Video of lynch mob killing two teenage brothers sparks mass demonstrations across Pakistan

A horrifying video of a crowd watching a mob beat two teenage brothers to death has sparked mass demonstrations in Pakistan.
The video, broadcast on Pakistani news channels, shows a lynch mob taking turns to savagely beat the two boys with sticks, drawing blood from them before dragging and hanging their dead bodies from a nearby pole.
But perhaps just as shocking is that none of the dozens of people and police watching tried to stop the vicious attack.

It is now thought the boys, who were on their way to play cricket in Sialkot, an eastern Punjab province, may have been mistaken for robbers by the group who decided to deliver brutal justice for their supposed crime last Sunday.
The scenes have outraged Pakistanis, some who are questioning how their society could passively watch the shocking killings without intervening.

The News, an English-language daily newspaper, wrote: ‘Is this what we are? Savages? So utterly bereft of a speck of humanity that a crowd of ordinary men are passive spectators to public murder?’
The government has responded to the attack after civic groups condemned the killings and youths held demonstrations.
As details have emerged authorities appear increasingly confident the two boys – Moiz Butt, 17, and his brother Muneeb, 15 – were innocent.
The two went to play cricket after praying and eating breakfast, carrying a bag with them containing game equipment, said Mujahid Sherdil, a top government official in the district.

They were sons of a middle-class man who deals in fabric for soccer balls. Moiz was honoured with the title ‘Hafiz’ for having memorized the Muslim holy book, the Quran.
An armed robbery had taken place in the vicinity of the cricket field so residents were on alert and police were nearby.
When the boys appeared with a bag they were thought to be the robbers Mr Sherdil said.
He added, however, that more information was still being sought.
The boys were believed to have been in fights over the past few days for the right to play on the cricket ground, which was about a mile from their home.
Stations showing the video blurred out some of the more graphic images of the boys’ bloodied bodies, but several faces in the crowd are clearly identifiable, including several police officers in uniform who watched.
Punjab province Police Chief Tariq Saleem said the government has ordered two separate inquiries into the killings.
‘This incident is highly condemnable, especially in the police presence,’ Saleem said after visiting the boys’ family. ‘All accused, including police, will be arrested soon.’

Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik visited the family of the two boys Sunday in Sialkot and issued an appeal for citizens to come forward with evidence to help the
investigation.
He said at least 10 suspects have been arrested, including four police officers.
Malik criticised the spectating police officers’ lack of action, saying they should have at least fired their guns in the air to disperse the crowd.
He also said the disgusted nation are baying for the mob’s blood.
‘It is not the kind of incident any civilized society can afford,’ he said. ‘The whole of Pakistan wants the people involved to be punished. And we are getting demands
from the nation that they should be hanged at the very place where they murdered the two brothers.’
The brothers’ killings came as Pakistan’s government is reeling from other crises, including the worst flooding in decades. The calamity appears to have further eroded confidence in the government.
One newspaper commentator Ghazi Salahuddin wrote that the Sialkot attack and the desperation of the poor caught in the floods that have ravaged the country are “rooted in the potential inability of the state to protect and look after the citizens.’
‘These things are possible because the successive ruling elites do not really love Pakistan,’ he wrote.
‘They have never loved this country and the present government does not deserve to be blamed more for its lapses than the previous ones.’
Over the past two years, police and even soldiers have been caught on video beating suspects. In 2008, in two separate incidents in less than a week, crowds set fire to suspected robbers in the southern city of Karachi.
In the first incident, a picture of men lying like logs in a fire made the front pages of newspapers.
Islam condones death as a means of punishment for being an apostate and these barbarians wonder how this can happen? When the superiority complex is bred into the cosanguinous mind of the Muslim, and death is a sanctioned method of getting what you want, what does it matter if a little more blood is spilt? The Gods aren’t mad at the Pakistani, the Pakistani are mad as hatters for building and living in flood plains and then acting all surprised when the annual monsoons, which happen “annually”, flood them out. If the Pakistani spent more energy on infrastructure and less on their war machine so they can taunt India and build nuclear weapons, which are really freakin’ expensive to maintain, then maybe this kind of environmental equilibrium wouldn’t affect so many.
And as for it being Ramadan, acts of violence and terrorism in the name of Islam always spike during this time. I’d be grumpy too if I was hungry, but not to the point of killing thieves, even suspect ones. It’s just not in my religion or belief system. In fact, weren’t they just supposed to face amputation of a hand and the opposite foot or sumpthin’ according to the barbaric ways of Sharia?

The sad fact of the floods in Pakistan is simply the rich landowners have protected their lands by diverting the flow of the water from the dam to the lands of the poor folk. these lands would not usually flood in the mansoon rains. And when the aid arrives no doubt some of it will end up with the rich land owners rather than those affected. greed and hunger side by side. life and riches side by side and seems like wealth is more important than millions of poor people left homeless in ramadhan. THE WATER WILL EVENTUALLY DRAIN INTO THE OCEAN ….. RAISING THE SEA LEVEL .. which may affect other countries ie bangladesh who are already at a high water level! And also during the mansoon season!

However i dont think it fair, or of any real relevance to start mis quoting religous scriptures in an attempt to demonstrate ones long standing hatred towards an entire religion. It appears that atique is the only person on here with any real sense, who ironically would burn in hell according to any religous scripture for denouncing God! But as time goes by and i learn more about the world we live in and the people we share it with, i realise what you say is entirely true. There are 2 kinds of people, good, and bad and unfortunatly, although the bad are relatively few, they can alter our perception of entire groups or cultures. The religion i believe and follow is 1 of peace but the same religon is used with hatred and violence like no other so really this is not a question of whos religion or beliefs are better but how each individual uses their time on this earth. If we ALL stopped pointing fingers and looked inward the world would be like a disney movie… Or maybe a michael jackson ideal 🙂 or maybe i should just shut up and be a buddhist on 2nd thoughts 😉 peace to all and thoughts and prayers for the families of these 2 young boys.

The man who shows contempt for the judge or for the priest who stands ministering there to the LORD your God must be put to death. You must purge the evil from Israe (Deuteronomy 17:12).

just as the 16,000 acts of terrorism around the world since 9/11 perpetrated upon innocents by terrorists in the name of Islam had nothing to do with religion. Those responsible proudly and openly associate Islam with their murderous acts and no doubt would most likely find the desperate need to disassociate Islam from their acts to be insulting.
The world is not only fed up with witnessing the gross loss of life and the human potential stripped from the innocents lost at the hands of these murdering, Islamist barbarians, but also is becoming increasingly fed up with those who obsessively try to disassociate religion from such terror. The plea is fast becoming a hollow one.

Why not. I do associate this satanic act to religion. Once again it shows that praying and fasting doesn’t make you any better. The mob, I bet, was fasting which lynched these lovely innocent boys. After all this is the blessed month of Ramadan. Pakistan, perhaps is the only country in the world which was created in the name of religion, so whatever goes on here will naturally be associated with Islam.
No religion can make you better. People are either good or bad.
