Update on newest bio-threat out of China

Quebec health officials monitoring 5 people for possible cases of coronavirus

MONTREAL — Six people in Quebec who had recently travelled to China have displayed symptoms of a respiratory virus, a spokesperson for the provincial health ministry said on Wednesday.

It is not yet clear if they are suffering from another type of respiratory virus or Wuhan coronavirus, the spokesperson added. Five of them are being monitored in hospitals in Montreal and Quebec City as a precautionary measure. The ministry did not say which hospitals. A sixth has tested negative for the virus and has been discharged from the hospital.

The announcement came after the health ministry announced it was on watch for the virus and was taking pre-emptive measures to warn doctors, nurses and other health officials. […]

At airports, provincial health officials are monitoring incoming travelers from China and Thailand — those countries are considered “under surveillance” according to a spokesperson for the health minister.

(No sign of stopping flights from China though.)

‘It feels like the end of the world’: THIRD Chinese city is put in lockdown as experts warn deadly coronavirus outbreak is MUTATING – as Singapore becomes the eighth country to confirm case

A third city in China is going into lockdown as officials battle to stop the spread of the deadly new coronavirus that has killed 17, left hundreds seriously ill and potentially infected thousands.

Major Chinese New Year events in Beijing have been cancelled, authorities in Ezhou have shut down train stations, and Huanggang has announced it will suspend public buses and trains as well as ordering cinemas and internet cafes to close their doors.

The development comes as Wuhan – the city at the centre of the outbreak – remains in lockdown, with all flights in and out cancelled, residents banned from leaving and scenes of chaos as desperate families fight for food supplies.

Official figures show almost 600 patients have been struck down by the disease – but scientists yesterday warned as many as 10,000 people could have been infected in Wuhan alone. Experts said they couldn’t rule out the SARS-like virus already being in the UK. Others have said no virus has spread this far this quickly since SARS in 2003.

Chinese officials are disinfecting whole streets and parks with clouds of gas and chilling footage has emerged of roadside quarantine tents, hastily erected to isolate suspected cases.  One resident told the BBC the atmosphere in the city felt like ‘the end of the world’.

Something is very wrong here. There are three items in a post from yesterday that are linked here which may add clarity.

I wonder if the Chinese helped Trudeau get elected along with Iran and Obama’s cadre of Frankfurt School leftists? Or if the woman who stole this virus from a Canadian lab was not vetted properly for any special reason.

Also it might be a good time to point out the bio-research facility in Varennes Quebec that according to its staff photo, was ALL religious muslims except for a couple of people, and one or two of which is in jail for planning to attack trains and other targets in Canada and the US in various ways.

Speaking of which, keep a close eye on the train derailment story out of Toronto yesterday as well. There are sources that suggest this was not an accident.

UPDATE: Their is some discussion about this photo. A version has been sent in that is not cropped, and shows this as taken under a doorway where it is written:

Institut National de la recherche scientifique

The difficulty is that the photo immediately below may not be an accurate representation of the staff. But it was pulled from the company website at the time the initial arrest was made, and the company sent in an email demanding it be pulled as they owned the  CR on the photo. Which at least suggests that it was indeed the company webpage header as we saw it at the time. I have the whole page backed up on a separate drive in case it matters.

  1. With that many possible people infected, wouldn’t one be bound to develop antibodies to fight the virus? Trying to think positively….

    • Depends how skilled the weapons makers are I guess.

If they understand how people make antibodies then I suppose they can make sure that doesn’t happen. I think its time to call a friend who is a Ph.D in biology.

  2. The Daily Mail article has two details that beg for clarification: the virus is airborne and wearing masks is protective.
Droplet-borne spread is the norm for human illnesses. Those masks people are wearing are designed to prevent the person from spreading droplets, not the other way around. You need to wear a protective mask if you want to reduce the chance of being infected.

  3. This explosion in infections tells me the Chicoms were downplaying from the start and have now lost control.

    • Exactly. Two people were isolated weeks ago. Pneumatic plague.
Once they figure out exactly what they are dealing with (methinks they know) it takes three months to come up with a antidote……….

      • I first read about the two people from the Chinese Province of Inner Mongolia with pneumonic plague in early November. They were being treated in Beijing’s Chaoyang District. The authorities implemented control measures.

  4. The Chinese government is acting like this is a major crisis with a lot more cases then reported. Alternative explanation China is reacting to an accidental release of a bio weapon.

At this point in time we don’t know which is correct or if it is a combination of all both explanations.

7 Chinese cities, around 23 million people, effectively under quarantine
Multiple cases across the world – from Scotland to Singapore and USA
634 Infected (according to Chinese officials)
18 Dead (following 1st death outside Wuhan)

“Make no mistake: This is an emergency in China,” Tedros said. “But it has not yet become a global health emergency. It may yet become one.”

An unconfirmed source claiming to be in Wuhan claimed that by sunrise this morning, there were 5 000 infected and over 150 dead inside that city alone.

This page gives a timeframe for efforts to learn enough about the virus to work on a strategy for care and prevention. The page mentions people getting better after having fallen ill. The cases outside the PRC–I feel–will provide a perspective on whether this probable epidemic is being used as a means to control and cordon off Wuhan and the other quarantined cities. That CDC mentions that the coronoviruses SARS and MERS are spread by respiratory droplets. What is China gaining by the airport box drama and the effective cancellation of Chinese New Year celebrations, especially as they relate to family unity?

This gentleman presented on Sunday, specimens were obtained, and the results were learned on Monday [19th]. And today, Tuesday [20th], our priority is doing contact investigation and tracing.
when this gentleman came to Seattle?
Our best understanding is on the 15th of January. .
on the 19th. We were in communication with the CDC Emergency Operations Center coordinating specimens that were shipped overnight and had the results the following day, incredibly fast.
the precautions for this patient are standard isolation precautions. This is something many hospitals know how to do and we’re grateful that in this region in Washington state they were quite prepared for this contingency. So this is not a situation like the Dallas one.
Just to add that we are grateful that the patient is doing well and that is clinically not ill and he has been so cooperative.
the gentleman is right now very healthy. I think that it would be characterized that he is getting supportive care and monitoring.

out of “an abundance of caution,” the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would notify passengers on his flight.
The primary focus, however, is trying to contact other patients at the clinic the man visited on Sunday, a hospital official said. He reported then that he was sick and concerned about the prospect of a coronavirus infection.
They said they planned to remain in daily contact with those people to monitor any possible symptoms but have not asked them to isolate themselves, under the assumption that this variation of coronavirus, which researchers are only beginning to understand, operates like other versions that transmit only once someone becomes symptomatic.
Officials believe that the virus is transmitted through the air by coughing and sneezing, by close personal contact such as touching an infected person, and from touching a surface with the virus on it before touching the mouth, nose or eyes.

In Washington State, officials declined to discuss additional details about the patient or the specifics of his travel, saying they would publicly disclose them only if they had trouble making contact with people who might be at risk.
After the first American patient visited a clinic on Sunday, a few days after returning from China, doctors asked him to stay home and isolated as they worked with the C.D.C. to test whether he had been infected by the new coronavirus.
After confirming the illness, officials later coordinated with emergency medical technicians to bring the man to Providence Regional Medical Center in the city of Everett, where a containment unit had been built during the most recent Ebola outbreaks, said Dr. Jay Cook, the hospital’s chief medical officer. The unit has a negative airflow to filter any air coming out of the room, and an adjacent room for workers to put on protective equipment if needed.
Dr. Cook said the patient was doing well under treatment by a team of caregivers that volunteered to handle patients who have illnesses of particular concern or that may be highly contagious. He said he was hopeful the patient could be discharged in the near future.
