A former US Navy Seal sniper has been shot dead at a shooting range in Texas, according to reports.
Chris Kyle, who also wrote the best-selling book, American Sniper, was killed alongside another man, 35-year-old Chad Littlefield.
It is believed the 38-year-old had been helping a soldier who was recovering from post-traumatic stress disorder.
Local newspapers have quoted Erath County Sheriff Tommy Bryant who said Mr Kyle and Mr Littlefield were found dead on Saturday afternoon at Rough Creek Lodge’s shooting range, which is about an hour from Fort Worth.
The Star-Telegram reported that witnesses told police a gunman opened fire on the men, then fled in a truck belonging to one of the victims.
A 25-year-old suspect, identified as Eddie Ray Routh, was arrested, according to Texas Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Lonny Haschel.

“Consider taking a certified safety course in handling a firearm so you can defend yourself until we get there. You have a duty to protect yourself and your family. We’re partners now. Can I count on you?” he asks.

The polemic has now moved so far to the left, even in the USA, that they now publish reports like this. How tragic. When the US was built on a foundation of distrust of government, individual freedoms and a certainty that the tendency of governments is intrusion into the lives of the individual. Sadly, West point is proving the necessity for the very thing it seeks to suffocate in this report. I would hope even the reasonable who did not before agree with the skeptics on government would now realize that the center is now so far to the statist totalitarian left that it is nearly indistinguishable from the totalitarian right. Granted, not in actions. But the root philosophy which brings about the destruction of real liberties and reverses the priority from the individual to the state seems firmly in place now.

A West Point think tank has issued a paper warning America about “far right” groups such as the “anti-federalist” movement, which supports “civil activism, individual freedoms and self-government.”
The report issued this week by the Combating Terrorism Center at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., is titled “Challengers from the Sidelines: Understanding America’s Violent Far-Right.”
The center — part of the institution where men and women are molded into Army officers — posted the report Tuesday. It lumps limited government activists with three movements it identifies as “a racist/white supremacy movement, an anti-federalist movement and a fundamentalist movement.”
The West Point center typically focuses reports on al Qaeda and other Islamic extremists attempting to gain power in Asia, the Middle East and Africa through violence.
But its latest study turns inward and paints a broad brush of people it considers “far right.”
It says anti-federalists “espouse strong convictions regarding the federal government, believing it to be corrupt and tyrannical, with a natural tendency to intrude on individuals’ civil and constitutional rights. Finally, they support civil activism, individual freedoms, and self government. Extremists in the anti-federalist movement direct most their violence against the federal government and its proxies in law enforcement.”

(Reuters) – Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott has a message for New York gun owners: Come to Texas, and bring your guns with you.
“Texas is better than New York, and New York just gave us another excuse to say that,” Abbott, a Republican, said on Thursday, after ads extolling Texas appeared on several media websites.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, signed sweeping gun-control legislation earlier this week expanding the state’s ban on assault weapons and putting limits on ammunition capacity in the wake of last month’s school shootings in Connecticut.
Abbott, a possible candidate for governor of Texas in next year’s election, used campaign money to buy ads on websites of news organizations in New York City and Albany.

In a burglary of a White Plains, New York home, burglars went straight for the gun safe. Police are investigating whether the publication of names and addresses of gun permit holders by the newspaper played any part in the crime.
Around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, at least two burglars broke into the White Plains home. The owner of the home, a man in his 70s, was not at home at the time.
Newsday reports the burglars gained entrance to the house through a second story window. There was glass in the yard and a ladder leading up to the second floor. It was reported the burglars went straight for the safe that contained legally registered weapons but they abandoned the theft when they could not get the safe open. One person has been taken into custody.
As Digital Journal reported, on Dec. 23, 2012, nine days after the Sandy Hook shooting, The Journal News, based in the lower Hudson Valley, published a map showing the names and addresses of persons who had legal gun permits in Westchester and Rockland Counties. An attempt to include Putnam County was foiled after that county refused to provide the information to the newspaper.
