    European Naval Mission

Merkel: A state rescue at sea would be a good idea

German Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) has called for the resumption of the state reception of immigrants in the Mediterranean. “Surely it would be good if we had a ‘Sophia’ mission again today and state ships to rescue them,” Merkel said at a reception on Thursday evening for former Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen (CDU) in Berlin, according to the news agency Reuters.

Help in the Mediterranean is just as important as combating smugglers. The European naval mission “Sophia” was not renewed in March. This was preceded by fierce protests from Italy. Germany had spoken out against it for a continuation.

Dispute over private refugee aid ship

Once again this week there had been a dispute over the admission of 147 immigrants from a private refugee relief ship. Italy’s Interior Minister Matteo Salvini (Lega) had refused the Open Arms entry into Italian waters.

As a result, Germany, France, Romania, Portugal, Spain and Luxembourg offered to allow migrants to immigrate to their countries, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte informed Salvini in a letter. The letter was published on Facebook on Thursday. Conte accused the Interior Minister of compulsively concentrating on immigration and the formula “closed ports”.

More ship waiting for permission to enter

At the beginning of August, the Italian parliament approved a new security law that would allow refugee helpers to be punished more severely if they entered Italian territorial waters illegally.

There is currently another private lifeboat with 356 immigrants on board in the Mediterranean. The ship Ocean Viking, operated by SOS Méditerranée and MSF, is waiting for a permit to enter a port in Malta or Italy.
