A Jihadist group from Birmingham were to target crowded areas to cause “mass death” in a terror plot that was set to be even more devastating than the 7/7 London bombings, Woolwich Crown Court was told.

Two of the alleged ringleaders had received terror training in Pakistan and made martyrdom videos to be released after they had “blown themselves up”.

They were taught in bomb-making, how to use weapons and poisons before returning to the UK to recruit others for their plot.

That included arranging for others to be sent to Pakistan for training as well.

They planned to detonate homemade bombs in up to eight rucksacks and may also have blown others up with bombs on timers…

A single mysterious computer program that placed orders — and then subsequently canceled them — made up 4 percent of all quote traffic in the U.S. stock market last week, according to the top tracker of high-frequency tradingactivity. The motive of the algorithm is still unclear.

The program placed orders in 25-millisecond bursts involving about 500 stocks, according to Nanex, a market data firm. The algorithm never executed a single trade, and it abruptly ended at about 10:30 a.m. ET Friday.

“Just goes to show you how just one person can have such an outsized impact on the market,” said Eric Hunsader, head of Nanex and the No. 1 detector of trading anomalies watching Wall Street today. “Exchanges are just not monitoring it.”

Hunsader’s sonar picked up that this was a single high-frequency trader after seeing the program’s pattern (200 fake quotes, then 400, then 1,000) repeated over and over. Also, it was being routed from the same place, the Nasdaq

US man suspected of links to al-Qaeda arrested in Yemen

Wait, I could swear I heard Obama say that the war on terror was over and we won!

I guess the only thing missing is who he meant by ‘we’.

A US citizen suspected of having links to al-Qaeda has been arrested in Yemen, officials have told the BBC.

The man was detained in Ataq, in the province of Shabwa, the scene of an ongoing conflict between Islamist militants and Yemen’s armed forces.

He was then transferred by military plane to the capital, Sanaa, where he was being investigated by the security services, the officials said.

The arrest took place on Monday. No details were given about his identity.

The man was wearing Arab clothes when he was arrested in the Sharqa Hotel in Ataq, according to a report on the privately-owned Yemeni news website, Yemen Fox, which quoted a local official.

The suspect spoke English, said he was a Muslim, and had three passports – two US and one German – in his possession, another official was quoted by the AFP news agency as saying.

Heathrow arrests: are Islamists training in Syria for attacks in UK?

H/T EDL Buck

From The Week UK:

Terror arrests reflect a new mood of apprehension over the fallout from the Arab Spring

Column LAST UPDATED AT 13:17 ON Wed 10 Oct 2012

THE ARREST at Heathrow airport last night of a man and woman off a flight from Egypt has underscored fears that militant Islamists are going to fight in Syria, only to return to put their training there into practice in the UK.

The police say the pair, both aged 26, are now being questioned at a central London station – where most terrorist suspects are interrogated initially. The two were arrested on suspicion of “the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism”. Two homes in east London are being searched.

Fears have been growing that new groups, or small cells, of ‘salafist’ or ‘jihadi’ extremists have been moving from the UK to Syria and joining in the fight there, along with affiliates from the Gulf region and local Syrian insurgents.

Eleven Dead in Thai Militant Attacks: Police

Jakarta Globe:

Suspected Muslim militants have shot dead 11 people including three paramilitary rangers in a single day of bloodshed in Thailand’s insurgency-plagued deep south, police said Tuesday.

The rangers were ambushed while traveling in a pick-up truck on Monday in Pattani province in the Muslim-majority border region, where an eight-year conflict has claimed thousands of lives.

On the same day, four Buddhist rubber tappers died on their way to work in two separate gun attacks in Pattani, while a pair of Muslim men were killed in a drive-by shooting in neighboring Yala province, police said.

Two vegetable vendors were also shot dead in Songkhla province, which had been relatively untouched by the violence until a number of attacks this year, including a series of car bombs in April that left 15 people dead.

American taxpayers will shell out up to $16,000 to replace Abu Hamza al-Masri’s hook hands.

The Egyptian-born radical Islamic hate preacher, who claims his hands were blown off while fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan, was stripped of his prosthetic limbs ‘for security reasons’ when he was extradited to the United States from Britain on Friday.

He has demanded the return of his prosthesis, including his infamous hook, so that he can feed and clean himself.

PARIS (AP) — Police carried out raids across France on Saturday after DNA on a grenade that exploded last month at a kosher grocery store led them to a suspected jihadist cell of young Frenchmen recently converted to Islam.

The man whose DNA was identified, named by police as Jeremy Sydney, was killed by police after he opened fire on them, slightly wounding three officers in the eastern city of Strasbourg. Officials said he had been under surveillance since last spring — around the time a French Islamic went on a shooting rampage against a Jewish school and French soldiers, killing seven people.

Ten other suspects, aged between 19 and 25, were arrested across the country on Saturday. One man was carrying a loaded gun, and police found weapons, cash and a list of Paris-area Israeli associations during the raids.

Al-Qaeda blamed for Europe-wide forest fires

Telegraph:

Al-Qaeda has been blamed for a recent series of forest fires across Europe, as the head of Russia’s Federal Security Service claimed they were set by arsonists as part of the group’s low-cost attack strategy.

“One should note that setting fires to forests in the countries of the European Union is a new tendency in al-Qaeda’s strategy of a ‘thousand cuts’,” Alexander Bortnikov said, according to state news agency RIA Novosti, at a meeting of heads of security agencies.

“This method allows (al-Qaeda) to inflict significant economic and moral damage without serious preliminary preparations, technical equipment or significant expenses.”

In linking al-Qaeda to the deadly wildfires, Mr Bortnikov pointed to calls to launch a “forest jihad” by various extremist websites which he said also publish detailed instructions about how and where to best carry out arson.

He said it was very difficult for special services to find and prosecute such arsonists.

Deadly fires have swept through forest land in EU countries such as Portugal and Spain over the past few months, killing scores of people and forcing thousands to evacuate.
