One of the closest elections in history is being fought out in the UK today, but how should you follow it online?
Much has been made of this being the first “Social media election” in the UK but online engagement and campaigning hasn’t quite reached the levels seen in the USA during the most recent presidential race in 2008. Still, on polling day today there are lots of ways of keeping up to date with last-minute dramas and the results themselves.
Let your friends know you’ve voted using Facebook’s “I Voted” button, available to UK users today. This will update your news feed to share the news, and there’s a counter to track how many Facebook users have voted.
The Guardian is using a Twitter mashup to plot votes on a map. Just tweet #UKvote along with the first half of your postcode to be included on the map.
Of course, these tools show more about who’s happy to share that they’ve voted, rather than anything of great use. Far more interesting is ExitPol.ly. Just enter your constituency, tell it who you voted for and you’ll add yourself to a crowdsourced exit poll that might just indicate which way the nation’s vote will swing. Continue Reading →

Following Nigel Farage’s miraculous escape from this morning’s plane crash Lord Pearson, the UKIP leader said:
“We confirm that Nigel Farage has been moved from Banbury to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. We understand there was no pressing medical need for this transfer. He has been visited by his wife.
“Despite being in considerable pain, we deduce that Nigel is back to his something like his normal form. He told UKIP’s Banbury candidate Dr Sebastian Fairweather who gained access to him in hospital to ‘stop worrying about me, get back out there and get out the vote”.
“We also understand that the injuries to the pilot, Justin Adams may be less serious than previously feared though we have been unable to speak to his family.
“It is clear that both men had a remarkably lucky escape.

Former Ukip leader Nigel Farage tonight spoke about his “miraculous escape” from a light plane crash after an election stunt went dramatically wrong.
The MEP, who is standing in the General Election for Buckingham, was pulled bloodied and dazed from the crushed cockpit of the plane which was towing a banner bearing the slogan “Vote for your country – Vote Ukip”.
In a statement released by his spokesman Duncan Barkes, Mr Farage said of the crash, which also injured pilot Justin Adams: “We’ve both had a miraculous escape. We are both very lucky to be alive.”
Mr Farage is being treated at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford where a hospital spokeswoman said he was likely to remain “for a few days”.
Mr Barkes added: “He is not going anywhere today. There is no way he will be at the count tomorrow.
“He’s got two broken ribs, a small chip to his spine and damage to his sternum.”
Mr Farage’s wife Kirsten was at his bedside earlier today but has since returned to their home in Westerham, Kent, to care for the couple’s two children.

Britain’s Conservative party today launched its equalities manifesto, in which it accuses the Labour government of failing to tackle discrimination on the basis of sexuality, gender, race, disability, and age. Under the Conservatives at least half of all candidates considered for boardroom positions would need to be women. Conservatives would also tackle bullying in schools of LGBT students, and would introduce mentoring schemes to help women and ethnic minorities set up businesses.

Theresa May, Shadow Minister for Women, has launched the Conservative Party’s contract for equalities.
She said the contract “underscores some of the most important battles in politics”, on gender equality, racial equality, ending age discrimination, LGBT issues and helping disabled people.
In this contract, as with the others, the Conservatives are saying that if we fail to make progress in these areas and do not deliver on our side of the bargain, then vote us out in five years time.

A British Muslim has shown ‘no remorse’ after desecrating a town’s war memorial with extremist Islamic slogans, a court has heard.
But the Crown Prosecution Service has decided that graffiti proclaiming future world domination for Islam, glorifying Osama Bin Laden and calling for the assassination of the British Prime Minister, ‘was not religiously or racially motivated’.
Tohseef Shah, 21, admitted a charge of criminal damage to the memorial, outside Burton College in Burton on Trent, when he appeared at Burton Magistrates Court.
Islamic message: Tohseef Shah’s graffiti ‘Islam will dominate the world’ was not religiously motivated, according to the Crown Prosecution Service.

The UK Independence Party has threatened legal action if the BBC does not allow the party to participate in Thursday’s televised leaders’ debate.
Party leader Lord Pearson of Rannoch has written to BBC director-general Mark Thompson arguing that the corporation is breaching its own election coverage guidelines by refusing to allow Ukip equal footing with Labour, Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats.
Lord Pearson said that if the BBC does not agree to allow him to participate in the debate by noon on Wednesday, Ukip will apply to the courts for a judicial review of the decision and injunction overturning the ruling. Continue Reading →

Several thousand Ukrainians have rallied in front of parliament to protest against a deal allowing Russia to keep its navy in Ukraine’s Crimea for another 25 years.
Former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko told the rally today that all opposition forces must unite to resist the deal, which was signed on April 21.
The protesters, many from opposition parties, held banners with slogans such as “No to the destruction of national sovereignty” and “Out with the Russian Black Sea Fleet.”
