Guardian… Officers from the North West Counter Terrorism Unit detained the men earlier this week

Four men were charged with terrorism offences following counter-terror raids, police said tonight.

Officers from the North West Counter Terrorism Unit detained the men earlier this week in what was described as a “low key operation”.

Israr Malik, 21, of Bowdon Avenue, Fallowfield, is charged with intending to commit acts of terrorism, namely violent jihad, between June 2008 and November 17 this year.

Matthew Newton, 27, of Rydal Walk, Stalybridge, Munir Farooqi, 52, of Victoria Terrace, Longsight, and Haris Farooqi, 26, of Stockport Road, Levenshulme, are accused of intending to assist others to commit acts of terrorism, namely violent jihad, between October 2008 and November 17 this year.

All four are due to appear at City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London tomorrow.

A 62-year-old man from Deane, Bolton, understood to be a Muslim cleric, was released without charge.

  1. Ethan,

    Interesting article.

The UK based points system has been styled on the Australian system, which we’ve been running for quite a few years. It has some benefits in that it shifts the profile of immigrant; a greater percentage of useful migrants (non racially based selection ) and a lesser percentage of useless fodder (again non racially based).

Unfortunately, education exports become very tempting. We’ve had quite a few scandals, over the years, of this sort of fraudulent student visa. Such a visa being a near certain citizenship qualification down the track. No doubt the UK will go through the same learning curve.

The theory of the sytem isn’t bad: non racial selection of immigrants based on what the potential immigrant has to offer Australia. Unlike the UK, where you’ve allowed groups noted for their commitment to poverty and stupidity to wash ashore unfettered, we’ve gone for east asian Bhuddists or Indian IT types rather than your lot of challenged immigrants from the east.

I really hope it all ends well for the UK.
