Witnesses have told the Social Justice Network that two suspected Islamic extremists have been arrested after threatening a mosque in Sydney’s south.

Police said two men are in custody after they conducted an operation in Arncliffe in Sydney’s south on Sunday.

They were unable to immediately provide more details or confirm reports on Twitter of a bomb threat.

Jamal Daoud, of the Social Justice Network, said he was contacted by a member of the Muslim community who said two Wahibi extremists had threatened Shia Muslims gathered to observe the day of Ashura at the Masjid Fatima Al Zahrah mosque.

Terror threat muslim preacher walks free

SYDNEY Nov 23 AAP – An Islamic preacher who threatened a terrorist attack on Sydney’s Mardi Gras and accessed child pornography has been sentenced to jail, but immediately walked free because of time already served.

Ibrahim Siddiq-Conlon, a 36-year-old father of four, made a hoax terror threat on the Facebook page of Today FM’s Kyle and Jackie O show, Sydney’s Downing Centre District Court was told.

He wrote a “homophobic diatribe including threats of violence”, Judge Penny Hock said on Friday, adding that she saw the hoax threat as the more serious of the two offences.

“It was clearly a threat that had to be acted upon,” Judge Hock said.

Siddiq-Conlon referred to his organisation Sharia4Australia on the page and also warned Muslims they should avoid the area on the day of the annual parade.

The Sydney architect warned: “Attention, high possible risk of a terrorist attack. Spread the word. Imminent danger.” He had made the message from his own Facebook page, which is in his name.

A loud blast was reported on a bus in the Shaul Hamelech street in the heart of Tel Aviv near the Kirya base. Rescue forces reported of a mass casualty event. Defense sources said it was a terror attack.

Seventeen people were injured; two sustained moderate to serious injuries, three sustained moderate wounds and the rest were lightly wounded. One woman suffered shock.

The wounded were evacuated to the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center. A security source estimated that an explosive device was planted on the bus. Police suspect there may be another explosive device in the area and examine estimations that a terrorist hurled a grenade at the bus and fled the scene.

An eye witness at the scene said: “I heard a boom and then saw a black cloud. Guys in the cab radio said ‘A bus is dismantled.'”

Eye witnesses near the Kirya reported that the base speakers called all soldiers to take cover. Many police cars arrived at the area.

 

Federal prosecutors play recordings, video in beheading plot

RALEIGH, N.C. — Jurors in the federal trial of a man accused of wanting to behead three people viewed videos and listened to recordings about the alleged plot on Tuesday.

Hysen Sherifi, 28, is on trial for charges stemming from accusations that he planned with his younger brother and a female friend to pay a hit man to carry out the killings.

At the time, he was already serving 45 years in prison after being convicted for plots to attack a Marine base at Quantico, Va., and targets overseas.

In court Tuesday, federal prosecutors claimed it is Sherifi’s voice on the recordings with a fellow inmate in which Sherifi allegedly talks about beheading two government witnesses in his first trial as well as another person who reportedly conned Sherifi out of money.

The crude explosive device left on SkyTrain tracks in Surrey by a would-be bomber was powerful enough to seriously damage a train, police said Saturday.

Police forces across the Lower Mainland went on high alert Friday evening as Transit Police hunted the would-be bomber, and swept TransLink’s whole rail system to ensure no more bombs threatened passengers. Three false alarms were triggered throughout the system as staff raised alerts about objects which are not believed to be connected to the real bomb or copycat pranksters.

“There is no doubt that this was a serious device, although somewhat unsophisticated in nature, and was extremely dangerous,” Transit Police spokeswoman Anne Drennan said Saturday.

Police say a device found on the elevated tracks of the SkyTrain line in Surrey, B.C., Friday was an explosive.

Transit Police spokeswoman Anne Drennan says the object was spotted by a passenger on the tracks between the Scott Road and Gateway stations.

She says the device looked like a small propane tank with straps and wires attached.

Five terrorists have been caught apparently plotting an attack on British tourists in an Egyptian resort in the lead-up to Christmas.

The suspected jihadists were arrested by Egyptian counter terror police as they collected rocket-propelled grenades, rifles and pistols in an attempt believed to be similar to the Mumbai attacks in India which killed 166 people in November 2008.#

Authorities claimed that the gang planned to attack the ‘softer target of British tourists’ holidaying at the idyllic beachside resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on the Red Sea.

In his first public speech on the national security threat for three years, Mr Evans said on Thursday that his officers are engaged in an “intense struggle” against Muslim radicals and Irish nationalists.

It is only “a matter of time” before Britain is the victim of an attack from extremists based in Somalia, the director-general of the security service added.

There has been a “persistent rise in terrorist activity and ambition” in Northern Ireland over the past three years, said Mr Evans. Terrorists in Ulster are using increasingly sophisticated weaponry to launch “reckless” attacks that could kill civilians.

Hate preacher Abu Qatada – who is appealing against deportation from Britain – is linked to fundamentalists  accused of plotting a ‘second 9/11’, it emerged yesterday.

The extremist cleric is the spiritual leader of Jordan’s banned Salafi network which is accused of planning a string of suicide strikes in the country’s capital, Amman, on tourist hotels, shopping malls and the British and US embassies.

Homes belonging to UK diplomats and ex-pats were also targets.

The plot was foiled at the weekend by the Jordanian authorities who swooped on 11 cell members accused of smuggling weapons and explosives from Syria for the attack.

Qatada spoke by phone to the group’s leader in Jordan just two months before the start of the plot.

Jordanian security officials said several of those seized were members of the Salafi movement, which brands other Muslims who do not follow its hardline theology as infidels.

The cell had adopted the ‘ideology of Al Qaeda’ and nicknamed its plot as ‘9/11 the second,’ it was alleged.

A Jordanian spokesman said: ‘They were plotting deadly terror attacks on vital institutions.’
