If my understanding is correct, Dr. Minogue is saying that ideologies of a post-Marxist political nature seeks to rationalize its claims using false scientific arguments that may sound reasonable, but are actually propaganda.
Following this sort of thinking, religious ideologies like Islam do not rationalize their excesses through science, but through what they believe to be the supreme arbiter of all human activity which for Muslims is the koran.
Either way, I feel that these systems of thought are more mystical and magical in nature since they rely on a faith that their assumptions about how the world works cannot be verified or tested by scientific method, but by appeals to emotional impulses.
Once you make these assumptions and justify them through sacred texts as Islam does or through the pseudo-scientific works of Marx, Lenin and Engels or Mao as Communists do, then you can commit any type of atrocity in the name of what is precieved as a greater good.
Vaclav Havel once said that you cannot create a concrete evil in the name of an abstract good.
Ideologies as hard-lined as Islam, Communism or Nazism have proven that they are more than capable of creating evil to support their irrational assumptions.
(Sorry about the lecture, I just had to get that out. William F. Buckley’s show often did that to me when it was on the air and the videos still do.)
