ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Ninety four people went on trial Monday in the United Arab Emirates on charges of trying to overthrow the government, the latest in a growing crackdown in the Gulf nation against perceived political or security threats inspired by the Arab Spring uprisings.
Amid tight security, about 200 relatives were bussed to the court in the heart of the capital Abu Dhabi for the morning hearing. The road leading the court was closed and authorities barred international media, including The Associated Press, and several rights groups from attending.
The defendants — unnamed doctors, academics, lawyers and other professionals — have been accused of building a secret network to plot the coup and raising money through real estate and other deals.
According to a government statement, the 94 are suspected of links to the Muslim Brotherhood and other unnamed parties they allegedly contacted for expertise and financial support in their plot. The detained include men and women who were arrested over the past year.

SAUDI ARABIA – King Abdullah OKs man’s crucifixion for robbery
Two leading rights groups appealed to Saudi King Abdullah to halt Tuesday’s crucifixion and firing-squad executions of seven young Saudis for armed robbery.
At least two of the defendants were child offenders when they allegedly robbed jewelry stores at gunpoint in 2005, Human Rights Watch said.
The men, ages 20 to 24, “were severely beaten, denied food and water, deprived of sleep, forced to remain standing for 24 hours and then forced to sign ‘confessions,” Amnesty International said
[…]”We were in a period of adolescence and ignorance, and we all regret what we have done,” defendant Yasser al-Otaibi told the news agency, explaining they have all since found God and now know the Koran completely.
“Please reverse the judgment for lack of lawyers to us during judgment,” Otaibi said..
Abdullah, 89, Saturday authorized the death sentences to be carried out and sent the men to the southwestern Saudi city of Abha. Abha is the capital of the rustic Asir province, where the men are from.
The alleged gang leader is to be crucified for three days, authorities said. The six others are to face firing squads.

Saudi Arabia to Teach Jihad in Schools
Students will be taught ‘correct concept of jihad’
Saudi Arabia has decided to introduce the concept of jihad at the intermediate school level in order to teach Islamic principles and duties to young students in the kingdom.
Speaking about the aggression related to jihad, the spokesperson said: “Saudi Arabia is not an aggressive country and will only get involved in conflict to defend itself.”
He said that only the ruler has the right to “raise the banner of jihad” and not individuals or Muslim groups.
