    • FBI detains 5 in connection to Chelsea bombing

      Update from the NYPD: About an hour ago, the FBI took several individuals into custody on the Belt Parkway in the area underneath the Verrazano Bridge, with a possible connection to the bombing last night in Chelsea

      FBI agents arrested five men who may be connected to Saturday’s bombing in Chelsea after stopping their car in Brooklyn, sources said.

      The men were heading over the Verrazano Bridge from Staten Island when they were stopped Sunday night.

      Sources said the FBI suspected the men may have had a role in the bombing and were questioning them at the FBI headquarters in Manhattan.

      It is believed the men, who live in New Jersey, were heading to the airport when they were busted.

      Meanwhile, New Jersey Transit says service on the Northeast Corridor line has been suspended between Newark and Elizabeth because of police activity near Elizabeth.

      A source said that at least one explosive device was found at the train station in Elizabeth.

      Sunday’s bombing in New York left 29 injured when a small bomb went off on West 23rd Street. Another device was found on 27th street, but it did not explode.

      Also, officials were investigating if the two New York bombs were connected to a bomb that went off at a charity road race in Seaside Park, NJ, that occurred on the same day.

    • Suspicious package found as five detained over New York bomb

      THREE pipe bombs and two other devices have been found near a New Jersey station as five suspects were detained in relation to the Manhattan dumpster blast.

      Police were warned by an anonymous caller that more explosions would follow Saturday’s bombing in New York.

      Trains travelling through the station in Elizabeth, NJ, were suspended and homes and businesses evacuated after the suspicious package was found on the tracks, according to CBS local media.

      A hazmat team was called to the scene and Union County Bomb Squad brought in a robot as trains on the Northeast Corridor between Newark Airport and Penn Station were cancelled.

      The news comes as five people were arrested in Brooklyn, 24 hours after Saturday night’s bombing in New York’s fashionable Chelsea district, in which 29 people were injured.

      The suspects were in a “vehicle of interest” heading east at around 9.30pm Sunday night Eastern Time on the Belt Parkway from the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, the FBI confirmed. A weapons stash was found inside the SUV, the New York Daily News reported.

      New York State Senator Marty Golden posted on Instagram that the arrests had “a possible connection to the bombing” in Chelsea.[…]

  2. Device explodes near N.J. train station as robot tries to disarm it

    A device found in a backpack near a train station in New Jersey exploded early Monday while a bomb squad robot was trying to disarm it, authorities said.

    Christian Bollwage, the mayor of Elizabeth, said that two men found a bag containing five devices in a trash can at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday. The bag had wires and a pipe protruding from it.

    Bollwage said the FBI was attempting to disarm one of the devices when it exploded. It warned that other explosions were expected.

    There were no immediate reports of any injuries or damage.

    HEAVY – ISIS Ties ‘Spy’ to Pole, Fires Machine Gun at Him, & Beheads Him

    A new video purportedly released by the Islamic State titled “So Take Warning” shows an alleged spy being brutally executed in “Wilayat Halab,” aka Aleppo, Syria. The video was released on September 18 on ISIS terrorist channels.

    In the interview portion of the video, the condemned man refers to himself as a “rafidi.” Rafidi is a derogatory term for Shia Muslims used by Sunnis. It means “rejectors” because Shia Muslims believe in a different line of successorship for Islam following the death of its founder, Muhammad.

    Rafidi is often used by ISIS to refer to “Iran” as a whole as Iran is majority Shia or for the Shia-backed government of Iraq.

    The man repeatedly mentions Iran in the interview.

  5. Almost 100,000 Somali Refugees Admitted to US Since 9/11; 99.6% Muslim

    (CNSNews.com) – Almost 100,000 Somali refugees have been resettled in the United States since 9/11, including 8,619 so far during the current fiscal year. The largest number – some 16 percent of the total over the past 15 years – have been resettled in Minnesota, home to the nation’s biggest Somali-American community.

    Of the 97,046 Somali refugees admitted to the U.S. since the fall of 2001, 99.6 percent were Muslim, and 28,836 (29.7 percent) were males between the ages of 14 and 50.

    In FY 2015 Somalis were the third largest contingent of refugees admitted to the U.S. – 8,858, or 12.6 percent of the total from around the world. Only Burma, with 26.3 percent, and Iraq, with 18.1 percent, accounted for larger groups of refugees arriving in the country.

    The biggest influx of Somali refugees over the past 15 years occurred during the FY 2004-2006 period, after which the numbers dwindled before picking up again from FY 2014-2016, State Department Refugee Processing Center data show.

    Nearly 20 percent of the 4,600 Syrian refugees already brought to the United States were settled in the New York-New Jersey area, site of weekend bombings that reportedly could be a dry run of future terror attacks.

    According to State Department figures covering 2011-May 2016, 805 Syrians were placed in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut.

    The uncertainty cast doubts on a U.S.-Russian plan to set up a coordination center that would plan strikes against militants in the country.

    The two sides, which brokered the truce earlier this month, had said that if it holds for seven days, it would be followed by the establishment of a Joint Implementation Center for both countries to coordinate the targeting of Islamic State and al-Qaida-linked militants.

    As violations mount, a senior Syrian opposition official declared the cease-fire “clinically dead,” adding that government forces have violated the truce all over the country.

  11. NY, NJ bombings: Man wanted ID’d, terror cell likely involved, officials say

    New York (CNN)Bombings in New York and New Jersey over the weekend — as well as the discovery of several unexploded devices — have led authorities to believe there may be a terror cell at work in those two states, law enforcement officials told CNN Monday.
    And a manhunt is under way for 28-year-old Ahmad Khan Rahami after New York police identified him as wanted in connection with the bombing Saturday night in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood, which wounded 29 people.

    Earlier Saturday, a garbage can exploded near the starting line of a Marine Corps charity run in Seaside Park, New Jersey.
    And on Sunday night, a backpack with multiple bombs inside was found in Elizabeth, New Jersey. As authorities tried to investigate, one of those bombs exploded.

    President Obama’s motorcade passed through 23rd Street, the location of Saturday night’s bombing, and slept in Manhattan Sunday night — but he still hasn’t made any public remarks on the attack in Chelsea.

    Instead, Obama’s first stop in New York City Sunday night was at the Gramercy Park home of restaurateur Danny Meyer and actress Audrey Meyer to attend a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.

    Obama talked about the importance of this election — “the most important election of our lifetime” — and discussed why he believes Clinton is failing to run away with it.

    “[T]his should not be a close election, but it will be,” Obama claimed. “And the reason it will be is not because of Hillary’s flaws, but rather because, structurally, we’ve become a very polarized society. And if all you’re doing is watching Fox News and listening to Rush Limbaugh and reading some of the blogs that are churning out a lot of misinformation on a regular basis, then it’s very hard for you to think that you’re going to vote for somebody who you’ve been told is taking the country in the wrong direction.   16. Men In Miami Beach Penthouse Aimed Rifle At Street, Took Photos

    MIAMI BEACH (CBSMiami) — Three men have been arrested after creating a security scare atop a Miami Beach penthouse.

    Mohamed Azab Youssef, 39, Artur Schaback, 28, and Ivan Suhharev, 28, were apprehended by Miami Beach Police Friday, September 17th.

    Police said Schaback and Suhharev were witnessed aiming an AR-15 rifle off the penthouse balcony at 1100 Collins Avenue, including Schaback wearing a mask over his face.

    One caller told 911 they were pointing the firearm towards the busy street at citizens and tourists walking by.

    A new study finds Venezuela on the brink of famine, with an alarming fifteen percent of citizens saying they can only feed themselves with “food waste discarded by commercial establishments,” while nearly half say they have had to take time off work to search for food.

    The study — conducted by More Consulting and published in the Spanish-language Diario de las Américas — reflects a reality that has become the signature of President Nicolás Maduro’s tenure: a food and medicine shortage that forces most in the nation to wait in supermarket lines that can last up to eight hours. On many occasions, after the wait, they find that there is nothing left to buy.

  18. China facing full-blown banking crisis, world’s top financial watchdog warns

    China has failed to curb excesses in its credit system and faces mounting risks of a full-blown banking crisis, according to early warning indicators released by the world’s top financial watchdog.

    A key gauge of credit vulnerability is now three times over the danger threshold and has continued to deteriorate, despite pledges by Chinese premier Li Keqiang to wean the economy off debt-driven growth before it is too late.

    The Bank for International Settlements warned in its quarterly report that China’s “credit to GDP gap” has reached 30.1, the highest to date and in a different league altogether from any other major country tracked by the institution. It is also significantly higher than the scores in East Asia’s speculative boom on 1997 or in the US subprime bubble before the Lehman crisis.

    Studies of earlier banking crises around the world over the last sixty years suggest that any score above ten requires careful monitoring. The credit to GDP gap measures deviations from normal patterns within any one country and therefore strips out cultural differences.

  19. Suspects in Wyman Park stabbing filmed the assault, posted to Facebook

    A group of young people put a gun to the head of a 64-year-old man reading a book at the Wyman Park Dell, sprayed him with Mace and stabbed him before stealing his belongings — an attack that they recorded on video and posted on Facebook, city police revealed Friday.

    Police announced the arrests of two people in connection with the daytime crime, which occurred Monday, and said the group is believed to be responsible for other recent robberies. At least one of the suspects has already been charged in another robbery earlier this month, of a pizza delivery driver who was choked until she nearly lost consciousness.

    Pot, meet kettle. A man who produced a number of pro-terrorist tweets back when he was a member of the Obama adminstraton has taken to Twitter again, this to weigh in on the New York City bombing Saturday.

    Mohamed Elibiary served as a Department of Homeland Security adviser to the president through September of 2014 when he was dismissed for having tweeted out his admiration for the Muslim Brotherhood and support for Islamism.

    Two officers were hit in the shootout with Ahmad Khan Rahami in Linden, New Jersey, the mayor of the nearby city of Elizabeth said. One officer’s vest was struck, and the other was shot in the hand.

    Ahmad Khan Rahami, the man suspected in bombings in New York and New Jersey, is now in custody after a shootout with police, sources said.
    The shootout happened Monday in Linden, New Jersey, a local and federal law enforcement official said. Rahami was taken to an ambulance in a stretcher with his right shoulder bloodied and bandaged.

      An Afghan immigrant wanted for questioning in the bombings that rocked a New York City neighborhood and a New Jersey shore town was taken into custody Monday after a shootout with police in New Jersey, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press.

      WABC-TV footage showed a man believed to be 28-year-old Ahmad Khan Rahami being loaded into an ambulance on a stretcher in Linden, New Jersey. He appeared to be conscious and looking around.

      The law enforcement official, who was not authorized to discuss the investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity, said two officers were shot in the gun battle.

      The arrest came just hours after police issued a bulletin and photo of Rahami, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Afghanistan with an address in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

      Authorities said the blasts were looking increasingly like an act of terrorism with a foreign connection.

      Police did not disclose how they zeroed in on Rahami but were known to be poring over surveillance video. At the same time, five people who were pulled over in a vehicle Sunday night were being questioned by the FBI, officials said.

    A new refugee camp opened its doors for the first time in Como, northern Italy, on Monday morning.

    The camp consists of 50 pre-fabricated modules, which can host 300 people and its residents can also find a laundrette, doctors and legal assistance on site. Prior to the camp’s opening the majority of the 300 refugees and migrants in the town stayed in tents and slept outside Como train station. However some of the refugees protested against being moved to the new site, as they feel it would restrict their freedom of movement.     After a bomb went off at 23rd Street and 6th Avenue in Manhattan and another bomb was found four blocks away, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said: In a press conference in the aftermath, New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio said, “This was an intentional act.” However, he added that he didn’t think it was terrorism, and refused to agree with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who said that the bombing was “obviously an act of terrorism.”

    De Blasio’s position was entirely incoherent: what is an intentional bombing if it isn’t terrorism? Cuomo made a bit more sense as he explained that while it was obviously terrorism, “it’s not linked to international terrorism. In other words, we’ve found no ISIS connection.”

    Very well. So he was leaving the door open to it being “right-wing extremists.” But was it an act of jihad? Both de Blasio and Cuomo were committed to denying that there is any jihad that has anything to do with terrorism in the first place, so they would never answer (or, given the state of the mainstream media, be asked) that question, but just to assert that the bombing was not terrorism, or international terrorism, did not entirely rule out that it may have been an act of Islamic jihadis. Yet De Blasio remained mystified: “We know it was a very serious incident, but we have a lot more work to do to be able to say what kind of motivation was behind this. Was it a political motivation? Was it a personal motivation? We do not know that yet.”

    Eleven days ago Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump gave a revolutionary speech in Cleveland about public education that should have changed the face of American politics forever. Unfortunately few people know about this compassionate blueprint for desperately needed change. That is because the Sept. 8 address came the day after Trump’s strong performance at the Commander In Chief Forum hosted by Matt Lauer. Pundits’ tongues were still wagging furiously over what happened at that event as the thought that Trump could actually win in November began to sink in.

    But it’s not just the fault of talking heads and the rest of the mainstream media. Trump did himself no favors during what was touted as a major speech focusing on education and lifting up America’s inner cities. Instead of diving right in, he devoted the first 18 minutes to attacks on Hillary Clinton over national security issues and the war on the Islamic State that had nothing to do with America’s inner cities and the decades that corrupt big city Democrats have spent oppressing inner-city children.

    In short Trump’s revolutionary call to arms against the public school monopoly was effectively buried by the candidate’s lack of discipline. Consequently, few people are aware of Trump’s unprecedented proposal for a $130 billion plan to bail poor inner-city kids out of schools that don’t teach them, who are thus condemned to lives of grinding poverty.

    In a recent press conference, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told the media that Canada, having been tolerant enough to admit many Muslim immigrants, including some 25,000 Syrians this past year, should now go “beyond tolerance.”

    I like press conferences and also debates because at such times it is hard for our politicians to be “scripted” and therefore they tend to say what they are really thinking, not what their PR people tell them to say. And so, Trudeau, whose response to Islamism seems to involve something called “inclusive diversity,” avoids the gist of the issue, which is to determine to what extent radical Islam and its political ideologies of jihad and sharia law are threats to Canadian values and rights. This politician, who never finished university, seemed rather uneducated in the matter of ideology. Should we welcome evil ideologies as part of our inclusive diversity? Do we still believe that some things are good and some are evil? Do we think that a nice Canadian welcome, together with conduct and words not just tolerant, but beyond tolerant, will turn intolerant jihadists into tolerant Canadians?

    The problems we are facing are legion. Just last week, a report was issued on the extremist literature found in Canadian mosques. In The Lovers of Death? Islamist Extremism in our Mosques, Schools and Libraries, a former RCMP security analyst and an Egyptian-born expert on Muslim extremism concluded: “It is not the presence of extremist literature in the mosque libraries that is worrisome,” the new report contends. “The problem is that there was nothing but extremist literature in the mosque libraries.”

    If our Prime Minister thinks the solution to jihadist pro-Sharia law extremism and terrorism is to be more and more “inclusive” and “beyond tolerant,” we may have a problem.

    “Christians and Americans have no place among us” one man screamed “They want to wage a crusader war to occupy Syria.”

    Another yelled “The collaborators of America are dogs and pigs. They wage a crusader war against Syria and Islam.”

    The confrontation was sparked when members of the FSA accused the Americans of supporting the Kurdish YPG militias, which America has been backing in their fight against ISIS, according to Charles Lister, a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute.

    Turkey, which also backs Sunni rebels, wants to stymie Kurdish militias and frustrate their efforts to gain greater power and autonomy.

    Meanwhile on Sunday a US led coalition airstrike killed at least 62 Syrian regime soldiers near Deir Ezzor airport, in a strike it says was aimed at ISIS positions but accidentally hit the Syrian regime soldiers.

    Anyone that has studied the real truth of the Castro Revolution in Cuba knows that what I am about to write below is the truth. Of course, this version of history is not taught in American schools and is not supported by the ideological liars that fawn over mass murderers like the Castro brothers and their executioner, Che Guevara.

    Castro began his fight by attacking a rural government barracks after his landing on the Cuban coast. He failed at that attempt and was eventually captured and incarcerated. Batista pardon him some time later and he went right back to the fight, this time by entrenching himself in the Western mountain region of the island. From there he started his terrorist attacks. These followed several different methodologies.

    One was to burn large sugar cane fields at night. Sugar cane processing was one of Cuba’s main sources of export and, unfortunately for the plantation owners, the cane burns quite easily. This was done as a method of extortion by which the assaults would stop if the plantations paid Castro “protection money” that he would then use to buy arms here in the US and to pay for the stuff he needed in support of his “revolution”.

    Another method was geared at disrupting every day civilian life and tourism, another source of income for Cuba back then. This was achieved by the use of terrorism pretty much like this great article is describing. Bombs were place in street corners, generally dropped inside water drains that coincided with bus stop benches. Bus transportation was very popular and during rush hours, those benches were often packed with people waiting for the bus to go home from work.

    Another tactic was to disrupt places of leisure like movies, big department stores, casinos, public events and public beach clubs. A particularly useful tactic was to place a small bomb with a magnet under a movie theater seat (which had metal frames) so that a father with his wife and kids would be blown sky high while watching a matinee on a Sunday afternoon. Drive bys using Thompson sub-machine guns on crowded public events were also used.

    Is any of this starting to sound familiar? Attacks on movies, shopping centers, public events, etc. all geared at killing or wounding as many innocent civilians as possible with an eye to disrupting every day life for all and to forcing government to use more and more brutal force, something that also causes dissension and bad reactions from the public.

    Move over to Venezuela and you’ll find the exact same tactics used by the communists there. Time travel to Mexico during its own revolution or to today with the drug cartels and you will see, again, the same tactics implemented, perhaps with different more modern weapons but with the same objective.

    Make a bigger geographical jump to Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, or to most of Africa, even to Europe and you will see that these same tactics, perhaps a bit more focused or refined are still in use today. Sometimes conducted by rebels and some times conducted by governments.

    My point being that there is nothing new or novel happening. The only real news is that it has finally arrived at our shores and that it is now happening here too. Also that our best bet would be to carefully study every successful counter action that others might have conducted in the world’s long history fighting terror tactics and to learn from that just like the terrorist have learned from all their own successfully carried out terror operations.

    Falconer is the owner of Tactical Advantage, a shooting range and tactical training facility. He was also formerly the police chief of the Albany (MN) Police Department and is still a part-time police officer.     “Are you concerned that this weekend’s attacks or potential incidents in the coming weeks might be an attempt by ISIS or ISIS sympathizers, or really any other group, maybe the Russians, to influence the presidential race in some way, and presumably try to drive votes to Donald Trump, who is, as you’ve said before, widely seen as perhaps being somebody who they would be more willing to—or see as an easier person to be against?” the reporter asked.

    It should be noted that by the time this intrepid reporter asked her question, the FBI had already identified 28-year-old Ahmed Khan Rahami, an Afghan-born naturalized U.S. citizen, as the bombing suspect. In other words, there was absolutely no reason for her to ponder if the bombings could have been carried out by the Russians — other than to add fuel to Clinton’s paranoid fantasy that Trump is working in collusion with Vladimir Putin to rig the election.

  44. Bomb suspect Rahami a deadbeat, hated America, says his daughter’s mother

    The man who police nabbed and shot Monday after a day-long dragnet in connection with a series of terror attacks in and around New York was a bad father who disliked America, hated gays and took long trips to his homeland of Afghanistan, according to the mother of his young daughter.

    Maria, whose full name is being withheld by FoxNews.com, said her high school sweetheart, Ahmad Khan Rahami, didn’t pay child support and often railed against American culture. The 26-year-old, who spoke after her grandmother called her for a reporter who produced his press credential and identified himself at the grandmother’s home in Elizabeth, said she had not seen Rahami in two years.

    “He would speak often of Western culture and how it was different back home,” she said. “How there weren’t homosexuals in Afghanistan.

    “He seemed standoffish to American culture, but I never thought he would cross the line,” she added.

    Rahami, 28, was identified by authorities early Monday, following a weekend of possibly related bombings in Seaside Park, N.J., and the Chelsea section of Manhattan. In addition, five homemade bombs were found in Elizabeth late Sunday, including one that was detonated by police. Authorities told Fox News Rahami’s fingerprint was found on an unexploded bomb discovered in Manhattan Saturday night, and it is believed the same person or persons were behind the bombs, none of which caused fatalities.

    Five men detained in connection with the probe after a traffic stop in Brooklyn were released Monday, and authorities said they do not believe the bombs were the work of a terror cell.

    Maria recalled one chilling exchange in which the father of her child – a “class clown” in high school – demonstrated his hatred for the U.S. military.

    “One time, he was watching TV with my daughter and a woman in a [military] uniform came on and he told [their daughter], ‘That’s the bad person,'” she said.

    It was not clear when Rahami’s family came to the U.S., but officials said Rahami, who worked at one of his family’s restaurants, First American Fried Chicken, in Elizabeth, is a U.S. citizen. That restaurant is now closed after long-running code-enforcement problems with city inspectors, according to Elizabeth officials.

    Rahami was taken into custody late Monday morning after a shootout with police in Linden, N.J., near Elizabeth after the FBI circulated a wanted poster. No one was killed in the shootout, and Rahami was seen being placed in an ambulance just before noon.

    At Edison High School, where Rahami and Maria met, Rahami got along with classmates and was known as the class clown, she said. But he often criticized American culture, comparing it to the strict Islamic code of his homeland.

    “I never thought he would do something like this,” she said through tears. “I think he was brainwashed.”

    Maria recalled that Rahami would often go back to Afghanistan to see family, and would stay for weeks, or even months. Right before their daughter was born, Rahami was in Afghanistan and had trouble returning because authorities in Afghanistan confiscated his passport for unknown reasons, Maria said. The last time Maria knows that Rahami visited his homeland was nine years ago. He brought back a wife and another child, she said.

    Maria did not say what prompted their breakup, and cut the interview short saying she did not want to speak to a reporter. But she did say she did not want Rahami around their daughter, whom she did not name.

    “I didn’t want him to see my daughter,” she said. “If he loved her, he would have paid child support. My greatest fear is that he would try to take my daughter.”

    Chelsea bomb suspect found religion after trip to Afghanistan

    The Chelsea bombing suspect is an Afghan native who studied criminal justice and liked fast cars — and friends said he became deeply religious after returning from a trip home two years ago.

    “He came back, popped up out of nowhere and he was real religious,” friend Flee Jones, 27, told the Boston Herald of 28-year-old suspect Ahmad Khan Rahami. “And it was shocking. I’m trying to understand what’s going on. I’ve never seen him like this.”

    Rahami traveled to Afghanistan multiple times in past years, according to CNN.

    He’d also been posting radical Islamic writings on a personal website, sources told DNAInfo.

    Rahami, who’s suspected of setting off explosions in Manhattan and New Jersey that left 29 wounded, worked at his family’s restaurant, First American Fried Chicken, in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

    But he was the “black sheep” of his family and didn’t get along with his dad, his sister told FBI investigators.

    “The sister is shocked. She can’t believe what he’s done,” a source said.

    Rahami has been arrested on domestic violence charges for allegedly attempting to stab his sister, Rep. Peter King (R-NY) told CNN.

    Law enforcement sources said he spent a little over two months behind bars at Union County jail on a weapons and aggravated assault charge in 2014.

    Rahami graduated from Edison High School in 2007 and attended Middlesex Community College between 2010 and 2012. He was a criminal justice major until he dropped out.

    Customers at his family’s restaurant described Rahami as a seemingly friendly person with a car obsession.

    “All this guy ever talks about is his cars,” said Ryan McCann, 33. “He loves fixing cars up and making them fast. All I ever heard him talk about was Honda Civics, Honda Accords, maybe an Acura. He would soup them up.”

    When business was slow, Rahami would often pull out his Koran and play Middle Eastern music, said customer Brayant Ocampo, 17.

    “One day I asked him about it and he said it’s like a Bible for our religion,” Ocampo recalled. “He was into his religion.”

    “Three foreign workers, including two Italians, were kidnapped in southwestern Libya Monday, Italy’s Foreign Ministry and officials in the town of Ghat said.

    The ministry said in a brief statement that it had learned about the abduction. It declined to provide further details, citing the “delicateness” of the situation.

    A statement by the media office of Ghat municipality said that foreign engineers, who worked for construction company CON.I.COS, were abducted by unidentified assailants on the road linking Tahala and Ghat early in the morning. It gave their names as Italians Bruno Cacace and Danilo Calonego, and a Canadian identified only as Frank.

    The statement quoted the head of the Ghat Municipal Council Koumani Mohammed Saleh as saying that al-Qaida is not behind the abduction.

    “The abduction of the engineers was carried out by a small outlawed group,” he was quoted as saying.

    He also said that officials are working on securing their release. The incident, the statement said, is “unprecedented” in Ghat.
