  1. Why does Egypt have a high rate of road deaths? (BBC, video, Jan 5, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-30677510

“Egypt has one of the highest rates of road deaths in the world, according to the World Health Organization. Twelve thousand people are killed in Egypt road accidents every year. Some blame the situation on careless driving, while others say the real cause is the poor condition of Egypt’s roads. Sally Nabil reports from Cairo.”

  2. Libya violence: Seized Coptic Christians ‘freed’ in Libya (BBC, Jan 5, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-30684526

“Thirteen Coptic Christian workers from Egypt have been freed after being seized in Libya, an official said.

On Saturday, eyewitnesses in the northern city of Sirte said gunmen took the Christian men in the middle of the night from a residential compound.

But a tribal leader insisted on Monday that they had been detained by people smugglers, not kidnapped.

The incident was the latest in a series of recent attacks on Egyptian Christians working in Libya.

Local residents said the masked gunmen had separated the Christians from the Muslims before handcuffing them and taking them away in cars.

Muftah Marzuq, head of the council of elders in the coastal city of Sirte, said the men were released after negotiations between the gunmen and local officials. …”

  3. Car bomb targets foreign convoy in Kabul (CNN, Jan 5, 2015)
    http://edition.cnn.com/2015/01/05/asia/kabul-attack/index.html

“A car packed with explosives detonated Monday near a convoy of foreign vehicles in Kabul, wounding at least six civilians, Afghan police said.

The convoy was a group from the European Union Police Mission in Afghanistan (EUPOL).

“We can confirm that at 1324 today a EUPOL vehicle was involved in a vehicle borne suicide attack whilst it was travelling east on the Jalalabad Road in Kabul,” a statement from the group read.

There were no EUPOL casualties, but the group was aware of civilians hurt and would work with Afghan police to investigate the attack, acting head of mission Pia Stjernvall said.”

  4. U.S. troops at Iraqi base under ‘regular’ fire (CNN, Jan 5, 2015)
    http://edition.cnn.com/2015/01/05/politics/us-troops-under-regular-fire-iraq/index.html

“The 320 U.S. troops at Al Asad air base in Iraq are now coming under “regular” mortar and rocket fire from nearby ISIS fighters, according to Pentagon spokesman Col. Steven Warren. While the attacks are “completely ineffective,” it is raising continuing concern that U.S. forces in Iraq can be kept safe and at least technically out of a combat role, a separate defense official said. The Pentagon would not say whether security measures had changed at the base.

No U.S. troops have been injured, but it’s not clear if any of the hundreds of Iraqi forces at the base have suffered casualties.

Most of the rounds are impacting near the perimeter of the sprawling base, according to the official. The troops at Al Asad are mainly Marines, and are part of the “advise and assist” effort. Since December 20, they have been helping Iraqi units there with learning how to conduct air support, mission planning and intelligence gathering….”

    • The troops are going to come under more fire as the war grows, the worst thing about this situation is that Obama has reduced the US military to the point that we are going to have a hard time finding the military assets to go to their aid when everything goes down the tube.

  5. Three Saudi guards killed in suicide, gun attack on Iraq border: ministry (reuters, Jan 5, 2015)
    http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/01/05/us-mideast-crisis-saudi-idUSKBN0KE0G420150105

“Militants killed two Saudi border guards and their commanding officer on the frontier with Iraq early on Monday, the interior ministry said, in a suicide and gun attack one analyst called Islamic State’s first assault on the kingdom.

The boundary, defended by earth barriers and fences and monitored by cameras and radar, has been attacked in the past by mortar bombs fired from a distance, but there have been no ground assaults in recent years.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the assault, which hit a remote desert area next to Iraq’s Anbar province where both the Islamic State militant group and Shi’ite Muslim militias close to Riyadh’s foe Iran operate.

The use of a suicide bomber pointed to Islamic State, said Mustafa Alani, an Iraqi security analyst with close ties to Saudi Arabia’s interior ministry…”

  6. A friend sent me this:
    “Dear Nicolai,

I would like to give you a very brief first hand from the Pegida Demonstration in Berlin – Bärgida:
I have been there till 2100. At the beginning approx 250 have been there. The leftwings gathered 1000+ people. The police didn’t want to free our way or wasn’t able to do so. Our people were 90% normal people from 30-50 in age. The rest were some football guys which were likely to have some trouble but they kept behaving. I saw one “nazi” but I’m not sure. The other leftwing movement were mostly 20-30years in age. As the Pi-news flag emerged some eggs came flying by.”

        • Yes, let’s whip this Tardish high jinks into class warfare. Forget about the perpetrators of mayhem and how these areas are “no-go zones” for kafir-cops.

Think how blessed you are, dear citizens of the IRI, living in a just and free society [“just” and “free” as defined within the Ummah].

    • Likewise in the UK, we have the somewhat curiously named ‘Unite Against Facists’, (who behave more like facists than anyone else) which are essentially the brownshirt street-thugs of the Socialist Workers Party.

And the UK Prime Minister Cameron is a founding signatory of this organisation. Interesting, no?

      • I can’t remember who it was that said that the next time the facist started to take power they would claim to be anti fascists, if memory serves me correct this was in the late 1940s and it may have been Churchill.
