1. China: Xinjiang city bans Islamic dress on public transport
A city in China’s restive Xinjiang region has banned those in Islamic headscarves and with beards from public transport, a state paper says.
Officials in Karamay said the ban, which prohibits headscarves, partial face veils and burkas, would last until 20 August due to a local sports event.
Xinjiang, home to the Muslim Uighur minority, has seen an upsurge in violence in recent months.

5. Iraqi government air strike on Islamic State court kills 60
Aug 6 (Reuters) – An Iraqi government air strike on a Sharia court set up by Islamic State militants in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul killed 60 people on Wednesday, the office of the prime minister’s military spokesman said.
The Islamic State judge who ran the court was among those killed, the spokesman said. The Sunni militants routinely hand down sentences such as beheadings.

SYRIA – Islamic State storm one of last Syria army bases in Raqqa
Islamic State militants stormed one of the Syrian government’s last outposts in the northern province of Raqqa in an overnight attack and battled troops holed up in the area on Thursday, killing dozens of soldiers, activists said.
A monitoring group said over 40 people were killed in multiple suicide car bombings carried out by Islamic State fighters and in ensuing clashes.
The Islamic State, an al Qaeda offshoot, has made rapid gains in Syria since it seized northern Iraq’s largest city, Mosul, on June 10, and declared an Islamic caliphate on adjoining territory it controls in Syria and Iraq.

Mali jihadi leader reappears to threaten France
The leader of a jihadist group driven from northern Mali by French troops has reappeared for the first time in 18 months with a video message calling for Muslims to rise up against France, “which detests Islam”.
Iyad Ag Ghaly, who led a Tuareg rebellion in the Sahara before setting up the armed group Ansar Dine (“Defenders of the Faith”), disappeared in January 2013 soon after France intervened to stop a column of Islamist insurgents taking Mali’s capital Bamako and toppling the government.
In a 23-minute video in Arabic put online on Tuesday, he signalled a return to combat, saying his group was “ready to unite with our brothers on the ground to face up to the crusaders and infidels who have united to fight Islam in our land”.
Iyad Ag Ghaly accused the French and their Malian army allies of a litany of atrocities against the people of northern Mali that “brings shivers to the spine”.
Flanked by a black jihadist flag and a Kalachnikov rifle, his long monologue was intercut with images of French interests in Africa.
The US placed Ansar Dine on its terrorist blacklist in March 2013 alongside Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (Aqmi), with whom it has been linked.
