Aboriginals demand the right to exclude black people from their lands.

A week or two ago, I was sent a link on this issue and found it so bizarre I didn’t want to post it till I did a little research on my own. I did find more material on it and frankly, I can’t remember now if I posted it or not. But tonight Blazing Cat Fur sent me this link from MSNBC and hell now its mainstream.

I really look forward to reading the comments on this one.

Cherokee Indians: We are free to oust blacks

US government wants second-largest Indian tribe to recognize as citizens 2,800 descendants of slaves that were held by Cherokees

OKLAHOMA CITY — The nation’s second-largest Indian tribe said on Tuesday that it would not be dictated to by the U.S. government over its move to banish 2,800 African Americans from its citizenship rolls.

“The Cherokee Nation will not be governed by the BIA,” Joe Crittenden, the tribe’s acting principal chief, said in a statement responding to the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Crittenden, who leads the tribe until a new principal chief is elected, went on to complain about unnamed congressmen meddling in the tribe’s self-governance.

The reaction follows a letter the tribe received on Monday from BIA Assistant Secretary Larry Echo Hawk, who warned that the results of the September 24 Cherokee election for principal chief will not be recognized by the U.S. government if the ousted members, known to some as “Cherokee Freedmen,” are not allowed to vote.

The dispute stems from the fact that some wealthy Cherokee owned black slaves who worked on their plantations in the South. By the 1830s, most of the tribe was forced to relocate to present-day Oklahoma, and many took their slaves with them. The so-called Freedmen are descendants of those slaves.

After the Civil War, in which the Cherokee fought for the South, a treaty was signed in 1866 guaranteeing tribal citizenship for the freed slaves.

The U.S. government said that the 1866 treaty between the Cherokee tribe and the U.S. government guaranteed that the slaves were tribal citizens, whether or not they had a Cherokee blood relation.

Mayor needs urgent psychiatric help

I think this may be the best example yet of a city mayor with no sense of proportion, or understanding of the proper uses of the resources of state. This man needs to be in jail on multiple charges. Cities have tow trucks for a reason. That would have done the trick nicely and been within the law. And wouldn’t it be interesting to have a look at corruption and organized crime figures within this mans town as well?

CORRECTION: Not Italy, but Lithuania. Story is here on the BBC site.

H/T PB for that correction

Thank you U.S. of A. and happy birthday.

What faith inspires.

For three years now, I have been immersed in the horrors of what faith in Mohamed and his imaginary alter ego, ‘Allah’ have inspired. Horror. Death. Genocide. Hate beyond speech and destruction beyond the human ability to comprehend. So I just wanted to post something inspired by another religion. Something beautiful.

Lab yeast make evolutionary leap to multicellularity

When I was younger and struggling with the concepts of evolution as generally understood, one of the things that made it very hard for me to accept as a package was the issue of how a single celled creature could become a multi-celled creature by natural selection. That was answered to my satisfaction some years ago when I read about the Volvox, a colony animal that is an obvious intermediary between single celled and multi-celled animals well described in the superb book, ‘The Selfish Gene’ by Richard Dawkins.

This however, is even more compelling evidence. Thanks to Fjordman for the link.

From New Scientist:

IN JUST a few weeks single-celled yeast have evolved into a multicellular organism, complete with division of labour between cells. This suggests that the evolutionary leap to multicellularity may be a surprisingly small hurdle.

Multicellularity has evolved at least 20 times since life began, but the last time was about 200 million years ago, leaving few clues to the precise sequence of events. To understand the process better, William Ratcliff and colleagues at the University of Minnesota in St Paul set out to evolve multicellularity in a common unicellular lab organism, brewer’s yeast.

Their approach was simple: they grew the yeast in a liquid and once each day gently centrifuged each culture, inoculating the next batch with the yeast that settled out on the bottom of each tube. Just as large sand particles settle faster than tiny silt, groups of cells settle faster than single ones, so the team effectively selected for yeast that clumped together.

Sure enough, within 60 days – about 350 generations – every one of their 10 culture lines had evolved a clumped, “snowflake” form. Crucially, the snowflakes formed not from unrelated cells banding together but from cells that remained connected to one another after division, so that all the cells in a snowflake were genetically identical relatives. This relatedness provides the conditions necessary for individual cells to cooperate for the good of the whole snowflake.

“The key step in the evolution of multicellularity is a shift in the level of selection from unicells to groups. Once that occurs, you can consider the clumps to be primitive multicellular organisms,” says Ratcliff.

As a post script, to any Catholic readers, they may be interested in this article, which is not the best one I have read on the unequivocal support the Vatican has for Darwin but it still makes the point.

Your feel-good story of the year. A homeowner forecloses on a bank.

Good to know a little bit of justice is possible. Well frankly justice is even common in Western nations. But this is still nice to see. I would still like to know what the lawyer was saying about the larger problem when the sound mysteriously cuts out. Must be a scarier lawyer advising the TV station.

Security added to site.

Dear readers:

I have had hundreds if not thusands of ‘bots’ join this site as users, and recently had spam adds for pharmecuiticals appearing in the comments by way of generic comments such as:

“Great article. It reminds me of a similar article I read here some time ago”

etc.

So I have added two new plugins that should help although I am not certain how well they work or for that matter, even how they work. If any of you find any problems posting comments or find the proccess cumbersome please let me know by writing me at
