Walking dogs in public or driving them around in cars is set to be banned in Iran.

Now dog owners fear their pets will be ‘arrested’ if they are caught in public and they could also face a fine.

It is the latest attempted crackdown on dogs in the country, where the animals are viewed as unclean.

In 2011, authorities threatened to criminalise dog ownership and said the growing popularity of keeping the pets ‘poses a cultural problem, blind imitation of the vulgar Western culture’.

Deputy police chief Ahmad Reza Radan told the Fars news agency that they ‘will confront those who walk their dogs in the streets. Cars carrying dogs will also be impounded.’

The Government of Canada made the right decision to close down the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Ottawa. Some Iranians living in Canada have criticized the Government’s move for the inconveniences that it has caused them in receiving consular services, such as renewal of their Iranian passports. We must, however, be cognitive of the fact that Iran’s covert operations abroad pose a real threat, and the Government of Canada has a responsibility to protect its citizen, a responsibility which supersede the aforementioned inconveniences. We must also not forget that the Islamic Republic is a dictatorial regime, and as such, its embassy did not represent the will of the Iranian people but rather the radical and hidden agenda of its leaders. Keeping this in mind and as a next step, the Government of Canada must look carefully and extensively into the background of those who wish to come to Canada as well as questionable individuals already here and their affiliation with the Iranian regime.

Iran aims to keep stoning as punishment for adultery, rights group says

(CNN) — Stoning remains the way Iranians — overwhelmingly women — are punished for committing adultery, Human Rights Watch said Monday. The international group blasted a judicial council in Iraq, made up of 12 religious jurists, for inserting a stoning provision into a draft law where it had been previously removed.

Last November, security agents with the country’s judiciary moved the bodies of four women who had been stoned to the Tehran medical examiner’s office, according to reports on the Melli-Mazhabi site, which opposed Iran’s government, the U.S. State Department says. CNN cannot confirm the reports.

According to the State Department’s report, the unconfirmed accounts say the women’s bodies had facial wounds that indicated torture, beatings and stoning.

NEW YORK – Iran will chair a United Nations conference on disarmament in Geneva this month, raising eyebrows from Western powers skeptical of Iran’s own nuclear ambitions.

The UN conference addresses not only nuclear proliferation but policies concerning the race to weaponize space, the production of radiological weapons and the stockpiling or use of other weapons of mass destruction.

In a statement issued Monday afternoon, the United States said it would withdraw ambassadorial representation at the conference in protest so long as Iran retained its chair. Calling Iran’s chairmanship “highly inappropriate,” the statement from the US mission to the UN noted that the Islamic Republic was under UN Chapter VII sanctions for weapons proliferation and human-rights abuses.

Canada freezes trade with Iran over nuclear program, human rights

(Reuters) – Canada will freeze all remaining trade with Iran to protest the Tehran’s nuclear ambitions and its human rights record, Foreign Minister John Baird said on Wednesday.

Canada, which has had increasingly poor relations with Iran for more than a decade, had already imposed a series of trade sanctions. In 2012, bilateral trade was worth around C$135 million.

Baird said Canada was particularly concerned by the failure of the United Nations’ nuclear agency this month to persuade Iran to let it resume an investigation into suspected atomic bomb research.

After disqualifying a number of presidential candidates from the June 14 elections, Iran’s Guardian Council has pared the list down to eight. Remarkably, two of the remaining candidates — Mohsen Rezai and Ali Akbar Velayati — are suspects in the 1994 bombing of the Argentina Israelite Mutual Association (AMIA) headquarters in Buenos Aires that killed 85 and wounded 300.

Until recently, this might have been seen as problematic for a presidential candidate. But the Argentine government’s May 20 establishment of a joint commission to re-investigate the attack makes it all but certain that the two men (and their accomplices) will be exonerated.

AMIA: Prosecutor accuses Iran of infiltrating South American countries

In a 500-page indictment realeased today, the General Prosecutor in the AMIA case, Alberto Nisman, accused the Iranian regime of “infiltrating” several South American countries “by building local clandestine intelligence stations designed to sponsor, foster and execute terrorist attacks, within the principles to export the Islamic revolution.

“Based in countless reports, evidence, testimonies, court and investigative records related to other countries of the region, North America and Europe, including rulings of foreign courts against the Iranian regime, he proved the identical decision-making mechanism, planning and execution of terrorist attacks verified in different countries, which were judicially attributed to Iranian intelligence agents,” according to a briefing sent to the media

Iran election: Cleric rules out women candidates

A constitutional body in Iran has ruled that women cannot run in presidential elections scheduled for 14 June.

Mohammad Yazdi, a clerical member of the Guardian Council, said the constitution ruled out the participation of women.

Thirty women registered as candidates but there had been little expectation they would be allowed to stand.

The Guardian Council is charged with vetting election candidates according to their Islamic credentials.

Observers say there is ambiguity in the constitution about the participation of women in presidential elections in Iran.

GENEVA,  – Iran will chair the United Nations’ most important disarmament negotiating forum during the panel’s May session, which opened today, sparking calls by an independent monitoring group for the U.S., the EU, and UN chief Ban Ki-moon to protest. Click here for UN website.

“This is like putting Jack the Ripper in charge of a women’s shelter,” said Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch, the Geneva based non-governmental organization, which announced it will hold protest events outside the UN hall featuring Iranian dissidents.

“Iran is an international outlaw state that illegally supplies rockets to Syria, Hezbollah, and Hamas, aiding and abetting mass murder and terrorism. To make this rogue regime head of world arms control is simply an outrage. Abusers of international norms should not be the public face of the UN.”

U.N. officials say Iran’s post is merely the result of an automatic rotation.

Three explosions were heard in western Tehran on Tuesday, in an area where Iran carries out missile research and storage, BBC Persian reported.

It was not immediately clear if there were injuries or damage in the incident.

Tuesday’s report of explosions came days after Israel allegedly carried out two air strikes in Syria over the weekend, targeting Iranian-supplied Fateh-110 surface-to-surface missiles destined for Hezbollah.

As the self-declared “capital” of the ultra-nationalist Jobbik Party, the town of Tiszavasvári prides itself on being a showcase for how the whole of Hungary might one day look.

Since winning control of Tiszavasvári’s local council three years ago on a pledge to fight “Gipsy crime”, the party has been on a vigorous clean-up campaign, banning prostitution, tidying the streets, and keeping a watchful eye on the shabby Roma districts at the edge of town. It even swore in its own Jobbik “security force” to work alongside the police, only for the uniformed militia, which drew comparisons with Hitler’s brown-shirts, to be banned by Hungary’s national government.

Confirmation that Israeli warplanes have carried out a series of air strikes in Syria against consignments of missiles being shipped to Hizbollah in southern Lebanon has highlighted Iran’s attempts to reinforce its regional allies in anticipation of military conflict with Israel.

As I revealed last month, recent intelligence reports indicate that Iran has revived its efforts to ship weapons to the radical Hamas movement in Gaza. Following negotiations between members of the Quds force from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, Sudanese government officials and Hamas leaders earlier this year, Iran has chartered a number of Boeing 747 cargo planes to smuggle weapons to Hamas via Sudan.

Two Iranians found guilty of Kenya terror plot

A Kenyan court has found two Iranian men guilty of plotting to attack Western targets inside Kenya.

Ahmed Mohammed and Sayed Mansour were caught with 15 kilos (33 pounds) of explosives in the capital, Nairobi, last June.

They are accused of belonging to a terror network planning to blow up British, US or Israeli targets in Nairobi and the port city of Mombasa.

The pair, who deny all charges, face up to 15 years in prison.

Judges ruled that both men had been proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt of all terror-related charges.

Prosecutors said the suspects had explosives “in circumstances that indicated they were armed with the intent to commit a felony, namely, acts intended to cause grievous harm”.
