Paris, or Brussels, or Rotterdam – they are taking place because the EU is a conduit.”
Those who dare to stand up and be counted find themselves on the wrong side of the law. Mrs. Sabaditsch-Wolff runs off a list of prosecutions against those who have criticized Islam – Geert Wilders, Ezra Levant, Mark Steyn, and so on. They want “to silence us,” she says, “because what we are saying goes against the politically correct doctrine that is now being preached in Europe and the United States. It is there to silence us, but I for one will not be silenced.” That is certainly true: since Mrs. Sabaditsch-Wolff heard about her court case from the media – she was officially informed only later – she has been more active than ever, becoming the poster-woman for Europe’s “Counter-Jihad” movement.
At a recent speech in Paris Mrs. Sabaditsch-Wolff received a standing ovations from an audience of people of all ages and backgrounds. She says that there has been a notable change in Europe over the last year. People no longer accept the reassurances of the old political class; they are “hungry” for information. “The past year,” she notes “started with my story, and also with Thilo Sarrazin in Germany, and the Wilders trial in the Netherlands; and there is a movement starting because people are fed up – absolutely fed up. The political elite are telling them one thing, but what they see is a totally different reality.”
This unwelcome “different reality” of Europe is, at last, beginning to find a more coherent opposition in the form of what is being described as the “New European Right.” The term denotes the significant number of anti-immigration, anti-Islamist and, increasingly, pro-Israel parties in Europe. Dutch MP Geert Wilders is the best known of these, at least within the US; his Party for Freedom has undoubtedly served as something of a model for the movement.
Some of the other parties described as part of the “New European Right” are… Continue reading.

Palestinian Territories: Hamas Will Not Accept Peace Referendum
This pretty much says everything that needs saying about the ‘Palestinian-Israeli’ situation.
From Stratfor:

A senior Hamas figure said a statement by Gaza-based Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh that the group would accept the result of a public referendum on peace with Israel, even if the result were against Hamas’ interests, had been misunderstood, Xinhua reported Jan. 12. Mahmoud Zahar, the senior figure, said national principles cannot be put up for a vote.
