Dutch armed police have surrounded a building where a suspected gunman ‘with a possible terrorist motive’ who opened fire on a tram in Utrecht, killing at least one person and injuring several others, is believed to be holed up.
The gunman, who may not have been acting alone, opened fire on a tram in the central Dutch city at around 10.45am local time on Monday, before reportedly fleeing the scene in a red Renault Clio compact sedan, which has since been found abandoned in Utrecht.
Heavily armed anti-terror officers gathered in front of an apartment block some 200 yards from the scene the shooting. Police said they were searching for the shooter ‘with all possible means.’
Shortly after 12.30pm local time, the Dutch government raised the terrorism threat level to the highest possible in the province of Utrecht.
The head of the Dutch counter-terrorism agency Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg said in a statement that the ‘threat level has gone to 5, exclusively for the Utrecht province,’ referring to the highest level, adding that the shooting ‘appears to be a terrorist attack’.

Police in Utrecht have issued the picture, believed to have been taken from the footage of a CCTV camera, of a man identified as 37-year-old Gökman Tanis. The Turkish national is currently wanted by officers who are investigating this morning’s tragic events. Earlier today a gunman opened fire against the passengers of a tram, an incident the head of Dutch counter-terrorism said appeared to be a terrorist attack.
He added shots had been fired at multiple locations, but didn’t elaborate further.
Counter-Terrorism Agency head Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg said during a news conference: “In Utrecht there was a shooting at several locations.
“A lot is still unclear at this point and local authorities are working hard to establish all the facts.
“What we already know is that a culprit is at large.”
Adding the shooting “appears to be a terrorist attack”, Mr Aalbersberg declined to confirm the number of casualties.
However, the Netherland Police have confirmed one person was killed and serveral had been injured.
The terrorism threat in the country has been raised to the highest level in the Utrecht province.
Schools were shut down and Dutch airports and other infrastructures saw their security increased with the arrival of paramilitary police.
Security was stepped up also at mosques, following the horrific massacre which took place last week in Christchurch, New Zealand.

UTRECHT, Netherlands (AP) — Dutch police were hunting down a suspect after a shooting Monday on a tram in the central Dutch city of Utrecht that left one person dead and multiple people injured.
Authorities immediately raised the terror alert for the area to the maximum level and said they are considering the possibility of a “terrorist motive” in the attack. Dutch military police went on extra alert at Dutch airports and at key buildings in the country as the Utrecht manhunt took place.
A few hours after the shooting, Utrecht police released a photo of a 37-year-old man born in Turkey who they said was “associated with the incident.” The photo showed a bearded man on board a tram, dressed in a dark blue hooded top.

On Monday China’s state council released a white paper on “the fight against terrorism and extremism” and “human rights protection in Xinjiang”, in which Beijing attempted to quantify the campaign.
“Since 2014, Xinjiang has destroyed 1,588 violent and terrorist gangs, arrested 12,995 terrorists, seized 2,052 explosive devices, punished 30,645 people for 4,858 illegal religious activities, and confiscated 345,229 copies of illegal religious material,” the report said.

There is developing news out of the Netherlands as police surround a building where at least one gunman is believed to have fled, following a deadly shooting on a tram.
According to officials, three people have died and several others were injured when a gunman walked up to the tram and opened fire Monday morning in the Dutch city of Utrecht.
Two possible suspects reportedly fled the scene in a vehicle, however, the car has since been found abandoned.
