A spokeswoman for the US Air Force presence at the Incirlik base told Stars and Stripes: “We continue to carry out our mission here at Incirlik Air Base, and we are proud of the relationship we have with our Turkish military partners.””

This trial is another assault on the rule of law in the United States, Manafort is being held in the same type of solitary that was correctly labeled torture in Tommy Robinson’s case. A total of six people have now lost their Australian citizenship since the law was changed in 2015 to enable dual nationals to lose their citizenship rights for actions contrary to their allegiance to Australia, Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton said.
They join notorious Daesh fighter Khaled Sharrouf (pictured) — who made headlines when he posted a Twitter image of his young son holding a severed head — as the only nationals to be kicked out under tougher anti-terror laws.
“I can confirm that five more individuals have ceased to be Australian citizens because of their involvement with Daesh offshore,” Mr. Dutton said in a statement.
“Fundamentally, citizenship requires allegiance to this country… these five dual-nationals have been acting against Australia’s interests by engaging with terrorism and have effectively chosen to leave the Australian community.”
The five are all aged in their 20s and 30s. Mr. Dutton provided no further details on their identities but welcomed their exclusion, saying “Australia is a safer place for not having them return.”
Sharrouf, the first Australian national stripped of his passport for Daesh links, was also a Lebanese citizen. He left Australia for Syria in 2013 with his family.
His Australian wife Tara Nettleton, who went with him, has since died and Sharrouf was believed to have been killed in a drone strike in Iraq in 2015.
Under section 35 of the Australian Citizenship Act, a dual national’s Australian citizenship automatically ceases if they act contrary to their allegiance to Australia by engaging in terrorism-related conduct.
This includes those who fight for or who are in the service of a declared terrorist organization overseas. The Islamic State group was declared a terrorist organization for these purposes since May 2016.”

The newly released data comes ahead of Sweden’s national elections in September, and was assembled by the France-based polling firm Ipsos’s “What Worries the World” study, which examines attitudes to a number of issues in various countries, ranking top issues of concern.
The data for Sweden shows 73 percent of respondents believing the country is going in the wrong direction compared to the average of 56 percent worldwide.
The poll examined citizens’ opinions on unemployment, poverty, crime and violence, financial and political corruption, as well as healthcare issues.
Crime and violence was the issue that concerned Swedes the most according to the data with 50 percent of Swedish respondents saying they were very concerned about the topic.
Violence, particularly shootings and gang violence, has seen a major rise in Sweden in the last several years, with fatal shootings with the National Board of Sweden’s Cause of Death register revealing last year that fatal shootings had doubled in less than a decade.
The most shocking shooting came earlier this year in the heavily migrant-populated ‘no-go’ city of Malmö, where three people were killed on the street. The attack was later revealed to have been linked to criminal gangs operating in the city
The second-most concerning issue for Swedes was immigration, with 33 percent finding it the most worrying topic in the country.

Bild newspaper, which first reported the news on Thursday, said he could be freed in mid-October.
El-Motassadeq was convicted in 2006 of membership in a terrorist organization and accessory to murder for aiding the three hijackers who lived in Hamburg.
He was sentenced to the maximum 15 years but will receive credit for time served after his arrest in November 2001.

The boat operated by Spanish aid group Proactiva Open Arms brought what it said were mostly Sudanese war refugees, including 12 minors, picked up off the Libyan coast on Aug. 2.
Spain allowed the boat to come after other, geographically closer, European Union countries refused to let it dock amid continuing tension among EU governments about how best to respond to the wave of migrants crossing from Africa.
Spain’s new center-left Socialist government made fair treatment for migrants one of its headline policies after coming to power two months ago.
In June, it announced measures to “put people’s rights first” in the country’s migration policies. Among other things, it took the first steps toward extending public health care to foreigners without residence permits.
That same month, it accepted the Aquarius rescue ship with 630 migrants on board after Malta and Italy turned it away.
Authorities gave those migrants who arrived in Valencia a special entry permit into Spain of 45 days for humanitarian reasons. A further 60 who arrived on a rescue ship in Barcelona last month were given a 30-day permit while they decided what to do. Their paperwork was also fast-tracked.
But those who arrived in Algeciras on Thursday will get no such special treatment.
They will be processed, the government said, like any other migrants rescued at sea: held by police for 72 hours at a migrant camp, given a medical check-up, identified and detained while they await asylum or are given an expulsion order.
The government official overseeing immigration, Magdalena Valerio, said earlier this week there would be no extra money for migrant policies before the end of the year.
The Spanish Network for Immigration and Refugee Help, a non-governmental organization, accused the government of abruptly “changing course” in its immigration policies and “discriminating” against the new arrivals.
“We’d like Spain to remain a safe haven and be a bulwark against the populism of (Italian Interior Minister Matteo) Salvini and (French far-right nationalist leader Marine) Le Pen,” the organization’s president, Daniel Mendez, told Spanish news agency Europa Press.
Critics of the new government’s perceived softer approach toward migrants said its policies had backfired, by attracting ever higher numbers, and the government is increasingly wary of that criticism.
The U.N. Migration Agency says almost 24,000 refugees and other migrants have arrived in Spain by sea this year — nearly three times the number last year.
The agency says Spain has become the most popular European destination for Mediterranean migrants, with just over 40 percent of the total, after Libya and Italy began cracking down. Most come on overcrowded smugglers’ boats from Tunisia and Morocco.
Opposition leader Pablo Casado has targeted Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s immigration policies.
“What Spaniards are looking for is a party which says clearly that we can’t give documents to everyone, and Spain can’t take in millions of Africans,” Casado said last month.
Such criticism has left Sanchez politically exposed when he heads a minority government with just 84 of the 350 seats in the lower house of parliament.
It has also fueled fears that populism may spread further in the EU. Far-right parties have joined the governments in Italy and Austria and made gains elsewhere.
Residents from the region around Algeciras expressed concern about the latest arrivals.
“With so much unemployment we do not need extra expenses,” Manuel Ruiz said. “The refugees, because they are not cared for properly, they start stealing to live and this causes all sorts of problems.” He added: “We have to give them all the aid we can, but it has to be balanced.”
Jose Lopez Vicente feared a backlash.
“I think the European Union should take more of an interest in this situation. If not, the population will become racist, even if they are not.”
Sanchez, the prime minister, says his government and EU officials are in talks with Morocco, from where traffickers take the migrants across the Mediterranean, and with the migrants’ countries of origin on how to stem the flow.
Elsewhere in the Mediterranean on Thursday, a boat carrying migrants capsized off the Turkish coast, killing seven children and two women, Turkey’s state-run news agency said. Many migrants continue to attempt to reach the Greek islands from the Turkish coast, hoping to eventually move to more prosperous European Union countries…”

A protest against police brutality itself turned violent Wednesday when activists attempted to storm Portland City Hall, clobbered one security guard and scuffled with several others.
It was the biggest disruption to a Portland City Council meeting in more than a year, but the Council did not address the substance of protesters’ ire: violent crowd control techniques used by police during a large counter-demonstration downtown Saturday.
Some of those who say they were injured by officers dressed in military gear and wielding batons or non-lethal munitions were on scene Wednesday, trying to speak with city officials.

YouTube Is Fighting Back Against Climate Misinformation
The company is trying to combat scientific misinformation on its platform. Wikipedia has been helping the streaming platform describe topics like global warming, the MMR vaccine, and UFOs.
YouTube is now adding fact checks to videos that question climate change, BuzzFeed News has confirmed, as a part of its ongoing effort to combat the rampant misinformation and conspiratorial fodder on its platform.
On July 9, the company added a blurb of text underneath some videos about climate change, which provided a scientifically accurate explainer. The text comes from the Wikipedia entry for global warming and states that “multiple lines of scientific evidence show that the climate system is warming.”
This new feature follows YouTube’s announcement in March that it would place descriptions from Wikipedia and Encyclopedia Britannica next to videos on topics that spur conspiracy theories, such as the moon landing and the Oklahoma City bombing. In doing the same for climate videos, the company seems to be wading into more fraught and complex intellectual territory.

Venezuela’s Supreme Court Orders Arrest of Opposition Leader in Connection With Maduro Assassination Attempt
(CARACAS, Venezuela) — Venezuela’s Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered the arrest of a prominent opposition leader in connection with an alleged assassination attempt against President Nicolas Maduro.
In addition to seeking the arrest of Julio Borges, the court also called for the prosecution of another opposition lawmaker, Juan Requesens, who police detained a day earlier.
The moves threaten to deepen the country’s political crisis as opposition lawmakers accuse the government’s ruling part of using the alleged attack to clamp down on the opposition.
Video circulating Tuesday on social media showed Venezuela’s political police arresting Requesens, a 29-year-old deputy in the opposition-controlled National Assembly. Supporters say he was kidnapped from his apartment.
On Wednesday, the supreme court ordered the arrest of Borges, accusing him of “flagrant crimes,” including public incitement, treason to the fatherland and the attempted homicide against Maduro.

Ecuador declares state of emergency over Venezuelan migrants at border
QUITO, Aug 8 (Reuters) – Ecuador on Wednesday declared a state of emergency in three provinces due to an unusually high volume of Venezuelan migrants crossing over the northern border with Colombia after fleeing the OPEC nation’s economic crisis.
Venezuela’s hyperinflation and chronic product shortages have fueled an exodus of citizens who typically travel by land via Colombia, often continuing south toward Andean nations including Ecuador, Peru and Chile.
“The government of Ecuador has declared a state of emergency related to human migration in the provinces of Carchi, Pichincha and El Oro to provide urgent attention to the Venezuelan migrants on the northern border,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.
It added that Ecuador this week began receiving 4,200 Venezuelan migrants arriving each day. It did not say how many had been arriving before or why the numbers had increased.
The state of emergency, which will last for the month of August, is meant to speed up the deployment of doctors and social workers to attend to the migrants’ needs, as well as police to provide support for immigration proceedings.

Employees at a National Weather Service center in Maryland were randomly interrupted by a “message in Chinese” broadcast over the facility’s little-used intercom system on Wednesday, morningthe Washington Post reported. Bizarrely, it also reached “employees by phone” in the same complex.
Officials with the agency seem to have no idea how the message was broadcast across the entire National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Center for Weather and Climate Prediction, with both the intercom message and the phone one coming separately and lasting about 45 seconds. The actual content of the message was fortunately not all that ominous, the Post wrote, with one anonymous employee saying it roughly translated to “You have a package from Amazon at the Chinese Embassy, press 1 for more details.”

The work by academic Xue Gong and published by Singapore’s ISEAS Yusof Ishak Institute this week sheds light on a little-examined element of rising tensions across the vital trade route, showing extensive work by Chinese SOEs in developing infrastructure and tourism, as well as oil and gas, some in hotly disputed areas.
Some experts and regional diplomats believe the strong commercial presence could further complicate any future regional solution should Beijing, which research shows has encouraged firms to operate, protect them politically and militarily.

This must come as no surprise, after the highlight from last week that dossier author Christopher Steele was forwarding information to the FBI through top Justice Department official Bruce Ohr as late as May 2017.
Although Steele’s role as a confidential informant for the FBI had been terminated on 1 November 2016, because of Steele’s misconduct in leaking information to the media, the FBI continued to accept information from him well into the Trump administration. FBI personnel documented this information flow in a series of interview records, or FD-302s, recounting what Bruce Ohr passed on from Steele.
The flow of information stopped – at least according to the 302 record – only when James Comey was fired as FBI director, and Robert Mueller was appointed to investigate “Russian meddling” in the 2016 election on 17 May 2017.
