Police in France have arrested 19 suspected Islamists and seized weapons in a series of dawn raids, President Nicolas Sarkozy says.

The raids were in Toulouse, the home of gunman Mohamed Merah, and other cities.

Merah, who killed seven people in three separate attacks, was buried in Toulouse on Thursday after being killed in a shoot-out with police on 22 March.

Police have been hunting possible accomplices but sources said there was no direct link with the raids.

Merah’s brother, Abdelkader, has been charged with aiding him and police are hunting a third man said to be involved in the theft of a scooter that Merah used in all the killings.

Mr Sarkozy told Europe 1 radio after Friday’s raids: “It’s our duty to guarantee the security of the French people. We have no choice. It’s absolutely indispensable.”

The raids were carried out by the domestic intelligence agency, the DCRI, with the help of the elite Raid police commando group, Agence France-Presse news agency reports.

Several of the raids were in Toulouse, particularly the Mirail quarter, sources told AFP.

French Jewish school targeted by Toulouse killer Mohamed Merah receives anti-Semitic calls and hate mail

I dunno but, all this seems eerily familiar.

Rabbi Joseph Matusof (L) reacts in front of the entrance of the Ozar Hatorah Jewish school, on March 19, 2012 in Toulouse, southwestern France, where four people (three of them children), were killed and one seriously wounded when a gunman opened fire.

TOULOUSE, France — The French Jewish school where three children and a teacher were murdered this month has received a wave of anti-Semitic hate mail and calls, the local prosecutor said Wednesday.

Michel Valet said he had received a complaint from the school and had ordered a police investigation to discover the “origin of these calls and letters and the identities of those behind them.”

The Ozar Hatorah school was at the centre of a national drama on March 19, when self-declared al-Qaeda operative Mohamed Merah pulled up on his scooter and attacked a crowd of pupils and parents waiting for class.

Youths reciting anti-Semitic slogans assault 12-year-old boy outside Ozar Hatorah Jewish school in Paris

A 12-year-old boy was beaten outside his Jewish school in Paris by youths reciting anti-Semitic slogans, school officials say, amid continued high security and tensions in France.

The school’s human resources director, Katia Normal, said Tuesday that the child was hit and punched in the back of his head on Monday afternoon as he left school in the capital’s southeast, but did not suffer serious injuries.

Emotions have been running high, especially within the half-million-strong Jewish community, since a gunman shot a rabbi and his two sons, 3 and 5 years old, and the 8-year-old daughter of the principal of a school in the southern city of Toulouse on March 19.

It is also interesting that Al Jazeera will not air video of the attacks in France. It would appear that Al J is a responsible channel, if this is true.

Au Revoir Les Enfants

I would just like to assure readers, that the phenomenon Bruce Bawer describes in this article, and in his most excellent and important book, ‘While Europe Slept’, is in fact taking place in Ottawa schools at this time as well. Perhaps not quite to the same degree yet. It is at a much more polite stage. Muslims demanding their rights to not participate in certain things for religious reasons. But once the Muslim population gets a little larger, it will be demands that none of us get to do the things that matter to us, as it offends them.

From Front Page Magazine:

Two words: Obin report.  Several years ago, the French Ministry of Education appointed a team led by one Jean-Pierre Obin to investigate the impact of Islam on the country’s schools.  Obin and his colleagues traveled to sixty-one schools around France, observed student life, interviewed school employees ranging from the principal to the cook in the cafeteria, and produced a report entitled “The Signs and Manifestations of Religious Affiliation in Educational Establishments.”  Their conclusions were so sensational that the ministry, instead of releasing the report to the public, shelved it.  Fortunately, there exists such a thing as the Internet, and in March 2005, the report – dated July of the previous year – was leaked online.  It is now available at the ministry’s own website.

Every one of the 18,000 words in the Obin report is worth reading.  And sobering reading it is.  As I observed in my 2006 book While Europe Slept,

The report was in large part a catalog of refusals: increasingly, Muslim students were refusing to sing, dance, participate in sports, draw a face, or play an instrument….They refused to eat school cafeteria food that isn’t halal (that is, prepared according to sharia law) and refused to draw a right angle in math class because it looks like part of the Christian cross. They refused to swim because they didn’t want to be polluted by “infidels’ water.” They refused to read Enlightenment authors such as Voltaire and Rousseau because they’re antireligion, Cyrano de Bergerac because it’s too racy, Madame Bovary because it promotes women’s rights, and Chrétien de Troyes because it’s, well, chrétien. They refused to accept basic facts of Christian and Jewish history and they rejected outright the existence of pre-Islamic religions in Egypt.

France is to ban radical Muslim preachers from entering the country as part of a crackdown after shootings by an al Qaeda-inspired gunman in Toulouse, President Nicolas Sarkozy said today.

The President said he would block the entry of some imams invited to an Islamic conference next month, organised by the Union of French Islamic Organisations (UOIF).

The UOIF, one of three Muslim federations in France, is regarded as close to Egypt’s Islamist Muslim Brotherhood.

‘I have clearly indicated that there certain people who have been invited to this congress who are not welcome on French soil,’ Mr Sarkozy told France Info radio.

The crackdown follows the murder of seven people in Toulouse by Islamic extremist Mohammed Merah, 23.

The gunman shot down a Rabbi, three children and three soldiers in three separate attacks before being shot dead at the end of 32-hour police siege.

Following the shootings last week, Mr Sarkozy has announced plans to punish those viewing websites advocating Islamic extremism and going abroad for indoctrination or terrorist training.

Police stop Islamic demonstration in France for Mohamed Merah

AGI.IT:

(AGI) Toulouse – Police in France prevented a group of people from holding a demonstration in memory of the Toulouse killer.
This afternoon, some one hundred riot police officers intervened to disperse about thirty people who were trying to hold a demonstration in memory of Mohammed Merah, the man behind a series of shootings in Toulouse who was killed by the police two days ago after an over 32-hour siege. Most of the demonstrators were burqa-clad young women. Wearing the full-body burqa veil in public is illegal in France. . .

Some aspects of France need to be examined in the wake of the Toulouse attacks

1. Thankfully there are only dozens. Given estimates of something like, ‘five million muslims’ in France, this seems a very low number actually and quite hopeful.

Officials: Dozens of French Muslims training with Taliban in Pakistan:

2. It is however, a good time to be in the granite and marble business in France today…

France: Dozens of Jewish graves desecrated:

3. It would appear that Mohamed’s brother may have had some involvement in the shooting at the Jewish school in France

Report: Laptop of shooter’s brother located near school:

4. …and is being formally charged for it

French authorities presented Islamist gunman Mohamed Merah’s older brother to a judge on Sunday to face charges related to terrorist acts in which seven people were killed in southern France earlier this week.:
