Tuesday 28th August 2012 – A lady has been beaten and left for dead for wearing jeans by Rogo’s protestors as they continue to cause mayhem in Mombasa.

The violence is so intense that Equity Bank next to Barclays at the Baroda roundabout has been broken into by rowdy youths who took the riots as an opportunity to loot. The youths have been engaging the police in running battles since the early morning.

Kisauni MP Hassan Ali Joho has urged the protestors and all Kenyans for peace and order as we approach these issue within the legal frame work.

“’Violence only worsens the situation,’’ he said.

Many businesses shut down in the port city of Mombasa following protests by irate youths who are opposing the killing of Aboud Rogo.

Police who were deployed to contain the riots were overwhelmed by hundreds of youths who used stones and barricaded roads by burning tires.

A GSU officer was injured among dozens others injured in the scuffle.

Several anti riot police are camping at Salvation Army Church after angry youth threatened to burn down the church. Romour has it that PCEA church Kisauni is up in flames but journalist cannot get near there so we will confirm later.

Kenyan rioters and police clash for second day

Riots have rocked Kenya’s second-largest city for a second day. The violence was triggered by the killing of a Muslim cleric accused by the United States of aiding Islamist militants in Somalia.

Police battled stone-throwing youths on Tuesday, firing tear gas and warning shots as the rioters barricaded streets with burning tires in Majengo.

The district is a predominantly Muslim neighborhood in Mombasa, Kenya’s second-largest city. Looting was also reported.

In support of the rioters, Islamist militant group al-Shabaab called on Kenyan Muslims to “take all necessary measures” to defend their religion.

“Muslims must take the matter into their own hands, stand united against the kuffar (unbelievers) and take all necessary measures to protect their religion, their honor, their property and their lives from the enemies of Islam,” the group said in a statement posted on Twitter. Al-Shabaab is considered a terrorist organization by the European Union and the US.

A comedian well-known for poking fun at Al-Qaeda linked Shebab insurgents has been shot dead in Somalia.

Abdi Jeylani Malaq Marshale, thought to have been 43, was killed in Mogadishu late last night.

He was targeted minutes after leaving Kulmiye radio station, where he worked as drama producer and performer.

‘Two men shot and seriously injured Marshale… the comedian was later pronounced dead,’ said police lieutenant Mohamed Gaal, adding that ‘unfortunately the assailants escaped’.

The shooting of Marshale, who also worked for the London-based Universal TV station and who reported having received death threats on several occasions, is the latest in a string of apparently targeted killings against media workers.

STRATFOR: Kenya: Al Shabaab Threatens Ramadan Attacks

Islamist militant group al Shabaab has threatened to carry out attacks in Kenya during Ramadan, the Nairobi Provincial Police chief said July 20, Shabelle Media Network reported. The police chief urged the public to remain vigilant. A police source said security has been intensified in Nairobi, Mombasa and in some border towns.

So, who kidnapped them?

Is it my imagination? did I miss it? Or is there not ONE mention of who actually kidnapped these people in this entire 3:41 second news report on the rescue of these hostages. Not one mention. There are details of the victims and the rescue and everyone who said thank you from the friends servants tennis partners and their pets but not one mention of who did the kidnappings.

Staggering.

NAIROBI (Reuters) – Gunmen kidnapped four aid workers and killed a driver at Kenya’s Dadaab refugee camp near the border with Somalia on Friday, in the first kidnapping of foreigners since Kenya sent troops into Somalia in October to try to crush Islamist militants.

The gunmen are suspected sympathisers of Somalia’s al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab insurgents, regional deputy police chief Philip Ndolo, told Reuters.

In Somalia, al Shabaab said it was not aware of the attack.

“So far we are not aware about any aid workers kidnapped from Kenya’s refugee camps,” Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab, the spokesman for al Shabaab’s military operations, told Reuters.

Kenyan police said the four were nationals of Norway, Canada, Pakistan and the Philippines. A Kenyan driver in a second vehicle was killed during the attack.

They were working for the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) and the group’s secretary general, Elisabeth Rasmusson, was also in the convoy and was unharmed, the aid group said.

A Kenyan driver was shot in the attack had died of his injuries while being treated, Ndolo said. Two other Kenyans were also shot, another driver and a contractor for the NRC, he said.

Police and the military were now pursuing the kidnappers who drove towards the Kenya and Somalia border, police said.

“I can confirm that military helicopters have been dispatched,” Colonel Cyrus Oguna of the Kenya Defence Forces told Reuters.

Ndolo said the car in which the aid workers were travelling had been abandoned by the attackers, and that the group were probably using another vehicle or were on foot.

He could not say if they had already crossed into Somalia.

Here is a stunningly pathetic sanitized and politically correct video from CTV news on this issue. Get ready for this. Look at your watch when the woman is asked who did the kidnappings. You can hear something snap inside as she figures out how to avoid answering that question. While she mentions Al Shabab, she never mentions the fact that they are an orthodox Muslim group. Hell she doesn’t even use the laughable and synthetic term, ‘Islamist’. The rest of the clip she attempts to try and defer attention from them and make it look like maybe it was an organized crime gang that did it. (Although certainly not a Chicago one cause then, you know, maybe Obama might be involved)

Al-Shabab plotting attack in Netherlands

A former commander of the Somali al-Qaeda-linked organisation al-Shabab has said that dormant cells in the Netherlands are secretly preparing terrorist attacks.

The commander, who left al-Shabab because of a dispute with its leaders, said the militant Islamist group is actively recruiting and training members of the Somali diaspora in the Netherlands, United Kingdom and United States to launch attacks in the countries where they have a residence permit.

Dutch public broadcaster VPRO spoke to a BBC reporter, Mary Harper, on its radio programme Bureau Buitenland. Ms Harper had interviewed Mohamed Farah al Ansari who said Somalia was becoming the new hub of jihadism. Al Ansari joined up with government forces and entered a protection programme with the interim government after he stopped activities with Al Shabab.

The Somali commander was questioned by US security officials at the American embassy in Nairobi.

Waging jihad
Al-Shabab is an offshoot of the Islamic Courts Union, which splintered into several smaller factions after its defeat in 2006 by the Somali Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and the TFG’s Ethiopian military allies. The group describes itself as waging jihad against “enemies of Islam”, and is engaged in combat against the TFG and the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM).

The outfit controls large swathes of the southern parts of the country where it is said to have imposed its own strict form of Sharia Law. Its strength is estimated at around 14,000 militants. The group also targets foreign aid organisations, leading to a suspension of humanitarian operations and an exodus of relief agents.

The UN Security Council voted earlier this year to increase AU peacekeeping forces in Somalia. The fighting has shifted away from the capital Mogadishu and government troops have managed to take a strategic al-Shabab stronghold in south-western Somalia.

Terrorists threaten to attack UK if Qatada is deported

Al Qaeda militants have warned the UK it will be attacked if it deports firebrand cleric Abu Qatada.

Al-Shabaab, the Somali based group linked to the terror network, said there would be “disaster” for the British public if Qatada is sent back to Jordan.

Last week al Qaeda itself warned it would “open the gates of evil” if the Government continues with the deportation.

The warning came as it emerged Theresa May could learn next month whether the Home Office blundered over the appeal deadline for Qatada.

A panel of European judges is expected to sit in May to decide whether the cleric’s application was in time – and whether he has a case for an appeal, sources said.

Liberal Democrats said the deadline fiasco, which has allowed Qatada to further delay his deportation, had been an “Olympic-standard screw up”

And Labour piled the pressure on the Home Secretary to explain what assurances were sought from Strasbourg that the Home Office was working to the correct time frame.

Somalia: Sad day as celebration turns to tragedy

ARTICLE 19 condemns the heinous attack on civilians and journalists which took place earlier today at Somalia’s National Theatre, during the first anniversary of the re-opening of the country’s national television station. The suicide bomb, the fourth since the beginning of the year, left scores of civilians and public officials dead and seven journalists amongst the critically wounded.  

“This is a shocking and unacceptable act. The targeting of journalists, civilians and public officials in today’s attack sends a chilling message to all those who want to support the fledgling process of restoration,” said Henry Maina, Director, ARTICLE 19 Eastern Africa.

A former teaching assistant has been jailed for five years and three months for donating £9,000 to fund terrorism in Somalia.

Shabaaz Hussain, 28, gave the money in 2010 to three of his friends who left the UK to allegedly become involved in terrorism in the east African country.

Extremist material was also found in his flat in Stepney, east London.

Evidence was gathered against Hussain when police secretly recorded conversations he had in his car.

Passing sentence at Woolwich Crown Court the judge, Mr Justice Calvert-Smith, said: “These were, as you realised, substantial sums for people living, most likely, in basic conditions in countries like Somalia and Kenya.

“You certainly realised, in my judgment, that some of it would be used either directly or indirectly to help to resource acts of terrorism.”

‘Somali Three’

Hussain confessed to seven counts of fundraising for terrorists.

In total he donated £9,114 which went to Muhammed Jahangir, Tufual Ahmed, and Mohammed Shahim, known as “The Somali Three”.

At a previous hearing, prosecutor Sarah Whitehouse described Hussain’s home as “practically dripping” with extremist material.

The hoard included 26 speeches by extremist preacher Abu Hamza, the court heard.

This is the first photograph of the fugitive terrorist Kenyan police suspect is using the identity of 7/7 widow Samantha Lewthwaite.

The image was taken by an undercover officer as the woman crossed the border from Tanzania with her three children using a forged passport.

Anti-terror police have launched a huge hunt for the mother of three, who they believe was a ‘key financier and bomb-making tutor’ for the Somalian Al Qaeda affiliate Al Shabaab.

Officers on the case have found a devastating arsenal of bomb-making equipment which they suspect was for a planned attack on Western tourist targets in the coastal city of Mombasa.

They discovered batteries, hydrogen peroxide and other chemical ingredients during a raid on one of several Mombasa houses where they believe the woman had stayed until she disappeared in December.

The raid followed a tip-off that Al Shabaab was planning to blow up hotels and shopping centres over Christmas and New Year.

The suspect fled with her three children following the arrest of her co-conspirators, Briton Jermaine Grant and Kenyan Foaud Abubakar.

The house was also used as an impromptu bank where police say the suspect would dole out dollar bills to Al Shabaab recruits – funded by ransom money handed to pirates targeting ships off the Horn of Africa.

Shown photographs of Home Counties mother Lewthwaite, Muslim leaders from the mosque closest to the building said it bore a resemblance to a white woman who had been praying there.

Somali terrorists warn of reprisals on British streets

Islamist fighters in Somalia last night warned of deadly reprisals on Britain’s streets if the West mounted military action in the war-torn east African state.

As a conference on Somalia’s future closed in London, the country’s President appealed for bombing raids on the positions of al-Shabaab, which recently merged with al-Qa’ida. Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed said he would welcome air strikes against the “menace” of the insurgents, warning: “This isn’t a Somali problem, it has to be addressed globally.”

David Cameron left open the option of authorising action against al-Shabaab, which controls much of Somalia, but he made clear his preference for a lasting political settlement.

Last night the spokesman for the Islamist group, Sheikh Ali Dhere, warned it could launch terror attacks in the West if countries such as Britain and the US intervened in Somalia. “Your peace depends upon us being left alone,” he told Channel 4 News. “If you do not let us live in peace, you will not enjoy peace either.”

Al Shabaab was not invited to yesterday’s conference, but Mr Cameron insisted its fighters could be brought into the tentative political process if they laid down their weapons and genuinely renounced violence.

Al-Shabab forces strike inside Kenya

Al-Shabab insurgents have attacked a police station in northern Kenya in what they say is retaliation for Kenya’s ongoing military incursion into Somalia.

Somali insurgent group al-Shabab on Thursday claimed responsibility for the killing of at least six Kenyan police and government employees in northern Kenya.

This coincides with claims by Kenyan troops that they have scored a major victory against al-Shabab in the southern and central regions of Somalia.

The Islamist militia has carried out a series of attacks against Kenyan targets in the border region since Kenya sent troops into Somalia in October 2011. This was in response to a string of kidnappings of tourists and aid workers inside Kenya, which were blamed on al-Shabab.

For an assessment of the latest clashes, Deutsche Welle spoke to Anneli Botha, a senior researcher with the International Crime in Africa Program at the Institute for Security Studies in Pretoria. 

Deutsche Welle: Against the background of the latest clashes, how worried should refugees and humanitarian aid workers in this region be?

Anneli Botha: I think in any situation when you deal with al-Shabab, it’s very difficult to place on a map exactly where they are and keep them under control. The situation is very fluid, and whether it’s a refugee camp in Kenya or whether it’s the whole bush area, it is a matter of great concern at this stage.
