Quebec closes bridges to Ontario across Ottawa, claiming Chinese Corona as the reason.

Across the World we are seeing more and more borders going up, such as the famous bridge between Denmark and Sweden, now closed due to Corona, and even the Schengen Zone closing down in the EU.

However Gatineau and Ottawa are considered one city. And its curious that only the Quebec side, a province well known for its separatist ambitions, would close of bridges going to Ontario.

Even more strange is that it appeared to be only one way. Traffic moving from Quebec to Ontario seemed to be more or less unimpeded, while traffic moving from Ontario to Quebec was slowed to the point where some complained that it took hours to cross the main bridges.

    Eeyore, your photos of the traffic piled up on the bridge going from Ottawa to Gatineau will give people the impression that the city of Gatineau has some real attraction, or redeeming quality to have such pull. Too bad your camera lense doesn’t come with an arm pit filter.

    At 2 p.m. close to 100% of those cars going to Quebec are French people returning home from work. Note the incredible volume of reverse flow of English doing the same.

    Trudeau Sr. was responsible for constructing many federal government civil service buildings on the Quebec side to please his French constituency, at the expense of English Canada. There was no logic in this move of federal assets beyond boot licking. The often-threatened separation of that province would have taken such assets with it.

    A picture paints a thousand words. This flow of afternoon commuters into La Belle Province illustrates the one-way flow of money and political capital that has gone into Quebec since multiculturalism was started by Pee-air Trudeau way back in the early ’70’s. Alas, it gives us a perfect snap shot of why it can be nicknamed Dystopia.

    Pappy used to say that French Canadians were the equivalent of American blacks in terms of their contributions to the blue-collar labour force, while possessing questionable productive capacity and work ethic. Personally, I think this was an unfair, inaccurate generalization based on something akin to racism. When I called him up on this (politely) he defiantly declared, “I have the right to my pride AND prejudices!” This would have also been around the time when Archie Bunker was a fictitious, but highly-indicative cultural icon just before political correctness began to sink its dirty little talons into our skins.

    And not to be too hard on our poor, beleagered “second-class” French who dominate the highly-paid public service workforce via quota hiring practices, and insanely-exclusionary bilingual language requirements, but what are you doing heading home at 2 p.m.? Isn’t work finished at 4 or 5 p.m.? Here is further proof that the majority of these cars must be occupied by public-sector French civil servants screwing-off early from their Ottawa work places just to beat the rush. Private sector employees would be fired for similar behavior.

    While there may be no toll to pay to cross this bridge, as I lamented the other day, there really doesn’t have to be. The toll is paid, but by the wrong people, to the wrong people, and for all the wrong reasons.
