One Reply to “Ezra on the current state of the ‘Idle no More’ occupy schtick going on in Ottawa”
Hello there…
I am watching with amusement at what are, essentially, threats of terrorism being issued by the various Indian bands and their leaders across Canada, including the Onion Lake band of Saskatchewan.
The Onion Lake Band and their administrators are now seeing fit to threaten to bring Canada, economically, to its knees through a course of terrorist actions, through sabotage and through road, rail line and border crossing blockades. This is a clearly defined example of terrorism.
In fact Chief Wallace Fox, of the Onion Lake Band, has issued threats like “if we have to shut down the economy (Canada’s) then we will, cause nobody’s going to stop the Idle No More movement”.
It is obvious that Chief Wallace Fox speaks not only the Onion Lake Band, but for the entirety of the Assembly of First Nations.
Unfortunately, Chief Wallace Fox has, like any of the blustering blowhards and windbags, like any schoolyard bully, badly underestimated the effects of his proposed acts of terrorism.
There is however a glaring omission with respect to the Assembly of First Nations, the Onion Lake Band and the other Indian’s issuance of threats and that is the element of reciprocity.
In causing damage to the the national and local economies of both Canada and various cities across this nation, the friction that would result from these actions would not only be considerable but demand reciprocal action from both local residents and Canadians generally.
Let us deal with hypothetical reciprocal actions that could, and most likely would, be conducted by local residents who watched their personal finances and local economies ravaged by militant/terrorist Indians engaged in acts of terrorism disguised as “political activism”.
Let us look at the Onion Lake Indian Band of Saskatchewan.
This Band, owner of Onion Lake Energy, is arguably one of the richest bands in North America, sitting on hundreds of million, in fact, billions, of dollars in revenues from heavy oil and gas revenues. Again, a fact, much like Chief “Needsnoreciepts” and her squandering of millions of dollars, that Indians are not eager to talk about.
This Band, as illustrated by the actions and statements made by its Chief Wallace Fox, intends to do grave and far reaching harm to the citizens of Canada, both locally and nationally. Unfortunately what Chief Fox has failed to consider, as previously mentioned, is that there is a flip side to that coin.
Broadly speaking, Canadians have grown tired tired of Indian threats and criminality and the impact the same are having on local areas, local economies and Canada in general. They are tired of the coddling of Canada’s Indians to the point where outrageous criminal acts are ignored. Canadians are tired of the Gustafson Lakes, the Ipperwashes, the Caledonia’s, the Burnt Churches, the Oka’s and this latest fiasco and fraud……the “Idle No More Movement”. As such, it can be said with reasonable levels of quantification, that Indians have worn out their welcome and generally, the patience and tolerance of those Canadians who previously supported them. And to my point, that lack of support, in the face of this latest Indian criminality and terrorist aggression and threats, could quickly turn to an atmosphere of “tit for tat”………an atmosphere that would cause grievous harm to the Indians.
Case in point.
I have worked closely, on and off, for over 35 years in the oil and gas industry in Alberta and British Columbia. I have watched as federal and provincial regulations have changed with the times, a change for the better, which has forced the oil and gas industry to clean up its act with respect to both its operation and its response to accidents and spills. In fact, there is now a “zero-tolerance” policy in place for accidents and spills and the regulatory bodies that deal with accidents and spills require clean-ups that are so comprehensive and detailed the costs can potentially decimate an oil company.
One example of the horrendous effects of a spill can be found recently in the Rainbow Pipeline / Plains Energy spill two years ago in the Red Earth Creek, Alberta area.
One of the remote sections of that pipeline burst and pumped oil for a day or two, the result was spill that amounted to a small lake. The clean-up costs of that one small spill ran into the hundreds of millions of dollars.
In cleaning up the spill the costs associated range from the cost to dispose of contaminated soil, to disposal of contaminated fluid, to putative government fines, to the use of heavy equipment, to the manpower (if you can get it), to the trucking, all of which can break a company….here is a basic list.
Soil disposal at a federal/provincially regulated site: 50.00 to 450.00 per metric tonne.
Trucking for an end-dump to transport contaminated soil: 185 to 260.00 dollars per hour.
Contaminated fluid disposal: 200 m3 for fluid with no solids, up to 450 m3 for fluid with solids.
Trucking for fluid disposal:Tandem/Tridem Tanker 225.00 per hour.
D6 Cat Bulldozer: 185 to 250.00 per hour
To estimate, a small spill in the area of 100 cubic metres of oil can cost in excess of a million dollars to clean up. A large spill of 50,000 to 500,000 cubic metres, if spilled into a water course like a lake or river can cost, not including government fines and punitive litigation from arising from local resident recouping losses from the spill, well in excess of 100 million dollars.
So, now…….dealing in the hypothetical, let us look at the potential for effective backlash against an Indian Band like the Onion Lake Band, that seeks to decimate the local and national economy of Canada.
Oilfields are very vulnerable places from a strategic and tactical point of view. Many are located in either remote or rural areas.
Residents who have suffered loss at the hands of Indians like Chief Wallace Fox and the Onion Lake Band may well decide that enough is enough and attack the Band where it will hurt the most……their oilfield infrastructure.
In the middle of the night a few valves on a pipeline. They are opened just enough to start a massive leak, but not opened enough to cause a warning to pipeline operators that would result from line pressure drop. The oil pumps out at a rate of 200 to 1000 barrels per hour.
In the middle of the night a few valves are opened on storage tanks and as there is no warning, save a hi-level alarm on some tanks, the loss of a hundred to 500 cubic metres into the surrounding area goes unnoticed until morning and the damage is done.
A person familiar with the local area and or using a GPS system like Patch-Point could conceivably open 50 valves in one night with stunning and catastrophic results.
This above doesn’t even begin to include attacks on the downstream production side of the Onion Lake Energy operation.
If you want an example of how effective oil-field sabotage can be look no further than the actions of Alberta’s own Wiebo Ludwig. Ludwig, through a couple of bombings, virtually stopped Encana’s production operations. And Wiebo was only one man, imagine what a couple of dozen local residents, using the principals of “leaderless resistance” could do.
As I said before, the cost of this backlash could run into the hundreds of millions of dollars and would or could continue for years.
There are those who would say the response to secure the oilfields would include the RCMP and the military and to that one only has to consider that the Onion Lake Band started terrorist actions and then petitions the government for protection……the response to the cries and pleas of the Onion Lake Band for help would be utter silence.
Perhaps the Onion Lake Band would use their own people or private security to protect the fields, again, this would backfire as a result of further actions taken by local residents. Allow me to explain.
All of the oil produced by the wells located on the Onion Lake reserve is either pipe-lined or trucked (Askiy Apoy Hauling) to larger refineries owned by Canadian Natural (CNRL), Murphy Oil, Baytex Energy or Husky Energy. Once there, for a fee, the Onion Lake Energy oil is purchased, refined and shipped to market.
To simply circumvent the Onion Lake Indian Band and Onion Lake Energy’s placement of massive amounts of security in their oilfields all that would be required is for local residents to attack and sabotage the oil wells and infield infrastructure of the the downstream recipients of Onion Lakes oil…..recipients like Baytex, Husky, Murphy and CNRL.
The result would be that Onion Lake oil would be refused by those refiners like Murphy and Husky and they would have no place to sell their oil. The Onion Lake Energy operation would grind to a halt and the money flow would stop.
The effect of a backlash of this nature would be in the hundreds of millions of dollars and would bankrupt the Onion Lake Band.
The cost of spill clean-up (s) would be in the hundreds of millions.
The cost of servicing the shut-in oil wells to get them restarted after emergency shut down, in the hundreds of millions.
The cost of attacks on the equipment owned by Askiy Apoy Hauling, in the tens of millions.
The loss of revenue to the band…..essentially life would grind to a halt and Onion Lake Band would be bankrupt.
Onion Lake Indians would be welcome in no other areas save their own reserves. Travel outside their reserves would be potentially lethal. The vast majority of Canadians would say they would have reaped a well deserved crop from the terrorism and criminality they had sown
Of course, in response to all of this, arguably, well deserved reciprocal action, malevolent provocateurs like Chief Wallace Fox, Pam Palmater and Chief Spence would be to declare war on Canada.
To that I say this………let Pam Palmater, Theresa Spence and Wallace Fox start a war……..there are many in Canada who, having suffered enough at the hands of the self entitled Indians, would support a government solution that would speak of finality, an unmistakable sense of permanence and withering brute force.
And then CBC could make a movie about that solution…..they could call it…….
“A Thousand Wounded Knees”……
…and I, over a cool soda pop and bag of Cheezies, would laugh and laugh and laugh and laugh………
In closing, perhaps the blowhards and windbags like Spence, Pam Palmater and Wallace Fox should keep their big mouths shut……because anger and retribution is a two way street……and if they hadn’t noticed….Whitey has refined retribution to an art form.
