Attack on Newspaper in India for mocking the Islamic State begs the question

1. India: Newspaper offices attacked by enraged Muslims for anti-Isis cartoon

A vernacular newspaper’s offices have come under attack after the daily published a cartoon mocking the Islamic State (Isis) which has angered Muslims in the western Indian state of Maharashtra. The Marathi daily, Lokmat, has been forced to apologise for the piggy bank cartoon.

Lokmat, a leading regional daily, published an article entitled Isis “cha paisa” (Isis’s money) accompanied by a cartoon. The caricature showed an illustration of various currency symbols falling into a piggy bank.

(This begs the all-important question: If the Islamic State is not truly islamic, why do muslims get enraged to violence when an Indian newspaper mocks it?)

Two brothers arrested in India over rape of Japanese tourist

Sajid Khan, 32, and his 25-year-old brother Jawed Khan, both tourist guides, were arrested in the case on Friday, police deputy superintendent Alok Kumar Singh said.

“We have arrested the duo for confining and raping the Japanese student,” Singh told AFP by telephone from Bodh Gaya.

At least 40 arrested after religious clashes in India’s Gujarat

NEW DELHI, Sept 28 (Reuters) – Authorities in India’s Gujarat state arrested at least 40 people after late-night clashes between Hindus and Muslims in the city of Vadodara and suspended mobile phone Internet and bulk text messaging services for four days, officials said on Sunday.

Crowds from the two religious communities pelted each other with stones and set several vehicles alight until police dispersed them using tear gas on Saturday evening after days of tensions in the city, police told Reuters.

Gujarat is the home state of Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is currently in the United States and is scheduled to meet President Barack Obama.

INDIA – Twenty-two Muslims killed in sectarian attacks in Assam

Suspected tribal rebels have shot dead 22 Muslims in attacks in tea-growing state of Assam, where tension has run high during a drawn-out national election, officials said on Friday.

Police said they suspected militants from the Bodo tribe were behind the latest attacks late on Thursday into Friday in a region where tension between ethnic Bodo people and Muslim settlers spilled over two years ago into clashes in which dozens were killed and 400,000 fled their homes.

Bodo representatives argue that many of the Muslims are illegal immigrants from neighbouring Bangladesh encroaching on their ancestral lands,

In one of the incidents, eight people were killed by a group of suspected Bodo guerrillas, said officials.

In another, three members of one family including two women were shot dead, and a baby was wounded, said a senior police officer in the state’s main city, Guwahati.

BREAKING: Fire at Naval Dockyard after blast in Mumbai 

Mumbai: There has been a blast at a Naval Dockyard in South Mumbai.  Fire engines and ambulances have been rushed to the spot. The fire broke out inside the Naval Dockyard at Lion Gate around 12.10 am.

According to reports, fire has been reported from two Navy ships in the dockyard. The cause behind the fire and the blast is yet to be ascertained. Preliminary reports suggests that there were some explosives material present in the submarine Sindhurakshak, which may have caught fire.

Mumbai port has been put on alert.

UPDATED: The Hostage Situation In St. Joseph

 

Here’s what the grapevine is spitting out.

First, a couple of miles up the river from St. Joseph, on the Mississippi side of the river, is the Grand Gulf nuclear power plant. This is important because some new arrivals to town have been freaking out the locals.

It seems the new arrivals are Yemenis. And the locals are freaked out because they’re scared the new people in town have evil designs on Grand Gulf.

Second, we’re told by someone in law enforcement who is in a position to offer actual knowledge of the case that the suspect in question is of Middle Eastern descent, with a name on his driver’s license indicating that he is of a particular cultural and religious persuasion not common to the Mississippi Delta, and that the suspect is 20 years old.

Indian forces shoot dead six protesters in Kashmir

Indian paramilitary forces Thursday shot dead six people protesting at a raid by the troops on an Islamic school in Kashmir, police and witnesses said.

Border Security Force (BSF) troops fired on demonstrators who had gathered outside their headquarters in the district of Gool, two police officers said on condition of anonymity.

“It is mayhem. Six are dead and dozens injured. The death toll could rise further,” said one officer.

India’s Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde ordered an investigation into the shooting and appealed for calm in the tense Himalayan region.

20 children die after eating mid-day meal in Bihar school

Patna: 20 children have died in Bihar, allegedly as a result of food-poisoning from the free mid-day meal provided at their school near Chhapra in the central part of the state, 60 kilometres from the state capital Patna. Most of them who died were younger than 10.

Another 35 children have been admitted to the Patna Medical College Hospital.

The mid-day meal caused severe food poisoning, said sources.

“Nearly 50 students got very sick after eating the mid-day meal at home. By the time they were taken to PSC Mashrak, two children died. By the time they came to us, seven more children had died. We’re treating the children at the moment. Doctors found some foreign chemical matter present.

Mumbai is our next target after Bodh Gaya, claims IM

A Twitter account purportedly belonging to terror outfit Indian Mujahideen (IM) has claimed responsibility for Sunday’s Bodh Gaya serial blasts and also warned that the next target would be Mumbai.

More than 12 hours after the early morning blasts, a tweet by @IndianMujahidin — which claims to be the IM’s official Twitter handle — said: “9 Dhamake Humne Karay (We carried out the nine blasts)”.

The tweet about Mumbai —dated July 6, a day before the Bihar blasts — reads: “Hamara Agla Target Mumbai Hai. Rock Sago Toh Rock Lo, 7 days Left (Our next target is Mumbai. Stop us if you can. Seven days left)”.

The National Investigation Agency and other security agencies are probing the authenticity of the account that, according to sources, originated in Canada. “We will definitely look into who is behind this Twitter account,” said a senior NIA official.

Serial blasts rock Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya

GAYA: Nine serial explosions rocked the Mahabodhi Temple complex in Bodh Gaya on Sunday morning, leaving at least five people injured.

Union home secretary Anil Goswami confirmed that the Bodh Gaya blasts were a terror attack.

According to Gaya Police, the blasts took place in quick succession between 5.30 am and 6 am in the temple complex and near the Mahabodhi tree.

While four blasts took place inside the Mahabodhi Temple complex, three occurred in Karmapa monastery, one each near near the 80-ft Buddha statue and at the bus stand near bypass, DIG Magadh range Nayyer Hussnain Khan said.

Arvind Singh, a member of Mahabodhi Temple Management Commitee said two other bombs, one near the 80 feet statue and one at bus stand have been defused.
