One of northern Nigeria’s most influential Muslim leaders has called on people to defend themselves against attacks by the Boko Haram militant Islamist group.
The Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi, said residents should “acquire what they need” to protect themselves.
The BBC’s Will Ross, in Nigeria, says such an intervention is very unusual.
A police spokesman said the Emir’s comments were a “call for anarchy” and should not be acted on.
(Actually I don’t find the story very meaningful other than an expression of BBC and the UK’s utter desperation to somehow delink Islam and Islamic jihad groups. I really just posted it cause the guy has the coolest costume of any religious leader of all time! It’s like the guy saw the Easter special of South Park and thought, ‘What a great idea!’)

Regarding Black Pete. It’s history shows not a racist character.
The being now known as Black Pete was originally one of the black ravens that accompanied Odin and helped him judge men. That’s where the “black” originally comes from.
It changed into a black demon that was enslaved by a saint. Black as in pure black like the raven, not the skin hue of someone of African descent. It kept it’s original responsibility of helping judge.
At that point it transformed into the German Krampus, that punishes children for being naughty around Christmas.
For a while it was a “moor” and dressed in renaissance clothes. Note that it was still a beloved authority figure, a judge, who determined weather each child was naughty or nice. Pretty much just handed out treats.
I don’t think depicting a particular race as a beloved authority figure is racist. A non cartoonish drawing of a black police officer, judge, or president would be equally racist.
People became sensitive to the possible appearance of racism a generation ago so changed the character to a chimney sweep. That’s how the last few generations of children and the people who play the character perceive him.
How is Angela Merkel reacting on these demos?
