Russian Police Detain Six Members of Banned Islamic Organization

Russian police detained six members of a banned Islamic group who were distributing extremist literature in mosques in Moscow and seized an arsenal of weapons including grenades and guns.
The group, the Party of Islamic Revival, was banned as a terrorist organization by the Supreme Court, the Interior Ministry said in a statement on its website today.
President Vladimir Putin vowed in August to combat Islamic extremists, who have been waging increasing attacks in Russia’s mainly Muslim southern regions. The violence spread also to Tatarstan, in central Russia, where militants wounded the top Muslim cleric and killed his deputy in July.

First one body appeared, floating in the waters of the Bay of Bengal, then another, and another, until those on board the little fishing boat that had gone to their rescue began to lose count.
Those bobbing lifeless among the waves had set out the night before, so desperate to escape the growing sectarian violence in Burma that they were prepared to risk boarding the dangerously overcrowded boat.
At least 130 had clambered aboard, but the boat foundered – whether it capsized because of the weight of bodies or because it struck rocks remains unclear.

Neighboring Asian states of Bangladesh and Myanmar (Burma) are, independently, trying to calm fears of further intercommunal violence between Buddhists and Muslims after serious incidents in recent months.
At least 19 Buddhist temples were razed to the ground in Bangladesh at the end of September, with at least 120 Buddhist homes and some businesses also attacked by Muslim mobs. The violence broke out in the town of Ramu town, Cox’s Bazaar, near Bangladesh’s border with Myanmar, and spread to five towns and several dozen villages.

Hundreds of Buddhist artifacts were looted from the temples, some of them a thousand years old.
In the state of Rakhine, Myanmar, nearly 3,000 houses, as well as 14 religious buildings and eight rice mills were destroyed in rioting across nine townships between October 21 and 27. At least 88 people were killed, and 129 hospitalized. Police also fired on Buddhist demonstrators – killing one man and injuring another – who had gathered in Kyauknimaw, Ramree Island, Rakhine, to demand extra security and the removal of Muslims from Buddhist-majority areas. One demonstrator told The Irrawaddy that it was “no longer possible [for Buddhists and Muslims] to stay together in the same community.”

Xinjiang militants in Syria, China sounds ‘high alert’

Beijing: China on Monday asked the international community to be on “high alert” and step up cooperation to fight against terrorism saying that Islamic militants from its troubled northwest province of Xinjiang, bordering PoK, were in Syria and battling government forces there.
Confirming reports that the militants from Xinjiang, where China is grappling with ethnic unrest between Muslim Uyghur population and Han Chinese settlers, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei said that the Xinjiang militants were “colluding” with international terrorist groups.
| “China opposes all forms of terrorism. The East Turkistan terrorist forces lead by the East Turkistan Islamic movement, (active in Xinjiang) have been colluding with international terrorist organisation,” Hong told a media briefing without directly naming al Qaeda. |
“It not only seriously undermines China’s national security but also a threat to other countries peace and stability. The international community should stay on high alert against them and step up cooperation the joint fight against all terrorist organisations including them,” he said.
Earlier state-run Global Times quoted unidentified Chinese anti-terrorism officials as saying that leaders from “East Turkestan” terror organisations sending their members to Syria to participate in their quest for jihad.
China backs the embattled Assad regime in Syria even though it established contacts with the rebel groups.

Yangon (AsiaNews/Agencies) – Interethnic clashes between majority Buddhists and minority Rohingya Muslims have caused the death of more than 100 people in Rakhine, a state in western Myanmar on the border with Bangladesh, this according to official government sources. The authorities are now concerned that the strife could harm the country’s reputation, undermining the peace process and democratisation. In view of this, President Thein Sein warned that the military and police would act to restore peace by force if necessary.
Rakhine State spokesman Win Myaing said 112 people died in clashes that began Sunday between Buddhist Rakhinese and the Muslim Rohingya, with 72 people reportedly injured, including 10 children. Earlier, the authorities had announced that almost 2,000 homes had been burnt down during the violence. As a result, they imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew.
Parts of the state have been under a state of emergency since 10 June. Matters could still get worse. Until yesterday, the official number of victims was low according to the media because of delays by local officials in making public the real figures.
In a strongly worded statement, Myanmar President’s Office warned that manipulators responsible for the recent sectarian clashes in Rakhine state would be exposed. Because of them, Burmese Muslims have cancelled celebrations for the Feast of Sacrifice (Eid al-Adha).

A wise man once said to me, that the most common substance in the universe is not stupidity, but irony. In that spirit I can’t help but notice that while Christianity and Judaism compete to see who is the bigger victim of Islam’s devoted, Buddhists are actually fighting back. And Buddhism really is the religion of peace. I guess they have a better memory of all the territory they lost than the Jews who lost much of the Arabian peninsula to Mohamed’s thugs and Christians who lost the ‘Vatican East’ in Constantinople. After all, when those 100 foot stone Buddhas were built in Afghanistan that the Taliban destroyed, it wasn’t a Muslim country then, was it?

At least 56 people have been killed and hundreds of homes torched since Sunday, as clashes spread in Burma’s Rakhine state, officials say.
Several were killed overnight as violence erupted despite a night-time curfew in at least two towns.
The latest clashes are the first serious outburst of violence since June when a state of emergency was declared in Rakhine after 90 people were killed.
But tensions remained high between ethnic Rakhine Buddhists and Muslims.
It is unclear what prompted the latest clashes. The Rakhine Buddhists and Muslims blame each other for the violence.
Clashes erupted in the Ratha Taung township late last night but this later spread to the Kyauk Taw township, where security forces opened fire, reports say.

Law enforcement agencies in the Russian Republic of Tatarstan are conducting a special operation to eliminate an unknown number of militants. At least two of the militants have already been killed, and an FSB operative died during the fight.
The operation, which began earlier in the day, turned deadly when militants opened fire on security officials. Two operatives were wounded, with one later succumbing to his injuries in a later hospital.
One of the militants eliminated during the fight was later discovered to be wearing a so-called suicide belt, which is an explosive device worn on the body. Bomb techs are working at the scene to diffuse it.
According to sources within the law enforcement agencies involved in the operation, the militants were planning to detonate explosives during the city’s celebrations of Kurban-Bairam, an important Muslim holiday. [Kurban-Bairan = Eid el Adha = this coming Friday ]
The building where the militants are hiding is located right next to a public school. Children who were attending classes there have been moved to rooms in the school’s basement, for their safety.

At least nine leaders of the insurgency – which is being waged across the region in an attempt to set up an Islamic caliphate – were said to have been killed and a bomb-making factory was discovered.
The National Anti-terrorism Committee (NAK) did not say over what period the raids were carried out in a statement released to Russian news agencies.
“A series of coordinated measures allowed for the suppression of the activity of a number of odious leaders, members of bandit groups and accomplices and allowed for a significant disruption of the bandits’ supply system,” the statement said.
If the figures are true, they are a reminder of the ongoing vitality of the insurgency on Russia’s southern perimeter, which grew out of separatists’ battles for the independence of Chechnya in the 1990s and early 2000s.
NAK said that among other strikes it had “neutralised” four leaders of the insurgency in the Russian republic of Kabardino-Balkariya who were allegedly responsible for killing a judge, two Federal Security Service operatives and numerous policemen.

President Vladimir Putin has spoken out against the wearing of headscarves in Russian schools in his first public comment on a potentially explosive issue.
Putin’s statement Thursday follows a recent incident in southern Russia where a school principal forbade girls from Muslim families from wearing headscarves at school. Their parents protested the move and the principal said she was threatened, according to The Associated Press.
Asked to comment on the issue, Putin signaled his opposition to headscarves at schools, saying that Russia is a secular state and must create equal conditions for all its citizens.
“We must always treat the religious feelings of people with great respect. That must be shown in the state’s activities, in the nuances, in everything,” Putin told supporters, quoted by the Interfax news agency.
“Secondly we have a secular state and we must proceed from this basis,” he added, after being asked for his view on the case of a school in southern Russia that banned girls from wearing the Islamic headscarf.
