Traveler from Saudi Arabia arrested at Detroit Metro with pressure cooker

Detroit — Federal agents arrested a Saudi Arabian traveler who arrived at Detroit Metropolitan Airport with a pressure cooker, a key component used in the Boston Marathon bombings last month.
Hussain Al Kwawahir will be arraigned at 1 p.m. in federal court for allegedly using an altered passport and lying to a Customs and Border Protection Agent about the pressure cooker.
Al Kwawahir arrived at the airport Saturday from Saudi Arabia, via Amsterdam, according to a criminal complaint filed Monday in federal court.
He told agents he was visiting his nephew, who attends the University of Toledo.

It was an evening of firsts as the Ottawa Main Mosque welcomed US Ambassador David Jacobson on his first official visit on April 8.
Almost 100 people attended the event titled “Strengthening Bridges & Working Together for a Better Future”. Security was discreet and the question period was uncensored which was unusual for a high-profile guest like the ambassador. But a unique set of circumstances had created the space for this gathering. As Ambassador Jacobson explained at the beginning of his speech:
“On the 14th of December of last year, my country suffered a great tragedy, in Newtown, Connecticut, 27 people lost their lives at the hands of a deranged gunman, and among the 27 dead there were 24 very young children. A few days later, I received a card from Mrs. (Shano) Bejkosalaj (of the Ottawa Muslim Women’s Organization) and it was followed by an e-mail from the Imam (of the Ottawa Main Mosque), and they asked to meet in order to express their sympathy and their support. And so on January 4 this year, the Imam and Mrs. Bejkosalaj and Mrs. (Safaa) Fouda came to my office, they came in grief, they came in respect and most importantly of all, they came in solidarity.
Because when children die senselessly, needlessly, tragically all of us serve as their parents. And to me that exemplified the connection between us. It wasn’t about national boundaries, it wasn’t about race, it wasn’t about religion. It was about people reaching out to people.”

‘Mounting evidence’ links Tsarnaev brothers to earlier triple homicide

There is “mounting evidence” which suggests that Boston Marathon bombing suspects Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev were involved in an unsolved triple homicide in 2011, according to Massachusetts investigators.
Forensic evidence from the crime scene matched the brothers’ DNA, and cell phone records put them in the area of the murders on the date they occurred, officials told ABC News.
In the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings, authorities in Middlesex County began to investigate the link between Tamerlan and Brendan Mess – one of the three men killed in the triple homicide.
Mess and two other men were found in a Waltham, Massachusetts residence with their throats slit and their bodies covered with marijuana on September 11, 2011. Tamerlan and Mess were once roommates and practiced boxing and martial arts together.

A Tunisian the FBI says “radicalized” VIA Rail terror suspect Chiheb Esseghaier has been charged with terrorism-related offences in New York following an undercover investigation.
Ahmed Abassi, a former resident of Canada, was arrested in New York on April 22 at the same time the RCMP picked up Mr. Esseghaier and his co-accused Raed Jaser but the case had remained sealed until Thursday.
He was to appear in court at 3 p.m. to face two counts alleging he had fraudulently applied for a U.S. work visa to facilitate an act of international terrorism. The RCMP was involved in the probe, the U.S. Justice Department said.
Mr. Abassi allegedly met with Mr. Esseghaier in New York City earlier this year. During the discussions with Mr. Esseghaier and an undercover agent, he allegedly spoke about attacking the U.S. and supporting terrorists in Syria and Iraq.

A Tunisian man has been charged in New York for lying about his work visa because he wanted to facilitate “an act of terrorism” and authorities say he had connections to the thwarted terror plot that involved derailing a passenger train near the Canadian border.
Federal prosecutors said Thursday that the man has ties to the two suspects arrested recently in what the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said was an “al-Qaida-supported” plot.
Law enforcement sources tell NBC 4 New York that Ahmed Abassi met with the Canadian terror suspects and may have helped to radicalize them. The charges Thursday said he lied about his visa documents in an effort to “facilitate an act of international terrorism.”

Despite the fact that the content of the conversation did not permit the definite confirmation of the identity of “Adil” in question, CSIS was of the opinion that it was in fact the plaintiff [Adil Charkaoui] because of the tight relationship with plaintiff Abdlerazik and Ezzine, and the particular pronunciation of the first name “Used” can be read.
The city of Montreal is not specified, but there is no doubt that it is the metro of the city of Montreal that is concerned according, to sources consulted by La Presse.
The document obtained yesterday as a premiere by Radio Canada also reveals that in 2000 agents of the RCMP that were following Charkaoui surprised him many times stealing objects and documents in cars parked near malls on Rive-Sud.
Theft to finance
CSIS says it has “reasonable grounds to believe” that many thefts and frauds by credit card committed by Adil Charkaoui had the goal of financing his terrorist activities. Some transfers of funds had in fact taken place.
The summary submitted by Canada for its defense recalls also the main points of the CSIS investigation of Adil Charkaoui. He participated in Al Qaeda training camps in Afghanistan, believes in armed jihad, discussed the planning of attacks, on top of having the profile of a sleeper agent. It also speaks of the ties with many Montrealers condemned since then for terrorism, including Ahmed Ressam and Abdellah Ouzghar, Said Atmani, etc., all ex-members of the Montreal cell.
This story of the attack in the metro is a reminder also of a conversation intercepted by CSIS in 2000 and divulged in 2011 by the press, in which Adil Charkaoui and Abousfian Abdelrazik discussed a plan to blow up an Air France plane flying from Montreal to Paris.
Adil Charkaoui was arrested in April 2003 on the authority of a security certificate. He was detained for 21 months before being freed with a multitude of conditions, including the wearing of an electronic ankle bracelet. He was liberated of his constraints in 2009, after the annulment of his security certificate by a federal court.
Since then he has demanded $26 million from the government for all the damages suffered, violations of his constitutional rights, his “arrest and illegal detainment”, damage to his reputation etc.
In his suit Adil Charkaoui states that his “quality of life was annihilated” and that he is “ stigmatized forever, just as much abroad as in Canada.”
He deplores also that from now on “thousands of documents accessible on the internet link him to terrorists so that his reputation is forever stained.”

Suspicious package at Defence HQ2:35CBC News has learned that a suspicious package found Tuesday at Department of National Defence headquarters in downtown Ottawa contained no explosive material of any kind, and was never a threat to the public.
Ottawa Police said initial X-rays of the package showed what appeared to be wires, batteries and a dense material that could have been components for an improvised explosive device.
But sources close to the investigation say that when police destroyed the package to disable its potentially dangerous contents, they found no explosives or bomb-like devices.
