  1. It was just on for a second but one police officer seemed to have about 6 spar magazines for a submachine gun on his belt. You carry that kind of ammo when you are expecting a hard battle.

    • Richard, for what it’s worth, police and other law enforcement often try to appear as “combat-ready” as possible when facing crowds. Those magazines were likely empty, serving as nothing more than props to psych-out the crowd.
      My father in the US was deployed with the National Guard to control a civil rights protest decades ago. He said the soldiers were sent out with rifles and spare mags & ammo cans, none of which had a single bullet in them. But the sight of those rows of men in fatigues, carrying rifles and other apparently functional weapons, was enough to keep the crowd civilized.
      This doesn’t make the Paris police violence okay, I’m just commenting on that one detail.
