  1. Barry was saying that the British and the Americans did more to end slavery then any other group. For more information on this check out the life of Raja Brooke, he was wounded in India during the Sepoy Rebellion and after that war bought a small sailing yacht and with a few friends set out to see the Orient. Running across a village that had been hit by slavers he decided to make it his lifes work to send slavery in the Orient.

    The things he did sound like a story to be told to the young kids because no one older would believe them. Out numbered, out gunned he managed to bring together a coalition of fighting men would follow him anywhere. He was a natural leader who could talk you into doing things that you knew were suicidal and then he lead you through them to win and survive.

    He was real and his exploits are legendary, contrary to what most people think we still have men like him and a lot of them are in the military.

  2. In 2002 I was in Bulgaria for a few days and we visited an underground church that looked like a stone farm building from the outside.
    The tour guide told us rather matter of factually about the Janissary. They were male children that every year the Muslims demanded from their Christian Dhimmies. According to her, it was matter of fact that you had to give up a son to the Janissary.
    What she also said was that those same children would come back to Bulgaria as soldiers to enforce the empire
