Egypt’s Constituent Assembly tasked with drafting the country’s new constitution has voted to keep “the principles of sharia” law as the main source of legislation in the country.

The article’s language however, remains unchanged from the previous constitution used under the regime of former President Hosni Mubarak.

The assembly gathered on Thursday to vote on each of the new draft constitution’s 234 articles in a potential bid by the Muslim Brotherhood to contain popular anger directed at Islamist President Muhamed Morsi.

The rushed vote was unexpected, coming just a week after Morsi extended the deadline for drafting the national charter by two months. The constitution was previously scheduled to be completed by December 5.

Once voting on the draft constitution is completed, the document will then be sent to Morsi, who will then  be able to call a referendum to ratify it within two weeks.

Egypt’s Constitutional Court was set to rule on the legitimacy of the Constituent Assembly on Sunday. Thursday’s apparent fast-tracking of the process has promoted speculation the panel is pushing through the draft constitution in case the court moves to dissolve the panel.

“Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood members are enraged following news that a 15-year-old Muslim Brotherhood member was killed after an attack on the MB headquarters in Damanhour. Islam Fathy Masoud, 15, was killed and 60 others injured after the Muslim Brotherhood’s headquarters in Damanhour were attacked.

Muslim Brotherhood member Mohammed Abu Homar had to be restrained by fellow members following the news of the attack on their office and the death of the 15 year old. Another Brotherhood member declared “they are infidels, we will teach them a lesson, have they forgotten who we are?”

In response the Brotherhood has officially called on all their members to participate in mass demonstrations across Egypt.  Wael Ghomein speaking in Cairo said, “they {MB} are not calling on their members to demonstrate, they are sending their thugs out to confront us, they are desperate to stop our demonstration against Morsi’s decrees”.

Secular leader Abdul Hassan added “They want to remove us from Tahrir, the dogs want a violent showdown because the Brotherhood have 1000’s of violent hard-line Islamist that were freed from prisons across Egypt by Morsi”.

19 year old Faoud another protestor in Tahrir said “we did not bring down Mubarak for the Brotherhood; this is not why our brothers and friends sacrificed their lives during the 18 day revolution. We have the right to protest here, we do not want a confrontation and more violence”

Egypt is bracing itself for what is set to be wide spread violence acroos the nation, Morsi’sdecree has united the liberals and secularists, the country is divided between islamists and those seeking a democratic state.

Near Tahrir, 3 women have clothes ripped off, chased by mob

The women sought shelter at the Doubara Church, one of the many field hospitals around Tahrir Square.

CAIRO: An angry mob of around 300 men near Egypt’s Tahrir Square attacked and ripped three women’s clothes off and chased them near one of the field hospitals by the square.

The state-run al-Ahram newspaper reported that the women, of an unknown age, had their clothes torn from their bodies by the mob, assaulted and were then chased near the frontlines of the ongoing clashes with police on Sunday early afternoon.

The report said that protesters nearby who saw the incident intervened and rescued the women from further assault.

On Friday, as tens of thousands converged on the main Egyptian square in Cairo, more and more reports of sexual assaults against women once again came to fruition.

One incident that sparked a fervor of worries occurred near the Pizza Hut on Mohamed Mahmoud Street, with dozens of men allegedly brutally assaulting a woman on the street. According to a doctor, the woman was the victim of “mass rape.”

You don’t need to speak Arabic to get quite a bit out of this first report. But if anyone does and there is anything of value in the spoken parts, please let me know. I am more than willing to title it if I get an accurate translation.
