Shafiul Islam, 48, was hacked to death on his way home. An extremist group claims responsibility for his murder on Facebook. The professor was known for his liberal views and for belonging to Baul, a syncretistic spiritual group.
Rajshahi (AsiaNews) – A group of men attacked Shafiul Islam, a sociology professor at Bangladesh’s Rajshahi University (RU), as he went home, hacking him to death because he was not afraid to speak to his students about his liberal outlook in opposition to more conservative views of Islam. The killers struck him on the head and shoulders. He died later in hospital.
The victim was a Baul, a group of mystic minstrels from a variety of religious traditions, mostly Sufi Muslims and Hindus who celebrate celestial love through music, transcending differences of belief.

5. Kenyan police shoot dead man and make arrests in mosque raids
MOMBASA, Kenya, Nov 17 (Reuters) – Kenyan police shot dead one man and arrested about 250 others when they searched two mosques in the city of Mombasa that they said had been used to recruit militants and stash weapons, senior officials said on Monday.
The raid sparked a disturbance in the port city in which one more person died.
Kenya has been trying to break up the militant networks that it blames for a series of attacks on Kenya’s coastal region, home to most of its Muslims, saying many of the recruits have been inspired by the Somali Islamist group al Shabaab.

Four men were jailed for throwing a pig’s head into a mosque just two days after the murder of soldier Lee Rigby.
The friends dumped a carrier bag containing the severed pork head in the car park of Blackpool Central Mosque in Lancashire, in front of shocked women and children.
Preston Crown Court was told the pals had organised the crime as a prank, knowing it would be seen as an insult in a Muslim place of worship.

French, Dutch hostages held by Qaeda appeal in video
Al Qaeda’s north African arm, AQIM, has issued a video of a French national and a Dutch national they are holding hostage in which the two men urge their respective governments to negotiate for their release.
The video, posted on a popular jihadi forum by al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb’s media branch, is divided into two scenes showing each hostage in a different location.
The first shows Frenchman Serge Lazarevic, who has been held in the Sahara for almost three years since being kidnapped in Mali, wearing a black turban and sitting in the passenger seat of what appears to be a 4×4.
“I am very sick, my kidneys hurt and I am suffering from very high blood pressure…. I fear my life is in danger since the French intervention in Iraq.
“I ask you Mr. President (Francois Hollande) to do everything to free me because you are responsible for everything that will happen to me,” he said, ending his statement with a message to his family.
The French president’s office said in a statement that the video had been authenticated by intelligence services.
“It is a recent proof of life that we had been expecting for a long time,” the statement read, adding that the president was in touch with regional countries to use all forms of dialogue to release the hostage.
The last public proof of life for Lazarevic was in June. Philippe Verdon, another Frenchman kidnapped alongside Lazarevic, was killed by his captors in northern Mali.
The second segment shows Dutch national Sjaak Rijke, who was taken by force from a restaurant in Timbuktu in November 2011 during a trip across the Sahara.
“Today’s date is 26th Sept. 2014… it is now more than 1,000 days since my captivity in the Sahara,” said Rijke, who was wearing a white shirt with a grey sheet hiding the background.
“I’m suffering from serious back problems and I’m not well emotionally. I hold my government responsible for any harm that comes to me. Please help me.”
Reuters could not independently verify the footage of Rijke.
Neither man relayed any specific demands by AQIM, but they both alluded to the release of an American soldier in May in return for five high-profile Afghan inmates held by the U.S. military in Guantanamo Bay.
France launched an intervention against al Qaeda-linked militants in its former colony Mali in January 2013 and has since created a 3,000-strong counter-insurgency force to track down Islamist militants, including AQIM, in the desert spanning from Mauritania in the East and southern Libya in the West.

AUSTRALIA – Paint hurled at Perth mosque
The vandalism of a Perth mosque is an isolated incident and not representative of the broader community, a local Muslim leader says.
But he says it’s a reflection of “ill-content” in the community.
The Ar Rukun Mosque in the southern suburb of Rockingham was targeted by vandals some time between Sunday night and Monday afternoon, with white paint hurled over the front verandah, main doors and surrounding brickwork.
Imam Yahya Ibrahim said the incident was isolated and not a reflection of the broader Rockingham community.
He said the Islamic community had failed to communicate who and what they were and encourage people to visit the mosque.
“It’s not really about the damage, it’s more about the intention behind the message,” he told Fairfax radio on Tuesday.
“Whether it’s something minimal or greater, it’s that there’s ill-content and discontent in the community.”
Other Perth mosques and Islamic schools have also been vandalised in recent months.
In one instance, “ban Islam” was daubed on the front wall of a mosque just days after a small group of anti-Muslim protesters disrupted a peaceful rally against Islamophobia in Perth’s CBD.

UK – WALES – NEWPORT National Front try to disrupt Islamic Society peaceful march in Newport
MEMBERS of far-right party the National Front tried to disrupt a peaceful march of more than 500 Muslims from across Wales in Newport today.
The annual march, organised by the Islamic Society of Wales, commemorates the anniversary of Prophet Mohammad’s grandson, Imam Hussain, who was martyred more than 1,300 years ago.
The 32nd march to be held in Newport should have taken place last Sunday – the 10th day in the Muslim calendar – but was put back so the city’s Muslims could join in the Remembrance Sunday services.
But yesterday afternoon police stepped in when anti-Muslim protestors attempted to disrupt the peaceful march. As the hundreds of men, women and children walked along Commercial Street, two men carrying National Front flags attempted to enter the crowd from a side street.
They were joined by six more protestors who held up British and Welsh flags and shouted abuse including, “These are our streets” and “Muslims, burn in hell”.
Officers from Gwent Police and private security firms formed a barrier around the men. Two of the men were later seen in the Red Lion pub on Stow Hill, shouting abuse from inside while police blocked the entrance.
The commemorative march left the mosque on Hill Street at just after 2pm before walking along Hill Street, Commercial Street, up Stow Hill before ending in Victoria Place.
The sombre event is one of hundreds held across the world in memory of the Prophet’s grandson who died along with 72 family members at the hands of the tyrant Yazid. Newport was the first city in Europe to hold the commemorative march.
Mubarak Ali, one of the organisers and secretary of the Islamic Society of Wales, said: “We want to make it clear that we have got nothing to do with ISIS, we are peaceful, law-abiding people, we respect Queen and country.
“The National Front did their best to cause trouble, they tried to spark things off but it wasn’t working. Our members totally ignored it, they were chanting louder.”
Mohammad Saqlain, one of the marchers, said of the incident: “I found it very distressing. I have been here two or three times before and it’s never happened before but I’m very aware that because of the lack of knowledge they automatically think we are terrorists.”
Gwent police said there were no arrests following the incident.
