Police outside a Tower Hamlets polling station called reinforcements today after a candidate alleged  that he had been threatened by activists from rival parties.

Chris Smith, standing for the Greens in the London Assembly elections, claimed that one activist threatened to “punch his lights out” when he complained about the crowd handing out Respect and Labour leaflets outside St Matthias Primary, off Brick Lane.

Officers were today guarding polling stations across Tower Hamlets after the Met launched a formal investigation into allegations of electoral fraud in the borough. Police were called in after reports of voter intimidation outside polling stations at previous elections.

It was feared today that activists were “harassing” potential voters. Mr Smith said: “I came down here at about 10am and there were at least 20 Labour and Respect activists handing out leaflets just outside. Election rules state very clearly that each party is only allowed one teller outside each polling station, the rest must be a safe distance away.

“I complained to the official inside and when I came back out the Respect guy started mouthing off to me. When I told him what they were doing is not allowed, he threatened to punch my lights out.

“It’s amazing that this is still going on around here. The groups that gather outside are very intimidating. With all the problems we’ve had in Tower Hamlets this is the last thing we need.”

Police officers are to be stationed at every polling station in Tower Hamlets after the Met launched an official investigation into allegations of electoral fraud.

Officers will man all 70 polling locations in the borough on Thursday alongside borough enforcement officers to prevent voter intimidation.

The measures come as the Met launched an investigation into “unprecedented” evidence of voter fraud in the key London borough less than 48 hours before the mayoral polls open.

Police sources today admitted the measures were unusual.

Concerned councillors have called for election security to be tightened to prevent a repeat of alleged irregularities said to have contributed to the shock by-election defeat of a Labour candidate in a previously safe seat earlier this month.

The Met said it would investigate claims the poll in the Banglatown and Spitalfields ward had been rigged  —  giving victory to Gulam Robbani, an independent candidate backed by the borough’s mayor Lutfur Rahman. He won by just 43 votes.

Feminists line up against football veil ruling

A number of feminist organisations have criticised a ruling by international football body FIFA that would allow female players to wear veils.

 

FIFA banned the wearing of veils in a 2007 ruling, citing safety concerns.

A decision in early March permitted the testing of specially designed head covering for four months. The new headscarves will be fastened with velcro rather than pins. A final decision will be taken on July 2nd.

Such a move would be a “backward step”, according to feminist group “Ni Putes Ni Soumises” (“Neither whores nor submissive”).

“We hope FIFA doesn’t take this decision,” said the group’s president, Asma Guefini, reported in French daily Le Monde. “It would be a backward step for women.”

Some suspect influence is being wielded on the matter by Qatar, which will host the football World Cup in 2022.

“We can see the influence of prince Ali Bin al Hussein, who is one of the vice presidents of FIFA and, of course, of Qatar,” said an anonymous source reported by the newspaper.

In December a number of women’s organisations wrote an open letter to FIFA president Sepp Blatter to demand the ban on the veil be kept in place.

These included the international women’s rights groups Ligue Internationale des Femmes, Femix’sports and Coordination Française pour le Lobby Européen des Femmes (CLEF).

Both the BBC and the Standard are today running hard with the story I broke on Sunday about fake votes and postal vote harvesting in last week’s Spitalfields byelection, narrowly won by Gulam Robbani, the candidate of the extremist-linked and Ken Livingstone-backed mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman.

The allegations have now been referred by the Electoral Commission to the police.  The Electoral Commission was in its usual hopeless form on the World at One this afternoon, claiming there was no evidence of widespread fraud in Tower Hamlets. Here is some more evidence they might like to consider.

At a flat in Hobsons Place, Hanbury Street, a man named Abdul Manik is shown on the council’s official records as having cast a postal vote in the byelection. I called at the flat on Tuesday. Mr Manik’s daughter, Jona, told me that he was dead. He’d died in Bangladesh, where he’d lived for several years, the previous week.

A row has broken out between two Bradford Council election candidates after the Labour Party drew attention to a Facebook picture of a Respect candidate brandishing a gun.

The picture of Asif Khan, who is standing in the Bowling and Barkerend ward, has led Salma Iqbal, a Labour candidate in the Bradford Moor to question his suitability to be a councillor.

But Mr Khan last night called Labour “childish” and “desperate” for trying to make capital from a picture taken when he was on a visit to an aid mission to Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan in 2002. Miss Iqbal, who appears to have mistakenly believed Mr Khan is a Bradford Moor candidate, said: “I’m appalled at this photograph and I imagine fellow residents in Bradford Moor will be too. Serious questions have to be asked about this man’s suitability to stand in an election to become a councillor. How can someone wanting to represent Bradford Moor residents think this is acceptable?”

Center for Security Policy’s 10 part course.

As some of you may have seen, today marked the launch of what must have been a herculean task for the staff at Frank Gaffney’s Center for Security Policy.

A course was launched that probably should be mandatory watching for all American school kids from grade 10 and up but will probably be made illegal in this day of crossed Leftist-Islamic totalitarianism that has infected the Western world today.

Asking people to watch the course is asking for between 9 and 12 hours of people’s time. That is quite a bit even for readers of a site like this where the importance of this material is well understood. However I still feel that it is worth the asking from what I have seen of the course so far.

My plan is to try and watch one a day as I post it. I have posted part I already and it contains a lot of valuable information as well as is formatted well for clear understanding and reference.

Below is a sort of explanation of the course itself which is only about 10 minutes. It is well done, but the course is the main thing. This won’t give you the hard facts the way the course does. But hopefully it will whet the appetite.

A Labour peer has been suspended from the party after accusations he called for a £10m bounty for the capture of US President Obama and President Bush.

Lord Ahmed is reported to have made the call after the US offered a $10m bounty for the conviction of the founder of a Pakistani-based militant group.

Lord Ahmed denied offering a bounty, saying he was talking about “war crimes” in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Labour Party said if the comments were true they “utterly condemn” them.

Lord Ahmed’s alleged remarks, published in the Express Tribune newspaper, were said to have been made in response to an announcement from Washington earlier this month of a $10m bounty for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Hafiz Saeed, the founder of the Pakistani-based Lashkar-e-Taiba militant group.

The Indian government blames Mr Saeed and his organisation of carrying out several militant attacks on its territory, including the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

Newlywed MP George Galloway has been caught in a war of words with the woman who claims they are still man and wife.

Galloway, 57, wed Dutch anthropologist Putri Gayatri, 27, his fourth wife, in Amsterdam at the weekend after becoming MP for Bradford West.

But last night his third wife Rima Husseini is reported to have claimed: “We are still married under Islamic law.”

Mr Galloway married Ms Husseini, with whom he has two sons, in a Muslim ceremony in 2007.

She added: “There’s a misconception you can have up to four wives in Islam but it’s just not true in the 21st century.

“It may have been the case hundreds of years ago but it doesn’t exist now.
