Gun carrying man ends stabbing spree at Salt Lake grocery store

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – A citizen with a gun stopped a knife wielding man as he began stabbing people Thursday evening at the downtown Salt Lake City Smith’s store.
Police say the suspect purchased a knife inside the store and then turned it into a weapon. Smith’s employee Dorothy Espinoza says, “He pulled it out and stood outside the Smiths in the foyer. And just started stabbing people and yelling you killed my people. You killed my people.”
Espinoza says, the knife wielding man seriously injured two people. “There is blood all over. One got stabbed in the stomach and got stabbed in the head and held his hands and got stabbed all over the arms.”
Then, before the suspect could find another victim – a citizen with a gun stopped the madness. “A guy pulled gun on him and told him to drop his weapon or he would shoot him. So, he dropped his weapon and the people from Smith’s grabbed him.”
By the time officers arrived the suspect had been subdued by employees and shoppers. Police had high praise for gun carrying man who ended the hysteria. Lt. Brian Purvis said, “This was a volatile situation that could have gotten worse. We can only assume from what we saw it could have gotten worse. He was definitely in the right place at the right time.”

Very cool new US navy weapon
Once again we see that without doubt the US has the coolest weapons out there by far. The only issue that remains is, does the US have the will to win an armed conflict? Will they actually use it against a determined foe? We will probably know soon.

This sort of thing has happened before in Canada. Some of the best examples happened before the internet so are hard to find. But this needs to be addressed with a great deal of real-rights legislation. I hope the school and the police are properly sued.

Ezra makes a great case to end strict gun control.
Frankly the raw facts are that an unarmed society will always tilt towards totalitarianism and the end of individual liberty. It is a social equation which is immutable. But that takes more explaining and convincing because the people who oppose guns in the hands of the public are themselves unwitting advocates for a totalitarian state even if they also claim to hate government.

Texas Ranchers Using AK47s to Defend Against Cartel Invaders
It is a simple truism that freedom, will require the individual to be able to employ force in it’s defense. We can see that everywhere in the world where hubris made the people, demand that government, disarm the people. It doesn’t take long at all before people willing to use the force that the people forego, set the agenda for all.

The border is “safer than ever”. So says DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano. Again and again.
Barack Obama has mocked those who say the border is unsafe: “Maybe they’ll need a moat. Maybe they’ll want alligators in the moat. They’ll never be satisfied.”
But for Texas ranchers in the Rio Grande Valley, the border has never been more dangerous. And they are stocking up with the hardware to do the job that the Feds refuse to do – AK47 rifles to defend their property and lives from border violence.
Barbed wire fencing doesn’t keep illegal aliens off the property anymore. One Starr County, TX rancher doesn’t have time to worry about the illegals these days. He now worries about the smugglers protecting their loads.
“I don’t think they would have any conscience of taking someone’s life,” the rancher says.
He saw that will to kill firsthand. A smuggler shot at him on his own land.
“One round was fired at me, and it missed my head by about two feet,” says the rancher.
He says there’s only way to react.
“Fire all the rounds you have, reload, and do it again,” says the rancher.
The local Armory Gun Store says business has been brisk for AK-47s and AR-15s from “countless” ranchers reporting break-ins and home invasions. But this rancher said no matter how many guns they buy, they will always be “outgunned” by the cartels.
I guess these ranchers didn’t get the memo from Obama and Big Sis that their border is “safer than ever”.
What will they want next….a moat?

The two issues are related, as this article in Forbes recognizes. Why? Because Europe is facing disintegration, maybe even collapse. This is strong language for an Establishment magazine.
About a year ago, I spoke at a conference in Europe that attracted a lot of very rich people from all over the continent, as well as a lot of people who manage money for high-net-worth individuals.
What made this conference remarkable was not the presentations, though they were generally quite interesting. The stunning part of the conference was learning – as part of casual conversation during breaks, meals, and other socializing time – how many rich people are planning for the eventual collapse of European society.
Not stagnation. Not gradual decline. Collapse.
As in riots, social disarray, plundering, and chaos. A non-trivial number of these people think the rioting in places such as Greece and England is just the tip of the iceberg, and they have plans – if bad things begin to happen – to escape to jurisdictions ranging from Australia to Costa Rica (several of them remarked that they no longer see the U.S. as a good long-run refuge).
When the rich finally start to worry about social collapse, a society is already. The author offers some excerpts from the Telegraph.
British ministers privately warned that the break-up of the euro, once almost unthinkable, is now increasingly plausible. Diplomats are preparing to help Britons abroad through a banking collapse and even riots arising from the debt crisis. The Treasury confirmed earlier this month that contingency planning for a collapse is now under way. …Recent Foreign and Commonwealth Office instructions to embassies and consulates request contingency planning for extreme scenarios including rioting and social unrest. …Diplomats have also been told to prepare to help tens of thousands of British citizens in eurozone countries with the consequences of a financial collapse that would leave them unable to access bank accounts or even withdraw cash. …Analysts at UBS, an investment bank earlier this year warned that the most extreme consequences of a break-up include risks to basic property rights and the threat of civil disorder. “When the unemployment consequences are factored in, it is virtually impossible to consider a break-up scenario without some serious social consequences,” UBS said.
He askes the right question: “But what about the rest of us? We don’t have property overseas and we don’t have private jets, so what’s our insurance policy?” He offers the correct answer: “Part of the answer is to have the ability to protect ourselves and our families. As explained here, firearms are the ultimate guarantor of civilization.”
Here’s a thought experiment to drive the point home. If Europe does collapse, which people do you think will be in better shape to preserve civilization, the well-armed Swiss or the disarmed Brits?
I hope we never have to find out, but I know which society has a better chance of surviving.

In many areas of life, activist groups have forced the system to remove rational judgement from the actual judiciary and impose sentences no matter what the actual circumstances are. I could quote other even more awful examples with even more devastating consequences to even more ‘innocent’ people. It would be interesting to see if this policy has actually decreased England’s violent crime rate or gun-use in crime or if instead, like gun-control does everywhere, just makes criminals out of ordinary civilized people while allowing violent thugs to act with greater and greater impunity knowing that their victims are less able to defend themselves and that judges will cut a break to actual thugs.

Victor Bowden: Shot the windscreen of a neighbour’s car after he was woken by loud music
A judge apologised to a pensioner after saying he had no choice but to jail him for five years after he opened fire on a neighbour’s empty car with a Second World War pistol.
Victor Bowden, 65, had been driven to desperate measures by a two-and-a-half year battle over her constant partying and loud music, a court heard.
In the early hours of the morning, he took the gun, a wartime souvenir that had belonged to his stepfather, and fired it through the windscreen of his young neighbour’s car.
Today, he is beginning a prison sentence after a judge said he regretted that he was required by law to impose the lengthy term for his “foolish” act – even though the neighbour herself had pleaded for leniency. Continue Reading →
Charles Adler on Canadian gun control

When you talk to even the most conservative Canadians about the right for private citizens to own guns you lose them. Not allowing guns in the hands of the actual public seems to be a dominant note in the Canadian psyche. This is unfortunate. Gun ownership is at the root of a free and democratic society. It has more to do with democracy than voting. Really. This isn’t about saving lives. Swimming pools kills over ten times the number of innocents than guns do in the United States as one example. Yet there is no demand for pool control. And pools do not save lives or preserve freedom.
So what are the (UK) laws with regards to guns?
Another example of how selective enforcement is the tool of modern totalitarianism. That governments pass harsh laws meant to lull the people into a false sense of security, by seeming to trade liberty for safety, then only enforcing the laws against the majority culture.
British people, if you are not angry yet, you really should be.

This is a strange story from the Bury Times and it raises an interesting point that we will come to later.
According to the report that you can read here, some enricher by the name of Hassan Hussain was found lying in the street with a gunshot wound to his foot and taken to hospital for treatment.
On being questioned by the police, Hussain informed them that he had been accosted by people wearing balaclavas, one of whom then shot him. The police quickly launched a major manhunt – they usually do when one of the enrichers has been attacked – and also reassured the local (more enrichers no doubt) community that they were treating the shooting seriously. How else are you supposed to treat a shooting?
However all was not what it seemed. Because forensic experts discovered that the gun that wounded the enricher had been fired at extremely close range and the truth was, that Hussain had deliberately shot himself in the foot – why not the head I asked myself? But it was his choice and he chose his foot to shoot – mores the pity.
Police then charged Hussain with wasting police time. A charge to which the enricher pleaded guilty to at the Bury Magistrates Court where he was sentenced to a paltry 18 weeks. By the time I finish typing this article, he will probably have been released for good behaviour.
Now there are actually a couple of points to be made here. Given that section 287 of the Criminal Justice act states that the minimum sentence for possessing illegal firearms are as follows:
- 3 years detention under section 91 of the Powers of Criminal Courts (Sentencing) Act 2000 where the offender is aged 16 or 17 at the time of the offence and under 18 at the date of conviction(s 29 (3) (b) and s 29 (6)).
- 5 years imprisonment for offenders aged 18 or over at the time of conviction. Section 29 (5) makes express provision for offenders aged 18 to 20 inclusive to receive the mandatory sentence, by requiring a reference to a sentence of imprisonment to include a sentence of detention in a young offender institute.
