Christian Chrystal-nacht

In Egypt, Christians endure their ‘Kristallnacht’

Recently Jews in synagogues around the world heard an ancient prophesy about a time of tribulation for the Christians. In the haftarah, the Prophet Obadiah hears G-d warning the Edomites (traditionally a Jewish term for the people who eventually made up the Christian world): “Behold on that day… Your mighty ones to the South will be broken… every man will be cut off by the slaughter…”

How eerily reflective of the moment: Within just the last couple of weeks, the Washington-based Christian Solidarity International (CSI) issued a “Genocide Warning” for Christians and other religious minorities across the Middle East, and launched a petition urging President Barack Obama to speak up.

The “Arab Spring” seems to be rapidly springing shut on Middle East Christians, most clearly in Egypt where Islamists scored a landslide victory in the first of a three-stage parliamentary election there. The Muslim Brotherhood – whose goals include world conquest in the name of Allah, and whose motto is “Jihad is our way; dying in the way of Allah is our highest hope” – gained 40 percent of the vote, and the Salafists – who are said to be even more radical – garnered 25 percent. And that’s just in the big cities. As Jerusalem Post columnist Caroline Glick surmises, the results will only get worse as results trickle in from the more religious hinterland.

Meanwhile, Egypt’s yuppies – the grand hope of dreamy Westerners – Twittered and Facebooked themselves a pathetic 15 percent of the vote. They will likely fade away, be absorbed or be wiped out.

While Israel fears for its peace treaty with the Arab world’s biggest country, Egypt’s Copts face a more immediate crisis. This Christian minority, which numbers some 11 million, was established in the land of the pharaohs long before the Islamic conquests. For the Copts, the “Arab Spring” is already a deep, deep, cold winter – and Obadiah’s words might seem a contemporary foreboding.

On December 7, Cynthia Farahat, a Coptic writer and human rights activist, testified before the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission about the plight of her people. Farahat’s colleague Michael Mosad was one of the Christian men crushed by a military vehicle during the October 9 Maspero massacre, triggered by Copts protesting the burning of their churches by Islamist thugs. Farahat told the commission:

His legs were nearly severed from his body. As [Michael’s fiancée] sat next to him …soldiers gathered … brutally beating and kicking his motionless body. Vivian threw her body over his to protect him … but military officers beat and cursed her; they called her an infidel, ‘Christian sons of dogs,’ and worse–

Op-ed: Egypt’s radicals eliminating country’s connection to West, but does

anyone care?

It was barely mentioned in the Israeli and global media, but the following event pertains to the whole of Western civilization: Last Saturday, violent groups of Islamic-Salafi radicals burned the famous scientific institute established by Napoleon in Egypt after its first encounter with the West. Some historians consider it the start of modern times in the Middle East.

The site, L’Institut d’Egypte, held some 200,000 original and rare books, exhibits, maps, archeological findings and studies from Egypt and the entire Middle East, based on the work of generations of western researchers. Most of the artifacts were lost forever, burned or looted.

It’s difficult to understand the modern Middle East without these studies, which were overcome by an immense fire. The large building was situated in the center of Cairo and torching it was a symbolic, intentional act. Those who burned the building and its artifacts meant to burn the era of logic, enlightenment, research and individualism.

This was a grave provocation against the whole of Western civilization, a desire to disconnect from science, research and modernity, while cynically using a Western means – that is, democracy – in order to take power. Continue Reading →

Two speakers from moderate, Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, recite genocidal hadith at conference

Lots of people are clinging tenaciously to the notion that Ikhwan, the Muslim Brotherhood are somehow the horse to back as compared to perhaps, the Salafist party in Egypt.

Here is a segment from 2 clips of speakers from the M.B. at a major conference at Al Azhar in Cairo (we remember Al Azhar as that is where Obama gave his famous outreach speech shortly after being elected and given the Nobel Peace Prize) where At least two speakers at the Azhar rally recited the canonical hadith calling for Jew annihilation.

One was Abd al-Rahman al-Barr, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood Guidance Bureau [clip 1]

Shaykh Muhammad Mukhtar al-Mahdi, professor at Al Azhar and head of the Islamic Law Society, did so too [clip 2]

After being viciously beaten by a 10-strong mob of Egyptian male soldiers, this woman lies helplessly on the ground as her shirt is ripped from her body and a man kicks her with full force in her exposed chest.

Moments earlier she had been struck countless times in the head and body with metal batons, not content with the brutal beating delivered by his fellow soldier, one man stamped on her head repeatedly.

She feebly tried to shield her head from the relentless blows with her hands.

Military police burned medical supplies and detained a number of doctors at the field hospital at Omar Makram Mosque on Saturday, Ahmed Hussein, a board member of Egypt’s Doctors Syndicate, told Al-Badeel newspaper.

Hussein added that three injured people, Mohamed Mahmoud Hanafy, Mohamed Abou Soud, and Tamer Ismail, who left the hospital to seek x-ray examinations, have disappeared.

The Omar Makram Mosque is located in Cairo’s Tahrir Square.

The Tahrir Doctors Organization published a statement on its Facebook page saying that 15 doctors and nine injured people, some in serious condition, are being held inside the Omar Makram Mosque. The statement added that military police threatened to arrest doctors if they attempted to leave.
Several doctors have been arrested by military and intelligence members in other field hospitals in mosques and churches, the statement added.

The Tahrir Doctors Organization said that those responsible for this situation are the military, political forces, and everyone else who could have acted quickly to save people’s lives and secure paramedics and doctors in the field.

Violence has continued for a second day in Cairo after members of the police and army clashed with protesters staging a sit-in outside the cabinet building in the early hours of Friday morning. At least 8 people have died and hundreds have been injured, according to the Ministry of Health.

Amid army crackdown, Egypt’s richest library set on fire

A fire that engulfed the building of the historic Egyptian Scientific Institute on Saturday morning has been extinguished. The extent of the damage has not yet been determined.

The fire started on the lower floors of the building, which is on Qasr al-Aini Street in central Cairo, but later reached the higher floors. The firemen, who arrived very late at the site, could not initially control the fire.

State news agency MENA said that firemen eventually managed to control it, but state TV reported that the fire damaged the whole building and all of its collections.

The building is adjacent to the Shura Council building, and both MENA and state TV accused protestors of throwing a Molotov cocktail at the institute.

Eyewitnesses were reported to have seen protestors throwing a Molotov cocktail at stone-throwing soldiers at the Shura Council building, but the projectile missed the intended target and instead landed in the Egyptian Scientific Institute.

The website of Youm7 newspaper alleged that a protestor was set on fire after trying to set the building on fire. No other source confirmed this news.

The institute is considered the oldest scientific institute in Egypt. It was established as L’Institute d’Egypte in August 1798 by Napoleon Bonaparte during the French invasion of Egypt. Its mission is to advance high quality research in various fields, ranging from biology and mathematics to fine arts and archaeology. Its library contains more than 200,000 books, including the original volumes of the “Description de l’Égypte” (Description of Egypt), begun in 1798 by French scientists in Egypt.

Professor Mahmoud al-Shernoby, the president of the institute, told state TV in a phone interview that the damage is a “great loss” to Egypt and that those “who caused this disaster showed be punished.”

Family of Murdered Egyptian Christians On the Run Due to Muslim Terror

(AINA) — Two weeks after the murder of two Christian brothers by Muslims during the violence that swept the upper Egyptian village of elGhorayzat, the family of the murdered Christians has temporarily come out of hiding to speak of the terror they have been subjected to and decry the impunity enjoyed by the killers, who are walking freely in the village.

On November 28, the two Christian brothers, Kamel Tamer Abraham (55) and Camille Tamer Abraham (50), were killed in revenge for the death of the Muslim Mohamad Abdel-Nazeer, who was injured during an altercation with a village Christian over the building of a fence round the Christian’s house, and who later died in hospital. The Christian man fled from the village with his family.

Mahmoud Abdel-Nazeer, the brother of the dead Muslim, and a mob of Muslims, vowed to avenge his death from all village Copts. They went on a rampage, looting and burning Christian owned homes and businesses, and resulted in the murder of the two brothers and injury to several other Christians not involved in the altercation (AINA 11-30-2011).

Karam Tamer Abraham, the brother of Kamel and Camille, said that his two murdered brothers were killed in lieu of the life of the Muslim, explaining that the Muslims asked for the lives of his two brothers because they are “the Christian elders of the village.” He said that the family is in no way related to and does not even know the Christian involved in the death of the Muslim.

The Tamer Abraham family refused any “reconciliation” with the murderers, and insisted that the rule of law should prevail. “We will get our rights by law, and we will never accept reconciliation, whatever the consequences. We are not in a jungle.” He said that all this happened to the family because they are Christians.

According to Karam, after the murders, Muslims looted three flats in the family house, and their shop, “while the security forces stood there watching.”

The three men who participated in the killings, according to eyewitnesses, were Mahmoud Abdul-Nazeer, Sabry Mohammad el-Sayed and a third man unknown to them.

“Reconciliation” sessions are usually arranged by the Egyptian security authorities, after every violence against Christians, and result in Christians being pressured to give up their rights.

Currently the entire Abraham family are on the run, after having received death threats from the son of the dead Muslim, Mohammad Abdul-Nazeer, who demands that all four family children also have to be killed.

Speaking on CTV Coptic Chanel, Mrs. Hiyam Fakhry, wife of Camille Tamer Abraham, describing her ordeal and how she and her children watched her husband had his throat slit by Muslims “with indescribable cruelty” and for no reason.

Recounting the events of the massacre, Hiyam said that after the Muslims caused violence and destruction in the village, Mahmoud Abdul-Nazeer and nearly all Muslims in the village walked over two miles to their home. They knocked at the door of the family’s multi-story house, and when her husband asked them from their balcony, what they wanted. They answered him “Come down with your brother, we want to slit your throats,” said Hiyam.

Moments later Mahmoud Abdul-Nazeer and the Muslims broke down the door. They first went into the flat of the 55-year-old childless brother Kamel, and slit his throat with a large knife as he sat on his bed watching TV. They injured his wife Wafaa, took her gold bracelets and 50,000 Egyptian pounds in cash.

According to Hiyam, the Muslim mob the ascended to the second floor, where they gave her husband and 18-year-old son, Mina, blows to their heads, before tying her husband’s hands with a rope and dragging him to a room. “Mahmoud Abdul-Nazeer, slit my husband’s throat,” said said Hiyam. “He was about to leave him, believing he was dead, when one of the other perpetrators noticed that Camille was still breathing, and told him to go back and finish him completely off and let his blood spill all over the floor. So he slit Camille’s throat another time” (video of the murdered Copts. WARNING! contains highly graphic content).

All the while their 4-year old son Michael was asleep on the bed. He woke up and saw his father lying in his blood and started calling to him and asking him to wake up. “When my child cried, Mahmoud Abdul-Nazeer said ‘get that child and let’s slaughter him over his father’, but I screamed and begged them until they let him off.”

Hiyam recalled that when Abdul-Nazeer told her husband he has to be slaughtered, she asked him why , as he has done nothing wrong. “He answered me, haughtily and mercilessly, saying ‘he has to be slaughtered today, that means he has to be slaughtered today.'”

Mahmoud Abdul-Nazeer has not been arrested, a fortnight after the murder and is present in the village, according to eyewitnesses. Although a warrant was issued for his arrest, the police said he is on the run. This was disputed by Hiyam, who said that he is in the village and he buried his brother the next day and for two days he was bragged in front of his home that he slaughtered two Copts.

She called on the Minister of Interior and other officials to arrest the killer. “He slaughtered innocent people who in their homes and should stand trial.”

The Christian family was told that security forces do not want to arrest him, in order to pressure them to relinquish their rights against the killer and thereby spoil any court case against him. “They do not want to arrest him as this will lead to Muslim violence in the village, as his crime carries the death penalty,” said Hiyam. “Because they are scared of Muslim violence, the authorities want us to lose the rights of our dead.”
