German Jewish leader ‘threatened on Berlin street’
BBC:
Stephan Kramer in 2008: The alleged threat happened on the holiest day for JewsAn inquiry is under way after a top German Jewish official flashed his legally held gun at a man who allegedly threatened him on a Berlin street.
Both Stephan Kramer and his alleged assailant have filed criminal complaints, accusing each other of making a threat.
Mr Kramer admitted showing his gun but denied drawing it. He told reporters he had tried to calm the situation.
He said the other man had told him to “get out of the way” several times.
Mr Kramer is general secretary of the Central Council of Jews and the incident happened on Wednesday, when Jews were marking their holiest day, Yom Kippur.
While the motive for the alleged verbal assault against Mr Kramer is still unclear, Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit said: “Threats against Jewish citizens on the streets are disgraceful and absolutely not acceptable.”
The German capital was rattled in August by an assault on a rabbi by a gang who allegedly also threatened to kill his daughter, aged six.
‘Definitely xenophobic’
Mr Kramer told AFP news agency he had been walking home from a synagogue with his four children near the Kurfuerstendamm, one of the main streets in central Berlin.
“The man obviously felt provoked by the open prayer book I was carrying and my beard,” Mr Kramer said.

“There as been an explosion. Something has detonated – we are certain of that,” said police officer Erik Liljenström to local paper Sydsvenskan early on Friday morning.
The police received a call shortly after 1am. Witnesses said they had heard loud blasts near the centre some 15 minutes earlier.
When police arrived at the scene they soon established that there had been some sort of explosion and that someone had tried to smash in the door.
There were loose paving stones lying among shards of shattered glass in front of the entrance, according to the paper.
While damage had been done to the front door, the building had not been damaged in any other way as far as the police could see, but according to witness statements the blasts were heard a few blocks away.

Three militants and Israeli soldier killed in cross-border raid
Telegraph:
Three armed militants crossed into Israel from Egypt, killing an Israeli soldier before themselves coming under fire and dying, the army said.
2:55PM BST 21 Sep 2012
It was at least the fourth cross-border attack in just over a year, underscoring deep Israeli concerns about the security situation in the Sinai peninsula since the ousting of Egypt’s former president Hosni Mubarak in 2011.
“A big terror attack was thwarted,” Israeli army spokesman Lt-Col Avital Leibovich said.
“Three terrorists infiltrated from Sinai into Israel and opened fire towards IDF soldiers guarding the border. The terrorists were well armed and carried explosive belts upon their bodies,” she added.
Leibovich said she did not have any information on the identity or affiliation of the gunmen. Previous attacks were blamed on Palestinian militants from the Gaza Strip and their supporters, who have allegedly established bases in the Sinai.
An Egyptian security source said one of the gunmen died when a bomb he was carrying detonated and the other two were killed in a gun battle with Israeli forces. He added that the nationalities of the gunmen were not immediately clear.

In the early evening, an angry mob broke down the wall of the North Camp base using jeeps and commercial vehicles, according to Egyptian media reports.
Eye-witnesses said that the militants managed to penetrate the fence of the base and set fire to a vehicle belonging to the peacekeeping forces, an observation tower at the entrance of the base, electronic equipment, communication devices and ammunition that were at the scene.
Mass Arab Attack on Jewish Village
INN:
Hundreds of PA Arabs assault Jewish villagers in the Binyamin region, children cry as mob screams ‘slaughter the Jews.’

Hundreds of Palestinian Authority Arabs have been assaulting a Jewish village in the Binyamin region since Saturday afternoon, Tatzpit reports.
Residents of the Jewish village of Esh Kodesh reported that the assault began when three men from the community were walking in one of the town’s vineyards on Saturday afternoon, during the Jewish Sabbath.
The men were attacked by a large Arab mob armed with clubs and sticks, residents said. The attackers apparently came from the nearby PA town of Kotzra.
A security team from Esh Kodesh was called to the scene, as were nearby IDF units. The responders encountered hundreds of PA men armed with rocks and other makeshift weapons, and were unable to stop the assault.
“Children in the village are crying,” community spokesman Aharon Katzuf told Tatzpit. “They can’t sleep because of the screams of ‘Yitbach al Yahud’ [Slaughter the Jews – ed.] and ‘Allahu Akbar.’”
As of Saturday night clashes continued. An IDF spokesperson said, “Security forces are at the scene, and the circumstances are being investigated.”
Berlin police probing second anti-Semitic incident in a week

(JTA) — A second anti-Semitic attack in Berlin within a week has prompted the launch of a state police investigation.
Berlin police said Monday that 13 girls from the Chabad Or Avner primary school were verbally abused with anti-Semitic slogans by four teenage girls fom the neighboring public school before their physical education class was to begin, according to the German news agency dpa. The Jewish school shares the gym with the secular school.
The four alleged attackers, aged 15 and 16, also reportedly photographed the Jewish pupils with their cell phones. Two young men accompanied the attackers.
A teacher tried unsuccessfully to intervene and speak with the teens, but they fled. At least one was wearing a Muslim headscarf, dpa reported.
The incident follows a brutal attack on Berlin Rabbi Daniel Alter, who was beaten by several men after they asked him if he was Jewish. Alter required emergency medical treatment. The attackers also reportedly threatened Alter’s 6-year-old daughter.
Reaction was swift from political leaders and the head of the Jewish community in both cases. Following the latest incident Gideon Joffe, the head of the Berlin Jewish community, said that Muslims must confront anti-Semitism within their community.
Some 11,000 Jews officially belong to the Berlin Jewish community, and it is estimated that another 10,000 to 20,000 live in the German capital.
For some Berlin Jews, the incidents are a disturbing reminder of underlying tensions with Arab neighbors.
Ayala Goldmann, who lives in the same neighborhood where Alter was attacked, told JTA that her first reaction was to consider “wearing a silver star of David pendant out of solidarity because I don’t agree that Jews should have to hide their identity in public.”

Back in December, Tunisia-born Vice Prime Minister of Israel Silvan Shalom called on the Jews still living in Tunisia to immigrate to Israel. That call was rejected with much derision by the remnants of Tunisia’s once thriving Jewish community.
But with new legislation being proposed in the Islamist Ennahda led government, Tunisian Jews may need to rethink their loyalty to a country that no longer wants them.
The Tunisian Parliament is working to pass a law that will prohibit the import of religious books, kosher food, and even visitors from Israel.
The Jews of Tunisia are working to reach a compromise with the government to prevent the parliament from passing the law in a few months time.
In an interview with Makor Rishon, Rav Haim Biton, Chief Rabbi of the Jewish community in Tunisia said, “Today, the government lets us bring in food, medicine, religious and educational books from Israel. If this law passes, our condition will completely change.”
He continued on to say that they are trying to explain to the government that if the law passes, in a few months from now, their relatives from Israel won’t be able to visit, they will not have much needed kosher food items, and, of course, they won’t be able to bring in religious and educational materials.
Other community members were less optimistic as they believe this is the government trying to cut off Jews from their culture. “Behind this law to prohibit the import of kosher products and visiting relatives is their desire to cut off our connection to Israel,” they said.
In November, Tunisia passed a separate law limiting NGOs to importing medicine only from foreign sources in with diplomatic ties with Tunisia, which, obviously, excluded Israel.
Despite the fact that the new proposed law hasn’t yet been passed, Israeli citizens who have requested permission to visit Tunisia recently have been repeatedly turned down, while eight months ago, they could visit.
Compilation of articles on the attack on the rabbi in Germany
Hermes was kind enough to summarize and compile some reports on this incident reported earlier today here. Thank you Hermes for all your consistent and excellent hard work.
“This was an attack against freedom of religion”
[…]
The attack took place at 6:20 p.m. in the Becker Street, which is part of the “painters’ district” in Friedenau. Here where the streets bear the names of artists like Cranach and Rubens lives the Rabbi with his wife and two children. Neighbors who live in the same building are horrified. “We are shocked by what happened,” says a 68-year-old neighbor, “and in the presence of his little daughter.” The district is of middle-class style, but there are certain problems with an “accumulation” of Arab youths who live in a new block of flats in the nearby Dürer Square. The block near the Friedenau train station was inhabited by Arab families, whose children went in groups and were often aggressive. The worst times were some years ago, but then the inhabitants created the citizen’s initiative “Dürer-neighborhood” in order to make improvements in the district.
“Everything got better after the apartment house was renovated,” the pensioner said. This initiative ceased to exist two years ago. The owner of the trattoria in Becker Street, in which the rabbi is a regular customer, confirms that there are problems with the Arabs. “The rabbi is a peaceful, quiet and courteous man. Where do we live, that someone is beaten because of his faith?” the Italian restaurant owner asks angrily. The rabbi had dinner in his restaurant that night, and at that time he saw “Arab youths” walking nearby and lighting their cigarettes. He noticed nothing about the attack, because a hedge obstructed the view. “The rabbi ran towards me, he had wounds on his face,” the owner said. Dürer Square is one block away, surrounded by the railway station underpass, an Aldi-Market and pastel-colored apartment blocks
Jewish community sees an increased number of attacks
After the attack against a rabbi in Berlin, a debate on anti-Semitism and possible causes for the attack has erupted. The four perpetrators, who according to the police were youths of Arab origin, have not yet been detained. The Jewish community in Berlin announced that they are planning to develop their own data bank to register anti-Semitic incidents from 2013 on. “The verbal attacks against Jews have increased,” said Gideon Joffe, the chair of the community.

Rabbi Walter Rothschild spoke about a “new dimension”. He himself has been already attacked and also received insulting emails. Rothschild additionally reported that he no longer wears the traditional Jewish head covering (kippah) in public.
Everyday hate against Jews on the streets of Germany
The brutal attack against a rabbi in Berlin has not taken the Jewish community of the capital by surprise. Anti-Semitism has been increasing for a long time. It is prevalent especially amongst Turks and Arabs.
On Wednesday Muslim organizations and associations have condemned the attack against the rabbi from Berlin. “I condemn the incident in the name of the 17 Arab organizations which belong to this center,” said Ali Maarous, the director of the German-Arab Center.
[…]
The attack was no surprise for the Jewish community in Berlin. “Members of the community have been experiencing increasing verbal anti-Semitism for a long time,” said Gideon Joffe, the president of the community, on Wednesday. “For us it was just a matter of time that words would be followed by concrete actions. We hope that here there will not be an atmosphere like in Sweden, France or The Netherlands, where attacks against Jews happen almost daily.”
Anti-Semitism amongst Turks and Arabs
As recently as August 7, a drunken man insulted a couple in Friedrichshain in an anti-Semitic way and threatened them. One year ago, a 13-year-old was beaten in Prenzlauer Berg because he was wearing a kippah. Some years ago several youths of Arab origin attacked orthodox Jews in Charlottenburg.
Just two years ago, the Jewish community pointed to an increasing level of anti-Semitism, mostly amongst young Turks and Arabs. The Foundation Amadeu-Antonio has for a long time labelled anti-Semitism as the main problem in “huge urban residential areas with predominantly Muslim inhabitants.”
The German-Arab Center sees the origin of anti-Semitism in the Arab countries from which the members of the Arab communities come. “The parents follow the conflict in their homelands daily, even when living here in Germany,” the director of the center, Ali Maarous said. They are furious about what happens in their homelands.
“This fury and the hate then passes to the children,” Maarous said. The center works on the task of educating young people. Youth have been told in numerous seminars to stay away from political disputes and to deal with them in a rational way.

Youngsters beat Rabbi in Berlin
Original translation by Hermes (with much thanks)
From Dei Welt:
A rabbi was beat and insulted by youngsters in the heart of Berlin. His little daughter was threatened with death presumably by youngsters of Arab origin. The state security (office) investigates.
A rabbi from the Jewish community in Berlin-Schöneberg was attacked by four youngsters and offended with anti-Semitic insults, all this in the presence of his little daughter. The 53 years old rabbi was walking on Tuesday evening in the Becker Street with his 6 years old daughter when, according to information given by the police, youngsters of presumably Arab origin attacked him, a spokesperson said on Wednesday.
This case sparked horror. The mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit (SPD – German Socialist Part) labeled this as “a cowardly attack”. The European Jewish Congress also stepped in and reminded of the attack against the Jewish school in Toulouse in March. On that occasion, an islamist killed seven people.
Because the rabbi was wearing a traditional Jewish head cover (Kippa), the youngsters asked him whether he was a Jew, and after this, they suddenly blocked the way of the father and his daughter, and injured him with multiple beatings on his head. The youngsters insulted the victim and his belief, and also threatened his little daughter with death. All this happened on Tuesday at about 18:20 p.m.
Wowereit and Henkel are shocked
After this, the perpetrators escaped towards Ruben Street. The injured rabbi received outpatient treatment in a hospital. The State Police Security has initiated the investigations.
The mayor of Berlin expressed his shock on this case. The aggression was an attack against the peaceful coexistence of people in the capital. “Berlin is a metropolis open to the world in which we do not tolerate intolerance, xenophobia and anti-Semitism”, the mayor expressed.
The police will do everything in order to find and detain the perpetrators. The Minister of Interior Affairs of Berlin, Frank Henkel (CDU – German Christian Democratic Party) added that “this kind of acts will be mercilessly persecuted by the security forces”. No one should feel fear to profess one’s own religion.
Muslims Attack 6-Year-Old Jewish Girl and Father
Front Page Mag:
There’s one thing that the Thousand Year Reich and the Thousand Year Multicultural EU have in common. Neither of them are workable. Both end with attacks on Jews.
A 53-year-old Jewish man and his six-year-old daughter have become victims of an anti-Semitic attack in downtown Berlin which was reportedly committed by four youth of Arab origin. The man had to be brought to hospital with wounds at his head. Reportedly, one of the youth asked the man, who wore a kippah: “Are you a Jew?” He then hit him on the head several times and insulted his religion and his mother. He also threatened to kill the six-year-old girl.
But proving that Jewish leaders are equally clueless in Berlin as they are in New York or Los Angeles, the head of the president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany had these words of wisdom to offer.
