“Malaysian politicians from both government and opposition camps complained of “dirty tricks” after voting in a general election began on Wednesday, as non-stop spam calls to their mobile phones disrupted communications with party organisers.

Malaysian civil rights group Suaram said the spam calls, which have also affected civil society group leaders, was a “clear attempt to impede the work of human rights defenders and politicians at the critical juncture of voting day”.

The elections is arguably the toughest faced by Prime Minister Najib Razak’s ruling Barisan Nasional coalition, as it contends with a resurgent opposition pact led by former strongman Mahathir Mohamad.

While the complaints came from all sides, none of the political figures whose phones had been targeted specified who they suspected was behind the attack…”

  4. Deadly journeys: how despair drives young Ethiopians to flee to Yemen (theguardian, May 9, 2018)
    https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2018/may/09/young-ethiopians-poverty-yemen-the-gulf

“…The Djiboutian police estimate that around 200 Ethiopians enter undercover like this each day, trekking through some of the most inhospitable terrain on earth in the hope of reaching war-stricken Yemen, across the Red Sea, and eventually wealthy Saudi Arabia. In February IOM, the UN’s migration agency, tracked nearly 17,000 migrants in Djibouti, most making their way northwards towards the coastal towns of Obock and Tadjoura; more than two-thirds were men and 8% were unaccompanied minors. The vast majority were from Oromia.

Overall, close to 99,000 people, mostly Ethiopians (and a much smaller number of Somalis), arrived on Yemen’s Red and Arabian Sea coasts last year, up from 65,000 in 2013. Such numbers dwarf those migrating without documentation from the Horn of Africa toward Europe via the Mediterranean.

Many do not make it. The numbers that die in the Djiboutian desert are unknown but there are enough unburied dead to contaminate the water supply. Ethiopians walking along the road north to Obock told the Guardian that friends had perished en route. Another group of three, also from Jimma, say they had no food for the duration of the six-day walk from Dire Dawa. Seven of their companions were left in the desert; some got lost, they say, but one they watched die. “We’ve had no help from anyone,” says the youngest, a 10-year-old orphan.

The journey across the Bab el-Mandeb strait to Yemen is also perilous. One recent estimate put the numbers who have died making the crossing over the past decade at close to 3,000. The boats organised by smugglers are old, rickety and often overcrowded. Few Ethiopians can swim but the vessels, which depart at night in order to avoid detection, usually hover 20m or so away from the shore, which can be fatal for those clambering aboard…”

  7. Mueller rejects Trump request to answer questions in writing

Last Updated May 8, 2018 6:30 AM EDT

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who is now on President Trump’s legal team, told CBS News correspondent Paula Reid Monday that special counsel Robert Mueller’s office has rejected proposals to allow Mr. Trump to answer questions from investigators in writing.

The president’s legal team has signaled that this would be their preferred format for a possible interview, since it helps protect Mr. Trump from the possibility of lying or misleading investigators, which is a criminal offense.

Giuliani told CBS News it will take up to three weeks for him to get fully up to speed on the facts of the investigation and be prepared to engage in formal negotiations with the special counsel about the terms of a possible interview with Mr. Trump.

“You need a sort of action-forcing event. I think that’s a good one for us, is the special counsel,” Giuliani told NBC’s Kristen Welker.

  9. Google CEO unveils new era of robots that sound like humans

MOUNTAIN VIEW — Google CEO Sundar Pichai broke a new barrier in artificial intelligence technology Tuesday when he unveiled a voice assistant that sounds exactly like a human voice.

At the I/O developers conference, Pichai introduced Google Duplex, which allows the Assistant to speak with human-like cadence and includes artificial intelligence that is able to comprehend context and unclear answers.

Pichai demonstrated Duplex’s ability by having Assistant make reservations with a restaurant and a hair salon in two recorded phone calls. The receivers of the calls seemed to have no idea they were speaking to an AI voice. In the phone calls, Google Assistant said “ums” and “uhs” to make itself sound more human. In its phone call with the restaurant, where it was too busy to book a reservation, Google Assistant was able to naturally respond to questions and remarks made in a thick accent.

President Macri says it would help country ‘avoid a crisis like the ones we have faced before’

Argentina has appealed to the International Monetary Fund for an emergency credit package in an effort to avoid a financial crash and rescue its faltering peso currency from a long downward slide against the dollar.

The announcement, against a backdrop of surging interest rates and stubbornly resistant inflation, brought back echoes of Argentina’s monetary crash and foreign debt default in December 2001 when the peso dropped overnight to a quarter of its value against the dollar and bank accounts were frozen nationwide.

“This will allow us to face the new global scenario and avoid a crisis like the ones we have faced before in our history,” the president Mauricio Macri said.

MANASSAS, Va. (AP) — A 10-year-old girl and 11-year-old girl are accused of conspiring to kill a fellow student in Virginia.

News outlets cite a statement from Prince William County Police that says the two girls communicated with each other in “cryptic language” by text message and encouraged deleting threat-related messages.

Police were called to a county school April 25, after a parent made a report to staff. The two girls were each charged as juveniles with conspiracy to commit a felony on Friday.

Details of the texts weren’t disclosed, but police say the target was another girl at the school. Police didn’t release a motive. No threat was carried out.

  17. Europeans scramble to save Iran deal after Trump reneges

WASHINGTON/PARIS (Reuters) – Dismayed European allies sought to salvage the international nuclear pact with Iran on Wednesday after President Donald Trump pulled the United States out of the landmark accord, while Tehran poured scorn on the U.S. leader.

“The deal is not dead. There’s an American withdrawal from the deal but the deal is still there,” French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who had been reluctant to back the deal, said: “Mr Trump, I tell you on behalf of the Iranian people: You’ve made a mistake…I said many times from the first day: don’t trust America.”

French President Emmanuel Macron was due to speak later in the day to his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani, Le Drian said. Iran also signaled its willingness to talk.

Trump announced on Tuesday he would reimpose U.S. economic sanctions on Iran to undermine what he called “a horrible, one-sided deal that should have never, ever been made”, which was “defective at its core”.

    • Germany: Berlin determined to keep Iran nuclear deal alive – FM Maas

German FM Heiko Maas denounced US president Donald Trump’s recent decision to pull out of the Iranian nuclear agreement (JCPOA) in Berlin, Wednesday, stating that the US has nothing to offer to replace the agreement.

Speaking to the press, Maas also reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to keep the agreement, pointing out that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed that Iran is sticking to the nuclear deal.

“The international Atomic Energy Agency confirmed that Iran has been sticking to the agreement. That’s why we want to keep the control and transparency mechanisms of the agreement,” stated Maas.

“We are for securing the peaceful nature of the Iranian nuclear programme. This applies even more as it is not clear what the US suggests that could replace the agreement to prevent Iran verifiably from developing nuclear weapons and that’s what this is all about,” he added.

US President Donald Trump announced his decision to withdraw from the JCPOA, more commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal, on Tuesday. After the announcement he signed a Presidential Memorandum re-instating US sanctions against Iran that had been waived when the deal was signed in July 2015.

    • Iran: Khamenei slams Trump over nuclear deal withdrawal

Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei responded to US President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), during a speech given in Tehran on Wednesday.

“The President of the United States has made cheap and impudent remarks. There were maybe more than 10 lies in what he said. He both mentioned the JCPOA withdrawal and also threatened both the establishment and the Iranian nation that he will do this and that, and I will tell him on behalf of the Iranian people: Mr. Trump! Like hell, you will!” Khamenei said, to a chorus of cheers from the audience.

Khamenei continued: “Since the first day, I said time and again to not trust America” and when speaking about continuing the nuclear deal with European JCPOA members, namely Britain, France, and Germany, he added “I don’t trust these three countries either.”

Under the deal, known formally as the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action), Iran stopped producing 20 percent enriched uranium and handed over the majority of its stockpile in return for international sanctions being lifted.

“A string of blasts tore through Afghanistan’s capital on Wednesday morning in the latest of a series of relentless attacks which have killed scores in recent weeks.

Officials said at least six were wounded, but warned casualties were expected to rise after suicide attackers and gunmen attacked police stations in Kabul.

Islamic State claimed responsibility, the group’s Amaq news agency reported.

Hashmat Stanekzai, spokesman for police in the capital, confirmed an explosion near one police station and said a gun battle was underway there.

He said another explosion occurred near a different police station.

The Afghan capital has been besieged by a deadly suicide bombing campaign that has killed scores. The beleaguered government is struggling against both a long-running Taliban-led insurgency, and local militants who have sworn allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) extremist group. Both groups are expected to attack nationwide elections scheduled for October.

  20. Iranian base in Syria hit; location used for ‘special forces’ training, possibly drone ops support
    By J.E. Dyer May 8, 2018

It’s too early to “call” anything here, but it does look at the moment as if Israel is preempting Iran in Syria, after recent reporting that threatening Iranian movements were detected there, and Israeli forces were placed on high alert.

A report a couple of hours ago indicates that the Iranian base at Al-Kiswah, south of Damascus, was hit by an air strike on Tuesday night, 8 May 2018. Syrian news is saying the strike came from Israeli aircraft.

Al-Kiswah is the base we looked at in April, as a possible staging area for Iranian drone operations. Israel has struck it before, in December 2017.

  21. U.S. to Iran: You don’t have us over a barrel anymore
    By J.E. Dyer May 8, 2018

Sometimes the bluntest point is the most effective diplomacy. President Trump doesn’t always nail the blunt policy point in his administration’s rhetoric – sometimes he’s just being blunt on tangential topics for effect – but in the case of the Iran decision announced today, it’s the blunt policy point he’s making.

By withdrawing the U.S. from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and vowing to reimpose sanctions quickly, Trump is telling Iran: You don’t have us over a barrel anymore.

Trump is rejecting the premise that our only option to avoid war with Iran is a “deal” that leaves Iran in control of every lever that matters to becoming nuclear armed. He’s rejecting the premise that we have to avoid confronting Iran in her proxy wars abroad, so as not to jeopardize such a “deal.”

By extension, he’s rejecting the premise that we have to refrain from supporting the Iranian people’s own desire for political reform – even regime-change – lest we lose the “deal partners” who agree (if bribed sufficiently) to keep holding us over a barrel and shaking us down.

    http://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/05/09/just-18-per-cent-of-flemish-say-islam-is-compatible-with-the-west/

“Fewer than one in five Flemish Belgians consider Islamic values compatible with their own way of life, a survey has found, with many Muslim migrants saying Islam is more important than Belgian law.

Large-scale Muslim immigration into Flanders, the Dutch-speaking northern region of Belgium, means Islam is now the largest minority religion after Catholicism, forming about 3.9 per cent of the general population and 25 per cent of the population in Brussels, a French-speaking enclave and the capital city of the European Union (EU).

A poll of close to 4,500 Flemish Belgians and Brussels residents with Belgian, Turkish, Moroccan, Polish, Romanian, and Congolese backgrounds found just 18 per cent thought Islamic values “go well” with Western society.

Even among Belgians with a Moroccan background, 40 per cent did not agree that Muslims adapt well to Western life, De Morgen reports.

Flemish Belgians of a Polish and Romanian background were even more skeptical about Islam, with just 11 and 9 per cent of the two group saying Muslims could thrive in Western society, respectively…”

  23. Swedish Police Called Out to One Asylum House 150 Times in 18 Months (breitbart, May 9, 2018)
    http://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/05/09/police-called-single-swedish-asylum-home-150-times-year-half/

“Police in the Swedish city of Halmstad say they have been called to a single asylum home in the city around 150 times in the last year and a half for incidents including drug offences and assaults.

The asylum home of Spenshult, a former hospital, was leased to the Swedish Migration Board in 2015 and since December of 2016 has been home to between 650 to 680 asylum seekers.

Within the period of only a year and a half local police claim that they have been called to the residence 150 times, and that the instances of criminality have dramatically increased in recent months, Swedish broadcaster SVT reports.

“In the last two months, we can see a fairly sharp increase. We have as many event reports and notifications in the last two months as we normally had in three months before,” said Halmstad police officer Peter Öhrn.

Several members of staff at the asylum home have also reported receiving threats from asylum seeker residents. http://www.breitbart.com/london/2018/05/09/voluntary-repatriation-10000-migrants-helped-return-home-2000-open-small-businesses/

“A voluntary return scheme for asylum seekers and illegal migrants has helped over 10,000 people leave Greece voluntarily, with almost 2,500 opening small businesses in their countries of origin.

The Mediterranean country remains under significant strain after over 815,000 migrants flooded the country in 2015, with a multi-billion euro deal between the EU and Turkey reducing the number of sea landings significantly but leaving huge numbers squatting in the Greek islands, waiting for asylum applications to be processed.

The UN Migration Agency, also known as the International Organization for Migration (IoM), has tried to alleviate the tremendous burden on the riot-wracked islands through the Assisted Voluntary Return including Reintegration Measures (AVRR) scheme funded by the EU and the Greek government — a voluntary repatriation programme of the sort advocated by the famous British mass migration critic Enoch Powell…”

  25. Over past 12 years DEA knowingly allowed admitted addicts, dealers to prescribe drugs
By LU Staff May 8, 2018

Admitted drug addicts and dealers were among the hundreds of thousands of people and businesses the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) licensed to manufacture, distribute, or prescribe pharmaceuticals over the past 12 years, a Daily Caller News Foundation investigation has found. Over the same period the agency revoked only 240 licenses for wrong-doing.

The DEA’s Office of Diversion Control, which is responsible for issuing and revoking the permits, is, by law, fully funded by the licenses’ application fees. More than 1.7 million individuals and organizations held licenses as of March 2018 — an increase of more than 510,000 since August 2006, the earliest publicly available data, TheDCNF’s review found.

“The office … has not been very aggressive in hunting down doctors [who] are prescribing in inappropriate ways,” said Carnegie Mellon University Professor Jonathan Caulkins, who’s worked extensively in drug policy. “The DEA does not aggressively try to find corrupt or incompetent health care providers in the health care system.”

Effective enforcement is especially important given the growing opioid epidemic, Caulkins added. More than 200,000 Americans died from prescription drug overdoses between 1999 and 2016, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most heroin users begin their addiction with such prescriptions, studies have shown.

A bombshell report that came out in The New Yorker Monday night alleging a pattern of horrific abuse by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is today raising questions about how much awareness Gov. Andrew Cuomo had of his right-hand man’s behind-the-scenes conduct

Theoretically, it’s entirely possible that Schneiderman kept his demonic second life far from his boss, but it’s important to remember we’re not talking about a single accusation. As Jane Mayer and Ronan Farrow outline in their piece, four separate women detailed his “non-consensual physical violence.”

  27. Woman stoned to death in Somalia after al-Shabab conviction (abcnews, May 9, 2018)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/woman-stoned-death-somalia-al-shabab-conviction-55040424

“The Somalia-based extremist group al-Shabab says it has stoned to death a woman accused of marrying 11 men.

The al-Qaida-linked group’s radio arm Andalus reports that the stoning was carried out on Wednesday after an ad hoc al-Shabab court convicted the woman in Sablale town in Lower Shabelle region.

The report says masked men stoned to death 30-year-old Shukri Abdullahi Warsame in a public square.

The self-proclaimed judge said the woman had confessed to having secretly married 11 men in a row without seeking a divorce.

Al-Shabab has been fighting for years to impose a strict version of Islam in the long-chaotic Horn of Africa nation.

The group often executes suspected spies and people accused of adultery after convictions that human rights groups say lack the proper judiciary process.”

  28. Amnesty says London gangs database is discriminatory (abcnews, May 9, 2018)
    https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/amnesty-london-gangs-database-discriminatory-55037318

“Britain’s information watchdog said Wednesday it is investigating a police database of potential London gang members that Amnesty International alleges is racially discriminatory and breaches human rights law.

Amnesty said the Metropolitan Police Gangs Matrix is “stigmatizing young black men for the type of music they listen to or their social media behavior.”

The database holds information on almost 4,000 people. The vast majority are teens or young men, and 78 percent are black. Police figures show 27 percent of those prosecuted for youth violence are black.

Set up after England’s 2011 riots, the database compiles information including police records, information from local authorities and social-media entries to identify suspected gang members. It then uses a secret algorithm to calculate “risk of harm” scores based on the likelihood an individual will be involved in violence.

Forty percent of people on the database have a harm score of zero, meaning there is no information linking them to violence in the last two years.

Gang rivalries have been cited as a factor behind a rise in stabbings in London, and some community workers have suggested social media has helped disputes escalate quickly to violence.

“There is clearly a huge problem with knife crime violence at the moment in London, but the Gangs Matrix is not the answer,” said Amnesty U.K. director Kate Allen. “It’s part of an unhelpful and racialized focus on the concept of gangs.”

Amnesty also said in a report that there were no clear processes for reviewing or updating the database, or for challenging the inclusion of a name…”

  29. EU BOMBSHELL: Brussels using ‘backdoor to create SUPER STATE’, warns Austrian economist (express, May 9, 2018)
    https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/957279/EU-news-European-Union-super-state-created-backdoor-Philipp-Bagus-warns

“THE European Union is using a “backdoor path” in order to create a continent-wide superstate, according to shock warnings from an Austrian economist and academic.

Philipp Bagus, of the Mises Institute, said some of the bloc’s leaders have been masquerading behind claims they want to see a “deepening of the European project” instead of openly branding their objective as a “European superstate”.

German, Finnish, Dutch and Austrian leaders have demanded stricter limits on fiscal deficits and debt brakes, while some have gone even further.

French President Emmanuel Macron has called for widescale Eurozone reforms – which include a European minister for finance, a separate eurozone budget and the harmonisation of tax rates.

Mr Macron sought support from German Chancellor Angela Merkel for his reforms, however, many believe the changes would create a “transfer union” that would see Berlin provide more financial resources than it would receive from a collective fund.

However, Mr Bagus believes the EU’s current risk sharing mechanisms have created a so-called “transfer union in which risks are socialised” while “not yet institutionalised”.

The Austrian economist suggests the European Stability Mechanism and European Central Bank have all played their own role in the hidden creation of a European super state.

Mr Bagus says the ESM, which is the Eurozone’s bailout fund, allows “irresponsible governments” to “get a reward for their behaviour financed by less irresponsible governments”.

The ESM has a €500 billion capacity to bailout governments when the stability of the entire Eurozone is in danger.

In a post on the Mises Institute website, titled “The EU’s Backdoor Path to a Unified Superstate”, the economist adds: “The ECB, thereby, has become a hedge fund betting on the survival of the euro.

“The ECB buys the bonds in function of the percentage that member states hold in the capital of ECB.

“Without the program less solvent governments would have had to pay higher interest on their bonds and might have had to default.”

Mr Bragus says if bonds are not repaid in the future then the ECB will suffer losses or the “purchasing power of the euro falls, the losses may be ultimately shared by all Eurozone members”.

He proceeds to declare the EU’s Target2 payment system as another source to for financial irresponsible countries to benefit.

Using the example of a payment from a Greek firm to a German counterpart, Mr Bragus illustrates the system using “money creation” and not “real savings”.

He said: “Imagine a Greek entrepreneur purchasing a truck produced in Germany with money created by his Greek bank out of thin air.

“When the entrepreneur pays the German exporter, his bank account shrinks and the money appears on the German bank account. In order to do the payment, the Greek bank draws on its account at the Greek National Bank or borrows new reserves from it.

“The German bank increases its account at the Bundesbank or reduces its refinancing.

“On the level of central banks the Bundesbank receives a credit against the ECB while the Greek National Bank gets a debit.”

Mr Bragus proceeds to blame the payment system for allowing overspending to occur with the risk shared by the entire bloc.

He adds: “Instead of issuing Euro bonds guaranteed by all member states and import goods, there is another way to achieve the same result.

“Greek banks can simply create money issuing Target 2 debits to the ECB in order to finance the importation of goods.”

The economist concludes that all of the separate financial mechanisms set up across the bloc have already developed the Eurozone into a “transfer union”.

He said: “Euro bonds or euro budget is not necessary to have massive redistribution in the Eurozone.

“The Eurozone is already a transfer union in which risks are socialised producing irresponsible behaviour.

“However, the transfer union is not yet institutionalised. European elites are working on it.””

Up to one thousand close relatives each month will be allowed to join their family members granted subsidiary protection status in Germany, announced Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer on the new family reunion rules by the Cabinet in Berlin on Wednesday.

Seehofer stated that members of the “nuclear” family will be “granted the family reunion starting on August 1st.” They are spouses, children under 18 or parents of underage children.

The Interior Minister also expressed his satisfaction over the decision, saying it is exactly what they had previously agreed on during the Grand Coalition Agreement.

  34. Arab League calls for ‘revision’ of Iran nuclear deal (alaraby, May 9, 2018)
    https://www.alaraby.co.uk/english/news/2018/5/9/arab-league-calls-for-revision-of-iran-nuclear-deal

“The Arab League called on Wednesday for the Iran nuclear deal to be revised, echoing comments from President Donald Trump just a day after he pulled the United States out of the historic accord.

“It’s necessary to revise the agreement,” Arab League chief Ahmed Abul Gheit said, expressing the “exasperation” of Arab nations in the face of the “destabilising politics” of Iran in the region.

His comments came after Trump defied the wishes of the other parties to the nuclear deal – France, the UK, Germany, Russia and China – by announcing the US would pull out of the accord and impose new sanctions on Tehran.

The agreement puts limits on Iran’s nuclear programme in exchange of the lifting of international sanctions.

Iran’s regional foe Saudi Arabia said it “supports and welcomes” Trump’s decision, while Riyadh’s Gulf allies the UAE and Bahrain also backed the US.

The regional rival of Iran and long-time US ally, Saudi Arabia, said it “supports and welcomes” Trump’s decision.

“The kingdom supports and welcomes the steps announced by the US president towards withdrawing from the nuclear deal… and reinstating economic sanctions against Iran,” the foreign ministry said.

Riyadh’s allies in the Gulf – the UAE and Bahrain – also issued statements via their foreign ministries supporting Trump’s decision.

At an Arab League summit last month hosted by Saudi Arabia, the country’s King Salman said the regional body agreed to “renew our strong condemnation of Iran’s terrorist acts in the Arab region and reject its blatant interference in the affairs of Arab countries”.

    ‘Committed to deal’

The comments came as the UN nuclear watchdog confirmed that Iran is implementing ‘nuclear-related commitments’ under its deal with world powers.

“Iran is subject to the world’s most robust nuclear verification regime” and that the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was “a significant verification gain”, Yukiya Amano, director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reiterated in a statement.

“The IAEA is closely following developments,” Amano said.

Despite US criticism that the accord does not go far enough in monitoring Iran’s nuclear activities, the IAEA points to the fact that its inspectors have spent 3,000 man days per year on the ground in Iran.

The agency says it has attached some 2,000 tamper-proof seals to nuclear material and equipment, and that it has access to “hundreds of thousands of images captured daily by our sophisticated surveillance cameras”, the number of which has almost doubled since 2013.

Amano previously said the JCPOA’s loss would be “a great loss for nuclear verification and for multilateralism”.

Egypt backed the Arab League’s message and called for Arab participation “especially that which is related to the possibility of amending the nuclear deal with Iran”.”

  38. Weeks after a Swedish mainstream newspaper conducted a study finding that migrants make up the majority of those convicted for gang rape, a second Swedish title has revealed another study revealing the same results.
The new study, which looked at 112 men and boys found guilty of gang rape, showed that the vast majority of convicts, 82 in total, were born in a different country Aftonbladet reports.

While gang rapes are a small percentage of overall rape cases, with 29 out of 286 rape victims in 2016 claiming they had been raped by multiple men, the statistics confirm an earlier report in March by Swedish tabloid Expressen who conducted a similar study finding 32 out of 43 gang rape convicts were migrants.

  39. The failures of the Federal government when it comes to the southern border are now becoming explicitly clear.

In a recent report by the Globe and Mail Transport Minister Marc Garneau was quoted as saying “We estimate that a bit more than 90 per cent of irregular migrants do not meet our criteria (to claim asylum) and that they must leave.”

Marc’s quote roughly means that 90% of the people crossing are genuinely not refugees passing through the border, but instead are people who qualify as potential immigrants and are attempting to bypass the current legal methods of coming to Canada.

Given this high rate of non-refugees, you’d assume more people would be deported. In reality, this does not occur. In the same Globe and Mail article, Canada Border Services Agency stated that a total of 243 irregular migrants have been removed since April 2017.

That is equal to roughly 1% of the total number of individuals who crossed the border in that time period.
