From a dog park, Vancouver Canada: A rent rant

People who can pay rent must pay rent. Tenants made a deal with the landlord. The latter would provide the tenant with a place to live and whatever comes with it, heat when its cold, power, water and so on.

The following flyer was found in a dog park in Vancouver Canada:

At the time they make the deal, tenants agree to pay an amount they felt was fair for what they get. If they choose not to pay it now out of some kind of misguided spite, or more likely, opportunism disguised as communist ‘altruism’, it just means they are selfish bastards with no character whatsoever, and no one should ever trust a word they say again.

People will keep records. And anyone who chooses not to pay when they can pay, might find it difficult in the future to hold any kind of position of trust, rent an apartment, float a loan, get a mortgage or even a credit card.

I hope people think before they refuse to pay rent. This crisis will end. Governments will allow evictions again. Leases might be harder to come by than they think, if it’s known that they didn’t pay rent when they could have.

People who truly cannot pay rent because of Covid-19, or more accurately, due to government measures to combat Covid-19, can get support from the government and make arrangements with landlords. It will be known who they are. And they should not be punished for the policies of the government.

But for those who can pay rent, think for a few minutes about what your landlord will have to do if he can’t make his mortgage, property taxes, utilities, water power, repairs and so on. Do you want to live in buildings like the gang in A Clockwork Orange? Because that is what you will get if this thing lasts a few months and you don’t pay rent. A slum.

  1. I read somewhere yesterday that 25% of tenants didn’t pay this month’s rent.

What’s yours is mine, and what’s mine is my own. (Including your property.)

    Well said Eeyore.

  2. Dear Vlad/ Eeyore- I am a long time reader of your blog and thank you from the bottom of my heart for posting this article. Here in the People’s Republic of New York, Comrade Governor Cuomo has decreed that people do not have to pay their rent for 90 days, nor can there be any evictions. The courts are closed as well so landlords cannot even sue to protect their Constitutional rights!
Furthermore, there are so called “conservatives” on some right wing blogs that I look at who are also advocating that tenants not pay their rent as part of some other full blown Communist scheme to deprive landlords of THEIR livelihoods and civil rights.
I am a retiree and a landlord with one small property. I worked hard to pay off the mortgage and I still pay all the taxes which are substantial. My tenant’s rent barely covers my expenses with a very small profit on top of that. I count on that income every month and cannot afford to do without it!
I am not a slumlord. I take care of that house better than my own. The minute there is any problem I have it fixed. My tenants are never without heat, hot water, electricity, a nice yard and a roof over their heads. Their rent is more than fair and because of this Chi Com Flu crisis, I could be getting twice as much as I am now charging from people who are desperate to get out of NYC.
It is positively CRIMINAL the way that Government is violating our most basic, God given civil rights and taking away our freedom and liberty because of a virus that is no worse than any other flu.
Funny how the Corona Hoax has given the Left/ Dem/ Commies everything they ever dreamed of, all without firing a shot.

    • #1: Keep up a good relationship with your tenants. Make sure you have the names of all residents 18 years of age or older on the lease document and that you have verified their identity. In whatever way your locale allows, assure that utilities are not in your name. Review your insurance policy to get an idea of what potential damages may be covered. Use a PO Box for all correspondence. Set aside money to hire an attorney with experience should you need legal help.

You or preferably your attorney files the paperwork to evict and the court acts on it when back in session. You keep your property in good shape so that it will be easier to rent out once the marshal escorts the current tenant out. From my experience with three evictions in California, the court will rule that the tenants’ debts are cancelled if the tenants whose names are on the lease leave. See #1.

Be happy if the tenant leaves the walls and windows intact. Let the marshal do his thing if the tenant doesn’t leave because the tenant may be armed. See #1.

At this point, you can empathize with the mom-and-pop who have the misfortune of owning a liquor store during a riot. The people organizing rent strikes have made no secret of their names. I wonder if property owners who are also attorneys (and possibly insurance companies themselves) will look for whoever is involved that has pockets to pay.

I am not professionally certified to provide advice and these are just my musings aloud, which may or may no be relevant to your situation. I pay someone with more experience than I have to handle evictions. You see, if a “rent riot” is successful, then more is yet to come.

  3. These leftists think it’s still 1820 and we’re still fighting the draconian labor laws that existed at that horrible time in history and the mines are still full of dirty-faced little British children getting caught dreadfully in the gears of the machine as the wicked top-hatted factory owner beats them and gives them no food and rapes their poor suffering mothers… Ah, the good old days. They think they’re all missing a leg from the Peninsular War and the Land Enclosures are still turning their families out into the rain, and My God!, how they hate the rich right-wing bastards who did it to them… Arr… Stand up and fight, ye scurvy bastards!!! Fight! Fight! Fight!

    • You are right and they ignore the history that proves their policies bring about the very thing they claim to be fighting against.

      • I figure the actual religion of “Socialism” was born at about that time and there is no need for proof or evidence once something has become religious and is now a matter of faith. The leftist can even know he is wrong about an issue but it doesn’t matter because his heart is so in the right place and he means so darn well for his beloved “humanity” that the details aren’t that important at the end of the day.

Socialists believe that “capitalism” is the greatest possible evil because it is entirely powered by “greed” in their opinion and therefore is always headed in the wrong direction no matter what the circumstances. Socialists believe that only a benevolent government holding the Peoples’ welfare uppermost can run the affairs of state and that places like the United States are bastions of greed and evil – hucksters trying to get rich quick. There is no getting through to them. They refuse to listen…

        • It is a religion and given the number of people it murdered in the 20th Century it demands masive human sacrifice almost constantly. Look at how the leftist women in the west are gleefully murdering their children in the name of Marx.

    • exactly why landlord needs to check in with an attorney.
by accepting a lower rent for the month, he may have created a new rental agreement at a lower rent – he’s banking on the tenant not knowing that
