Friends of the Sydney knifeman responsible for a rampage through the city centre say he recently converted to Islam and was an ‘odd person’.
Mert Ney, 21, was arrested after he was subdued by heroic bystanders about 2pm using chairs and milk crates in Wynyard Street, after he allegedly killed a woman, 21, believed to be a sex worker, and stabbed multiple people.
The knifeman was seen on the corner of King and Clarence Street on Tuesday afternoon, wielding a large blade and calling on someone to shoot him.
A man was in the same class as Ney at Blacktown Boys High School said he was shocked at reports he was behind the attacks.
‘I always thought he was a bit weird and he was always posting about converting [to Islam] and stuff like that,’ the man, who wished to remain anonymous, said.
‘[But] I didn’t expect him to go this far.’

Good news: the top court in Canada’s most populous province, the Ontario Review Board, struck a strong blow against “Islamophobia” Wednesday when it declared, according to the Toronto Sun, that a young Muslim named Ayanle Hassan Ali was “now eligible for extensive forays into the community, despite remaining a ‘significant threat’ to the public.”
What could possibly go wrong? Only venomous “Islamophobes” could possibly object, right? After all, all Ayanle Hassan Ali did was stab three Canadian soldiers and explain that Allah told him to do it. How could anyone deny this fine young man the right to roam freely around Toronto, Hamilton, and other Ontario cities?
Only those “Islamophobes,” apparently. In mid-July, the Toronto Sunreported that efforts to have Ali attend Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario, “have now been scuttled,” according to Ali’s psychiatrist, Dr. Gary Chaimowitz, “because the ‘unflattering’ media coverage led them to worry that Ali himself might be in danger from another student.”

Ok, so the Sydney Stabber’s surname is Ney, not Nay.
I did a bit of research and it can be a shortened form of the irish surname O’Ney, a variant of english Nye, North German and Jewish (Ashkenazic) form of Neu (short for Neuburger and such).
So he’s probably of north-west european descent, possibly ashkenazi (Mert is a turkish given name though). And the press says he’s a convert, so it’s safe to assume he was born in Australia, not an immigrant from a muslim country.
