Tariq Ali, a well known political activist who identifies as British, has been invited to speak at the University of St. Thomas in the Canadian Atlantic province of New Brunswick.
Ali claims to have written 50 books on history.
Here are a couple of Ali’s on the record statements:
in May 2016 Mr. Ali is reported as having stated that “…the annihilation of Israel would greatly benefit both Palestinians and Israelis…” and that “…antisemitism is a result of the creation of a Jewish state, and once Israel is wiped off the map, antisemitism will disappear
University of London Panel Calls for Annihilation of Israel as Solution to Global Antisemitism
- on October 7, 2023, the very day of the murderous Hamas pogrom against Israel that resulted in largest one-day death toll of Jews since the Holocaust, Mr. Ali published an essay which makes clear his support for Hamas and the concept of resistance “by any means necessary”. Hamas has been a designated terrorist entity under Canadian law since 2002. The phrase “by any means necessary” is simply code justifying the unspeakable atrocities committed by Hamas on October 7th – please also see this link.
- Accordingly, and with respect, I fail to see how Mr. Ali speaking on campus achieves what you describe as the University’s “…unique role in fostering informed debate and discussion offering differing perspectives.”
A “perspective” from an outspoken supporter of a recognized terrorist entity under Canadian law calling for the annihilation of Israel and suggesting that antisemitism has somehow only existed since the creation of the State of Israel in 1948 will only serve to inflame and divide, rather than to educate and inform. The result will be to make the St. Thomas campus (as well as the UNB campus) an unsafe and unwelcoming space for Jewish students, staff, and faculty and many other people, and may also impact the Fredericton Jewish community at large.
Accordingly, we are deeply disappointed that the lecture will proceed. That said, we expect that the University and the AHRC will put vigorous safeguards in place to ensure the safety of those who may attend the lecture and question Mr. Ali, as well as mechanisms to monitor antisemitism on campus after the lecture. Based on my personal experience at the Dr. Yossi Olmert lecture at STU in March 2009, as well as at innumerable events across Atlantic Canada since that time, pro-Israel speakers consistently face unchecked (and often extreme) hostility and aggression from anti-Israel activists when expressing their opinion on the Israel-Palestinian conflict – which is entirely contrary to the notion of academic freedoms and informed debate and discussion we aspire to.

In academe right now we’re waaayyy past anything that looks like educating and informing.
For the islamo-commie activists on the left-hand path, it’s ALL about inflaming, dividing, and destroying. At the same time they’re seducing the passive masses into a satanic, killer cult. The transgressive naughtiness of sexual deviance has morphed into an inversion of every norm that’s been so rigidly inflicted on this generation. From delicacy around fat-shaming, they’ve gone straight to “global intifada”, the “shaking off” of all restraints of life-affirming society.
The Bible tells us that G-d saw the world He had created had become so polluted with violence, life itself had to be wiped out. “HAMAS” is the Biblical term for that utter, nihilistic extreme incompatible with life.
So shake hands with the Devil. That’s what University presidents of my two alma maters, along with peak “humanitarians” like the Red Cross, the Pope, and the Sec. General of the UN have been wriggling around. They’re crafty: contextualizing to justify the “shaking off” of all restraints on the Evil Inclination. Intifada. They contaminate the innocent who will fall prey to the death cult.
Given this extremity, dainty defense of free speech is just hot air. Those who throw bouquets of facts and logic at the baying wolf pack are whining to score points. Time to crawl out of the poison Ivy and STFU. Figure out a constructive role for yourself in this existential war.
Most of the observors are there for the show, the wicked entertainment. They don’t realize that their own character is becoming debased by this experience. That makes them vulnerable to the cult chanting heinous curses that destroy the soul.
Things are going to get crazy over the summer and stay that way for years
Hard to believe that some people on our side are still exchanging spit with this lot. All that’s happened since 10/7, all dialogue sabotaged, and they still don’t get it. Or they don’t want to.
They’re just giving the enemy a gigantic platform to use for their brainwashing mission. They’re coming at us from so many directions, they’re gathering too many souls.
The superannuated hippies are reliving their salad days, the stories they told their grandchildren resonate. Stories of valor. Like spitting on vets while wearing Che Guevara T-shirts.
Unless the Lord gets just too disgusted. No more Flood, maybe Nuclear Winter.
I’m all for civil debate.
Although I do not know Tarig Ali, or much about what he writes or talks about, I think him speaking at a Canadian public institution fits with those institutions being bastions of freedom to do so, on their platform.
My only wish is that these freedoms extended equally to everyone throughout the country. Sadly that is not the case.
Francis Widdownson, former Mount Royal (Calgary) University professor has been on the hot seat in the study and broadcasting of her thoughts concerning indigenous people in this country. She has faced death threats and everything related!
Her book ” Disrobing the Aboriginal Industry” has brought her disdain unbecoming of a free and democratic country, particularly in this case, its funded publicly institutions who have banned her speaking.
I may or may not agree with any given speaker on any given matter, but I’ll never stop speaking to the disconnect allowing some parties to spew there ideas hate, warts, hurt and all, while other face slammed doors. It’s dangerous!
Fully agree.
We are pro freedom of speech here. But the reality is that our basically Republic form of nation state has been replaced with a dialectic one, where only approved narratives get academic or media approval or even air time.
We do not wish to shut anyone down. But we do wish to expose agendas. Doubly so when the speaker in question is out there unopposed and any attempt to have a non-narrative speaker is crushed before the doors open.
Try and get a pro life speaker on campus and see how that goes for example.
Dangerous delusions inhibit self-defense.
