U.S.: Nigerian Man Charged In Attempted Aircraft Bombing

The U.S. Justice Department charged Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab Dec. 26 with trying to set off an explosive device on an aircraft headed for Detroit on Christmas Day, Bloomberg reported. Abdulmutallab, 23, a Nigerian citizen, allegedly tried to bomb the aircraft using a device containing the explosive pentaerythritol. He told FBI agents he had trained with an al Qaeda leader, ABC reported. He also told investigators the explosive device was sewn into his underwear to escape detection.
