Denmark: Muslims honor Palestinian gunman shot dead in Copenhagen

Comment: COPENHAGEN – Monday Feb 16 3.42pm

Dozens of bouquets of flowers were left Monday at the site in Copenhagen where the suspected gunman behind two fatal shootings at the weekend was killed by police.
An AFP reporter saw several people laying flowers outside the building in the inner-city neighbourhood of Noerrebro where Omar El-Hussein was shot dead.

An elderly woman, who brought flowers but did not wish to be identified, said “the boy didn’t know what he was doing.”

Nicolaus Lambert, who also laid a bouquet at the site, told AFP he wanted to show “forgiveness.”

The scene attracted a small group of onlookers but many more passed by with only a quick glance at the mounting pile of blossoms.

“What [the gunman] did was wrong,” said one of the onlookers, Mohammed, who didn’t give his last name.

Others seemed less understanding.

“Flowers for a despicable coward on Svanevej. This is a photo no one wants to see. It shows that there is unfortunately an ‘us’ and ‘them’. The essential thing is then is who is ‘us’ and ‘them’. Time and discussion will show,” leading Venstre politician Søren Pind wrote on Facebook, posting a photo of the flower display.

Monday 5.31pm
A group of young men wearing hoods to partially cover their faces has removed flowers that were laid at the Copenhagen spot where the presumed gunman was killed by police.
The men can be seen in a video from TV2 News kicking the flowers and carrying them away.

One of the men told reporters that they removed the flowers because it is not a Muslim tradition to lay flowers for dead people.

A man from Liverpool has been charged with attempting to obtain a chemical weapon, police have said.

Mohammed Ammer Ali, 31, is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in central London on Tuesday.

He was arrested on Wednesday, when officers from North West Counter Terrorism Unit and Merseyside Police searched five Merseyside addresses.

Officers have uncovered no plan or threat of an imminent attack either at home or abroad, police said.

The suspect is accused of attempting to have a chemical weapon in his possession between January 10 and February 12, contrary to the Criminal Attempts Act 1981 and the Chemical Weapons Act 1996.

  2. 30,000 at Copenhagen rally to commemorate shooting victims

Some 30,000 people gathered in Copenhagen Monday to commemorate the victims of twin shootings that shocked the nation, with the Danish premier telling the crowd that an attack on the country’s Jews was an attack on all of Denmark.

“Tonight I want to tell all Danish Jews: you are not alone. An attack on the Jews of Denmark is an attack on Denmark, on all of us,” said Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt.

She was speaking near a cultural centre where a gunman opened fire Saturday on a meeting discussing free speech and Islam, killing a 55-year-old film director.

Early Sunday morning, an attack on Copenhagen’s main synagogue, reported to have been carried out by the same gunman, resulted in the death of a 37-year-old Jewish man.

The turnout at the gathering Monday evening, happening in chilly darkness, was large by Danish standards.

“There are about 30,000 at the venue, as many as we expected,” a police spokesman told AFP about the gathering.

“We insist on living free and safe lives in a democratic country, and this is why we are assembled here tonight,” Thorning-Schmidt said at the rally.

“When others try to scare us and tear us apart, our response is always a strong community. We are absolutely determined to safeguard our values.”

The suspected gunman, a 22-year-old Dane with gang ties and a violent past, was killed in a shootout with police on Sunday.

  4. Any civilized person would accept the flowers in the spirit of kindness with which they were offered.

But with Muslims, it’s my way or the highway.

    Screw them.
