3 Frenchmen accused of plotting imminent terrorist bombing in France; 1 contacted White House

PARIS – A Paris prosecutor says three young Frenchmen detained last week were plotting an imminent bomb attack in France.

Prosecutor Francois Molins said Monday that one of the men had caught the attention of U.S. authorities by sending an email message to the White House. Molins didn’t elaborate and the U.S. Embassy in France had no immediate comment.

Molins said the three men were in part inspired by Mohamed Merah, a gunman espousing radical Islam who killed Jewish schoolchildren and French paratroopers in a shocking rampage in Toulouse a year ago.

A suspected Islamist from Portland, Ore., was nabbed by law enforcement officers on Tuesday and charged with giving advice and financial assistance to one of three Islamic terrorists who perpetrated a 2009 suicide bombing in Lahore, Pakistan, that killed 35 people and injured more than 300 others,according to the FBI.

Pakistani officials stated at the time that 13 of the dead were policemen and seven were intelligence officials.

Cops yet to trace those who sent terror missives

Haridwar police is yet to trace the persons who had written several letters threatening to blow up major railway stations, popular religious and tourist destinations during the past few months. In all these letters, the senders had claimed they were members of terrorist organisations like Jaish-e-Mohammad, Lakshar-e-Toiba and other groups.

Dehradun Range Deputy Inspector General Amit Sinha said that Haridwar police had received such letters recently and also in the past. Police are on alert and have been deployed at important religious and tourist destinations to prevent untoward incidents.

Sinha further said that some places in the Dehradun Range like Indian Military Academy, Har Ki Pauri and tourist destinations are sensitive and district police heads were instructed to put the police on high alert based on intelligence reports or inputs received from Union Ministry of Home Affairs. The bomb squad and the dog squad too have been put on high alert.

“Canada, breeding ground for terrorism” -CSIS

The head of CSIS, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, warned Monday that Canadians are involved in every al-Qaeda affiliate group and that these groups have mentioned Canada as a possible target.

Richard Fadden appeared before the Senate Committee on National Security and Defence in Ottawa. He told the committee the threat posed by al-Qaeda is changing and becoming harder for authorities to track.

“Al-Qaeda in the [Afghanistan/Pakistan] area was the directing brain that caused 9/11. It has been much weakened,” Fadden said.

“But on the other hand, all of their affiliates…..they are much, much more operational than they used to be, They are beginning to communicate between themselves far more than they used to. And in every single case, there are Canadians who have joined them,” he said.

“CSIS is currently aware of dozens of Canadians — many in their early 20s — who have travelled or attempted to travel overseas to engage in terrorism-related activites in recent years,” he told the committee. Continue Reading →

Fort Hood survivors feel used and betrayed by Obama

In the wake of an ABC News story detailing claims by victims of the Fort Hood shooting that they have been neglected by the military and ‘betrayed’ by President Obama, the chair of the House Homeland Security Committee has sent a letter to his fellow members of Congress demanding that the Obama administration classify the attack as a terrorist act and provide full benefits to the victims and their families.

“It is time for the administration to recognize the Fort Hood shooting for what it is—an act of terrorism,” wrote Rep. Michael McCaul, R.-Texas, in a letter cosigned by Rep. Frank Wolf, R.-Virginia. “To date, the Department of Defense and the Army classify this attack [as] ‘workplace violence,’ despite mountains of evidence [that] clearly proves the Ft. Hood shooting was an act of terror.”

The letter recommends that members of Congress view the ABC News report, “which highlights the broken promises made to the victims of that attack by the Obama Administration. The video contains never-seen-before footage of the terrorist attack and moving interviews with several of the survivors.”

“As this news piece makes clear,” wrote McCaul and Wolf, “the result of this inexcusable [workplace violence] classification … is that victims and their families have not received the same recognition or medical and financial benefits as those wounded or killed in war.”

History rhymes. Kidnapping ransom funds jihad. Again.

It is worth looking in to the history of the US Marines at this point, the creation of which was a reaction to the then enormous ransoms being paid to Muslim naval kidnapping gangs called, ‘The Barbary Pirates’, who’s booty would be used to fund world wide jihad and the white female slaves taken would fill the harems of the more affluent and powerful Muslim war lords.

I wonder when Western nations will decide enough is enough again. Personally, I think not one ransom should have been paid and the already existent potential for projection of force should have been used to send the clearest possible message, perhaps even including the destruction of the Kaaba in Mecca. But it seems that the Islamic forces read us correctly. Too polite to fight back, we see our treasure and our blood and the safety of our women sacrificed for the temporary illusion of good governance.

(Reuters) – Islamist militants are increasingly funding themselves through kidnapping, with al Qaeda’s north African wing likely to have brought in tens of millions of dollars in ransoms in the past few years, a senior U.S. Treasury official said.

The United States estimates militant organizations received $120 million over the past decade, including the ransoms paid to al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), said David Cohen, undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence.

Police defuse bomb in Madrid cathedral

Spanish police on Thursday defused a nail bomb found next to a confessional in the Almudena Cathedral in the historic heart of Madrid, officials said.

A priest found the bomb in a bin bag and evacuated the cathedral, a tourist attraction next to the city’s old royal palace, a spokesman for the archbishopric of Madrid told AFP.

A bomb disposal team came and defused the device, “composed of a detonator, 200 grammes (seven ounces) of gunpowder, a metal gas canister-type container full of nails, and an alarm clock,” a police spokesman added.

(Reuters) – A member of a Turkish leftist group that accuses Washington of using Turkey as its “slave” carried out a suicide bomb attack on the U.S. embassy, the Ankara governor’s office cited DNA tests as showing on Saturday.

Ecevit Sanli, a member of the leftist Revolutionary People’s Liberation Army-Front (DHKP-C), blew himself up in a perimeter gatehouse on Friday as he tried to enter the embassy, also killing a Turkish security guard.

The DHKP-C, virulently anti-American and listed as a terrorist organization by the United States and Turkey, claimed responsibility in a statement on the internet in which it said Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan was a U.S. “puppet”.

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — A suspected suicide bomber detonated an explosive Friday in front of the U.S. Embassy in Ankara, killing himself and a guard at the entrance gate, officials said.
U.S. Ambassador Francis Ricciardione told reporters that a Turkish citizen was also wounded in the 1:15 p.m. blast in the Turkish capital.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but both Kurdish rebels and Islamic militants are active in Turkey.

Al Qaeda has issued a new threat to carry out ‘earth-shattering, shocking and terrifying’ attacks on the U.S. and Europe, it emerged today.

In a posting on a jihadist website, the terror group said the ‘coming strikes’ would target the ‘heart of the land of non-belief’ as well as countries aiding France in its crackdown on rebels in Mali.

The unidentified writer claimed the attacks would be ‘group and lone-wolf operations, in addition to the use of booby-trapped vehicles’.

U.S. officials say they are taking the threat seriously.
