September 12, 2017

Munich (dpa/lby) – In the first six months of the year 2017, almost 50 percent more rapes were reported than in the same period of the previous year. There is a total of 685 cases in the police statistics, a plus of 48 percent. What is particularly noteable is that the number of cases alleged to migrants rose by 91 percent to 126, said Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) in front of cabinet on Tuesday. The number of migrants in all sexual offenses were 18 percent (2016: 14 percent).

The reasons for this increase were still unclear. «Our police experts are working on a detailed analysis», Herrmann said. Sexual offenses were to be fought more targetedly by all means, also in the asylum seeker accommodations. «Apart from an increased presence of police, there need to be targeted prevention measures.» Herrmann demanded that, additionally to fingerprints, also DNA samples should be taken at the registration of refugees.

Apart from the number of rapes, the number of crimes sunk across Bavarai. After adjusting the number of offenses against the aliens law – particularly illegal crossing of the border by refugees – the statisticians counted 282,000 offenses – roughly 20 500 less than in the same period of the previous year. The number of burglaries went down 14, the number of thefts 11 percent.
